Taxman, the Roiss is close to Motel 6 standards on luxury, but is clean and well located. I've stayed there twice and was satisfied. If you want to go little more upscale, you may want to look elsewhere (I have no recommendation there). Be careful renting apartments, some of them can be pretty bad so ask around. Enjoy your trip.

By Taxman on Monday, June 09, 2003 - 02:40 pm:  Edit

Thanks RobeWarrior

Anybody have any comments on the apts. rented by Bobby from BlameItOnRio or from Kenn at Gringomanagement? specifically which ones are good or bad.

What about the Arpoador? Anybody know good or bad???

By Sandman on Monday, June 09, 2003 - 04:15 pm:  Edit

Tax-You may want to consider a hotel for the first day or two. The Arpoador or Debret should serve you well. The Roiss is OK and very Garota friendly but there are many better. From there, you can look at several Apt's.

Don't expect a lot but then you don't pay a lot either and the girls are impressed no matter how bad they are. Remember where they are coming from.

I also highly recommend Don for your first visit. The other guys will take you under their wing but Don is a sure bet to stick with you and keep you out of trouble and in Garotas. The other guys might just leave you hanging somewhere you shouldn't be left hanging......does that make sense?

Look forward to meeting you at Alcazar and to hearing about your conquests after a day or two...You will never be the same!

Sweet

Thanks, I took your advice and sent an email to Don, hopefully he could set me up with an apt, and everything else.

No sense in reinventing the wheel. That's why these boards are so valuable.

See you at the Alcazar!

Tonylove, I've stayed at the Augusto Copacabana. It is guest friendly but I had to grease the reception people. Can't bring more than one person other than you into the room. It has a nice little swimming pool on the roof. I'll be back in Rio July 4th weekend.

By Bjm01998 on Monday, July 21, 2003 - 05:39 pm:  Edit

After so much hemming and hawing... I couldn't choose between Rio and Buenos Aires... I've decided on Brazil for my first trip. So a little help would be greatly appreciated. A lot of it has to do with the mundane things, like which airlines to fly and what hotel to book. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, a ballpark figure on prices would be nice. Also, I'm trying to decide on whether or not to get a guide. Is the scene so user friendly that I could get by without one or should I not be a dumb first timer and get a guide?

And the last question... I'm of japanese decent... does that matter down there?

Thanks a lot!

By DC on Monday, July 21, 2003 - 11:39 pm:  Edit

bjm01998, garotas love asians- they think we have a lot of $.In fact there is a large Japanese population down there. The mixed Japanese/Brazilian girls are stunning-you get the best of both worlds.American, United, Continental and Varig are the major carriers that go to Rio. None are direct anymore and stop in Sao Paulo first.Check all the online travel sites for prices. I've been successful finding flights from consolidators with savings of over $100. Pick up a Sunday New York Times travel section and call all the consolidators for prices. You need a passport and a Brazilian visa. You probably don't need a guide. Just look for fellow CH members at Alcazar everyday around 1PM. There's not much beach action this time of the year for "nooners" so most of them will head to 4x4 termas around 3PM.Dinner is back at any of the restaurants along Atlanico. Some will hit other termas after dinner-L'uomo, Monte Carlo or Centaurus. Then its off to Help disco B4 12midnite. I usually stay at the Savoy Othon 2 blocks behind Help on NS Copacabana. You can book them thru Orbitz for $46Us/night breakfast included.Just tag along with other CH'ers. They're a great crew who won't mind sharing their insights and experiences in our hobby. Have a good time.

By Sterling on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 - 09:12 am:  Edit

Even though a guide in not absolutely necessary, I'd highly recommend using Don for your first trip. First of all, you get introduced to the other guys immediately upon arrival. No time wasted making friends...you are instantly one of the gang. I talked to a couple of guys down there that didn't use him, and were always on the fringe of the scene.

Also, you get a cell phone with his service that is invaluable. It keeps you in touch with everyone from hotties to other mongers. Don's translation service is also a big bonus...and I'm not just talking about Portuguese. I speak decent Portuguese, but he helped me understand some of the oddities of Rio.

Lastly, I think it's just rude to crash a party and then come empty handed. If you are going to sit at Don's table, pay the man. He and the other mongers are very cool and will never bust your balls over it. But, if you just be a generous guy, an easy laugh, and pick up a check once in a while, Rio will treat you much better.

Sterling

P.S. I've done Buenos Aires & Rio. You'll have a better time in Rio...because of the other guys. BA is a great city, but Rio has a more social scene. My whole time in BA I only saw one other monger. In Rio, I always had at least four other guys to share a beer and a laugh with. It really makes a difference.

By Aldaron on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 - 05:53 am:  Edit

I agree with Sterling. Hire Don for your first trip. If nothing else, he is a good insurance policy in case you do something stupid. You are also immediately one of the gang. Just don't be a dick.....

By Bomboa on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 01:17 pm:  Edit

I'm going to offer a dissenting opinion and advise you NOT to pay a "guide." What for? Where to go, how much to pay, etc is all readily available public knowledge.

I guess if you want to pay for "male companionship", then it's up to you. But Rio is a big place, and if you get away from the touristy areas, you'll easily make friends with locals or ex-pats. If I happen to be there, I'm more than happy to hook you up with a friend of mine from Niteroi who has *lots* of cute, English-speaking friends. A change of pace from the monger scene, in case you get bored.

MitchC. Hey man. I just booked a plane to Rio and noticed you were going to be there the same weekend. Dude, you owe me one. Come to think of it, not only did I oblidge to share, but when it came to you sharing part of your harem, you were selfish if I recall correctly at 65. So, this time you have to give up at least two beauties.

By Mitchc on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 01:41 pm:  Edit

You have a deal. The one chick still works at 65 as of my trip two months ago. I can't remember her name though. I'll see you at 4x4.

By Brazil_Specialist on Saturday, August 09, 2003 - 01:09 pm:  Edit

I am always around in Rio. One block from Hotel Debret, from Alcazar.

Lot of you guys never stopped by to say hi. I still have not met most of the legendary report posters.

I have DSL internet and a US phone line. You can stop by, surf the web or make phone calls to US for free or a small donation.

(start spam) You can rent a cellphone or Vesper portable landline (cheaper calls), or rent a room in my apartment. (end spam)

or just come by to gossip or get some girls together. If you know some fresh innocent 18-19 year olds, make sure you write down their phone numbers for me! I always give recommendations, but rarely people help me out with recommendations.

I almost never do termas and Help, I get girls through private introductions, low key madams, internet agencies like www.karlamodels.com.br etc. I always have a few semi-pro girls stopping by who would love to meet some gringos.

Email me at 1234567@innocent.com for my phone numbers in Rio. You can even call me via a phone number in the US.
