I went to do observations with notebook and pen, and when I would stand anywhere for a minute I would be told to keep moving :P Basically, I just felt really uncomfortable trying to watch, no places to sit down, and even when I went inside bars I wasn't allowed to stand near the doorway/entrance. I WAS going to set up a whole table with info and free condoms and go on a recruiting spree, but when I told PROCABI (an organization that does lots of outreach) that using public streets to do outreach, handout condoms or pamphlets, etc. is considered "disturbing the peace" and will get you thrown in jail. What happens is the owner or manager of a place will call the cops and have you removed from the front area of the street they are on. Not even totally legit organizations can do it w/out permission and contracts. So I guess its good that I didn't find out the hard way. No I didn't annoy street girls. They seemed curious to see me, the whole thing was a really weird experience. There was really no "spectator" space, much less intervention space. It was either customers or workers and thats it. And I think I stuck out enough that no one really knew how to place me. The same is true when sitting in a bar. Esp. when alone. I feel this overwhelming sense of ackwardness and shame at being thought of as a customer (because I'm female mostly), I'm sure its similar to what newbies feel as well. |
