The 605 does not hit the 5 far enough south to avoid some of the trouble spots. IMO, if you are going to the trouble to go as far as the 605, it is better to continue all the way to the 57. When taking this route, I normally don't hit the eastbound 91 until, 7:00 - 7:30, so I can't say how it is earlier. If it is bad, I would just stay on the 57 all the way to the 5. I have taken the 405 midday myself, and had smooth sailing. Other times, it was so backed up I had to take Sepulveda. It seems like every time I listen to a traffic report, they are saying stay off the 405. As a result, I avoid it whenever possible. Maybe I have just been unlucky.
