An additional tidbit concerning the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. This past summer the CDC reported on several case of azithromycin resistant Chlamydia trachomatis. As an obligate intracellular parasite it cannot be cultured on artifical media. Most commonly diagnosis is made by the use of DNA probes or detection of chlamydial antigen by ELISA. A urine test is available and becoming more widely used but if the lab your provider uses doesnt offer it, you get the old swab up the urethra approach. F1
