Actually there's been a lot of research on trust.

"A person should earn your trust, it should not be given without even knowing the person." The research shows otherwise. An excellent source is the book "The Evolution of Cooperation". The best strategy that's been uncovered so far is called "tit for tat". You start off first by trusting the other person and then simply mirror their response.
