A buck is a big deal in Mexico...I had a "barker" outside of Peanuts & Beer literally kiss the dollar I gave him for "leading" me to the front door of the place. It's a sad commentary on the level of desperation out there for so many folks in TJ. He kept saying, "You don't know how much this means to me!". I wish my spending gave some of my fellow citizens here in the US so much pleasure. Nonetheless, I do believe that the cabbies conspire to figure out ways to get that extra buck...and one of them is tack it on at the end of the ride...sort of like the French do with the 15 percent surcharge automatically added to the price of a meal at a restaurant. Then they give ya shit if you don't pay it. Interestingly, this doesn't just hold for pure white guero Americanos in TJ. I've seen Spanish-speaking Mexican-Americans jacked around by cabbies as well... Don't get me wrong. Those cabbies are an interesting lot. I've heard some great stories from some of the more loquacious ones...but they do know how to sqeeze a gringo when they think they can. KRICO
