The research shows otherwise. An excellent source is the book "The Evolution of Cooperation".
The best strategy that's been uncovered so far is called "tit for tat". You start off first by trusting the other person and then simply mirror their response. If they respond with a cooperative action, then you reply with a cooperative action. If they respond by trying to screw you, then you in turn try to screw them. "tit for tat"
