I spent last night (saturday evening) hanging out in my own neighborhood for once, because the rains make it hard to get to and around downtown from the west of the city... Although Las Playas de Tijuana has been relatively tranquil (and pretty dead on the action scene) all winter, there have been lots of folks out and about this weekend. I had friends visiting from Los Angeles, and the three of us walked down to Teatro, a contempo nightclub/bar facing the ocean. The place was packed, there were lots of young, smartly dressed Mexican folks, and great dance music pounding inside the club. My friends came wearing tennis shoes (grrr!) and were not let inside. There were a few bouncers and about three cops hanging out next to him while we were told about the dress code. I was dressed up and ready to rock - the sacrifices you make for good friends!
We walked northward a bit more to check out Boomerangs. Its a sit down kind of bar (no dancing) but it does have good music and everyone there was really having a great time. I got totally hammered on Pina Coladas and watched people on their dates dancing for each other at the tables (taking turns being sexy). After an hour the table of guys next to us introduced themselves to us and we stuck up a conversation. Turns out they were both born and raised in Zona Norte in a section they called "El Castillo". (They said this was the rich area of Zona Norte that has completely escaped my attention, anyone ever seen it?) That turned into an avid hour long discussion/argument/story swapping about Zona Norte, prostitution, women, differences between the U.S. and Mexico, etc. Their stories don't seem that different from your stories. One of them visits the chicas often and says they take care of themselves (no STDs), the other has friends who drive in from Oceanside and pays for barebacking.
This conversation would have lasted until the sun came up if my friends hadn't dragged me out of there.
Anyway, I'm totally excited because I (wrongly) assumed there was no way Mexican guys would be open to me about what they do in Zona Norte. Not only were they open, they pretty much gave me tons of info without me even asking. Being drunk probably helps.
I'm definitely going back. I had a great time.
