"Brother" Ritmo, yes, let's get our facts straight. I didn't say going to LaMesa was an automatic death sentence, and it's unfair and misleading of you to suggest that I did. It's also IMO unwise to conclude that only Mexicans are at risk there just because much of the violence in TJ is drug-related and you "guess" that none of the victims were gringos. I've been stopped and harrassed by drunk Mexicans in LaMesa on almost every visit (something that's never happened in the ZN) and it wasn't pretty. They weren't trying to strike up a friendly transnational relationship and they didn't want to discuss NAFTA. They were bitter, drunk, and cruising for a fight. As the only gringo in the entire area at the time, I stood out and was the obvious target of choice for venting their hostility. Until you give me facts or personal experiences to prove otherwise, I'll continue to believe that LaMesa poses a higher risk area for gringos than the ZN, based on the stats I've read, advise from locals, conversations with the chicas in LaMesa themselves, and my own experiences. True, LaMesa isn't Beirut, but it isn't LaJolla either. As always, the truth is somewhere in between and that was the tone I was trying to get across--striking a cautionary balance of reason between two extremes. The posts here talk almost exclusively about the good times to be had there. I don't want some newby with no experience (or anyone, for that matter) reading those posts and deciding LaMesa is Pussy Valhalla when it isn't, and then going there blissfully ignorant of the risks. If that approach annoys you, if it offends your "good-times" sensibilities and persona, if it sounds extremist, then I'm sorry. You and I really have nothing further to talk about. Sorry to sound so heavy-handed. It's not you personally; I've always enjoyed your posts and your quirky sense of humor. But when we begin to downplay safety issues, it touches a nerve in me. Our mutual safety should be the primary concern we have for each other on this board, and we can't get lax about them. We've yet to lose a monger in the ZN, and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm all for everyone having a good time anywhere and anyway they want to, and then returning safely to the U.S. to post about it.
