With all the suggestions for circuitous routes, I just wanted to make one suggestion. If it is earlier than 3:00 PM, and the radio traffic reports have not mentioned any slowdowns on the 5, stay on it! If traffic is light, this is without a doubt the fastest way through L.A. I usually leave at 6:00 - 6:30, and on the rare occassions that the website and radio showed no problems on the 5, I have made it from the 134 to the 91 in 30 - 40 minutes. However, if the radio says anything about "the usual slowdown at ...", all bets are off. That can mean a 5 minute delay or a 30 minute one. For some reason, the 5 tends to be really clear on rainy Friday evenings. I have no idea why.
