I spent some time Saturday in Bar Tropical, watching the variedades, and hanging out at the bar with the chicas. Here are my 'notes': There is a new chica dancing the variedades who looks like she's 15. Really popular with the guys, especially the gringos. The story is that she's really 19, has a kid, and has a gringo boyfriend, but she really works the crowd, looks like she is trying to make a quick killing at BT. Don't know her name, but she's popular among the chicas in the sense that they help her raise money from customers. While sitting at the bar, one of the chicas pointed out to me the novios of the various working chicas as they came in the door (and before they started talking to their novias). Some of the novios are younger than the chicas, if you can imagine that. At one point, 4 chicas walked in the door as a group, and started giving dollars to a dancing chica. It was explained to me that these were clientes not chicas. The 4 chicas walked around the bar a bit, and then took off for god knows where. During my stay at BT, I saw the usual steady stream of gringos entering the bar, sitting down at a table for five minutes, not figuring out what the deal was, and then splitting. Sometimes, one of the chicas would tell me how attractive she thought one of the gringos was, but the language barrier was preventing any further contact. Oh well.
