I too have visited this historic site, and maintain that those ON BOTH SIDES of this bloody conflict should be honored for their sacrifice.

However the term "Remember the Alamo" has too often been used in the southwest as a code word for racism and discrimination against Mexican nationals, as well as American Citizens of Mexican heritage. In reality, the Mexican-American war was staged by the US in a blatant land-grab against a weak Mexican nation. The result of that war was the disposession of thousands of Mexicans of their lands, their homes, their property, and their legal rights. Land grants and titles written in Spanish were routinely ignored by American courts and families who had lived in the southwest for generations were thrown off their land and reduced to peonage. The legacy of hatred and recrimination resulting from this terrible war has been handed down to this day. As recently as the 1960's, my father could not be served in many restaurants in Texas because he "looked too Mexican."
So my fellow whore-mongers, by all means visit this historic site, and try and obtain a real understanding of the shared history of our two nations.
