The red light except for the heavier vehicles is random chance. (trucks and vans always get searched). It is the same when you come into mexican airport customs where you press a button and it gives you green or red light. I have gotten the red light twice in maybe 30-40 times. One time I kept going because nobody seemed to notice with no problem. The other time I was motioned over to inspection. The offical just looked in my trunk which was full of various junk and some bags of new clothes for my sweetie. He just closed it right back without going through anything and just pointed for me to continue on.
