This happened over 30 plus years ago so things may be quite different. Or they may not.

I was involved in an auto accident in an interior Mexican city. It was my fault. No one was injured but both cars suffered damage. I had insurance.

Go to jail and do not collect 200.

While spending a long weekend in the front part of the police station (another good reason to learn the language so you can talk fast and ease the pain) I met other people involved in accidents. One guy simply lost control of his car on a wet street and hit a curb injuring only himself.

Go to jail and do not collect 200.

The only real value of the insurance policy was that I was released (head for the border time) after several days as the insurance company guaranteed my "solvency and honor" and paid off my claim for the damages.
