Today a little bird told me that the lab specimen reported as a strain of gonorrhea resistant to ofloxacin and ceftriaxone was an error caused by the culture plate being contaminated and overgrown by another species (likely a streptococcus) that gave a false impression of the gonorrhea being resistant to those antibiotics.

This is good news. The thought of that strain, resistant to the two most common classes of drugs used to treat the clap, being spread around San Diego was frightening.

However, the rest of my post above about growing trends in antibiotic resistance among gonorrhea strains is true and concerning. Some of you more...er...experienced mongers probably remember a day when a shot of penicillin would take out the drip. Nowadays, not even a point in trying.
