Mangaman,
An hour and half for what? I never check bags so I'm usually through fast, but the longest it's taken from doors open on the jet to me getting into a taxi has been about 25 minutes. Can you detail the hour and half, please? I have my favorita picking me up at the airport on Thursday and I told her to get there about 15 minutes after my plane arrives - which, factoring in the standard carioca 30-minute late period, gives me about 45 minutes or so, assuming the plane lands on time and not early, which it always has.
Thanks

Please factor in where one sits, front, middle, or rear!

I usually do the bulkhead in business, so about row 5 or so.

I will be in Rio, for the first time, March 16 - 28. This is my first vacation since my wife passed away months ago. It is now my time to have some fun.
Going alone, being my first time and not speaking the language will make it an adventure! It would be nice to hook up with other like-minded people to grab a bite, share advice and have some fun.
Maybe we can arrange to hook up in Rio or even speak on the phone before-hand.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Coffee,
I get in 4/2, hope to meet up. Maybe Alcazar?

Sounds good Down, I check in there most days around noon.

I will be arriving in Rio on my first solo trip from 3/29 to 4/3/04. I would love to meet someone who speaks English for drinks and to show me the ropes on my first trip. Anybody else gonna be there the same time?
By Downandup on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 04:33 am: Edit |
Coffee, we get in before 10 so will be around Alcazar at noon for lunch, then we are heading to 4X4.
By Catocony on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 08:15 am: Edit |
New guys,
Remember to eat either before or after you go to Alcazar. The food there really, really sucks. At this point, it's just a gathering area and a place to have some drinks before heading out for afternoon and evening activities.
By Downandup on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 10:56 pm: Edit |
Thanks, this only my 4th trip to Rio and I'd forgotten that.
By Pervnpat on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 11:41 pm: Edit |
Actually, their Spanish Omlette and coffee is pretty good the morning after... Just make sure to tell them to cook the eggs 'muito long tiempo' (?) ie. for a really f$ckin longtime.

The filet mignon sandwich is the safest thing in my opinion. I was picking over a terrible omelette one morning when Bluestraveler ordered one that looked decent. Since then, it's been my standard "morning protien replacement".

About the only thing I'll eat at Alcazar is the prato das frutas (fruit plate). It's not on the menu, but you get a ton of fruit and, best of all, it involves no preparation by the Alcazar kitchen.

food at terraco atlantica in front of help is great and it is empty during the day . great view and only block from alcazar
By Cortogringo on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 08:19 am: Edit |
For breakfast, I usually grab a steak sandwich and a watermelon sucos from Kice Sucos. The tuna salad is not bad either. I do drink the beer at Alcazar.

Mesquite -- I think Terraco is empty for a reason...even when the other restaurants are full.
Don and I and a group went last night to a small restaurant called "Rota 66" (Route 66) in Botafogo, about a 7 minute 9 Reals taxi ride from Copa. They had excellent bean and meat burritos (your choice of steak or chicken), really good steak fajitas and a creditable (if a little bland) guacamole. The address is Rua Voluntarios do Patria 448, Loja 8A. Phone is 2286-8487. Better than the Guapa Loco that's across the street from Solarium.

I still remember my first meal at Alcazar. It was the Americana Sandwiche with a side of mold on the bread. It brings a tear to my eye just reminiscing.
By FLhobbyer on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 04:17 pm: Edit |
Life is too short to waste a meal at Alcazar. TA at least offers a view (at night).
I think the Kice Suco chix filet (filet de frango - grilled) is very good and healthy. I love it with the spinach topping (espinafre).... with juice or I prefer açai.
By Solid808 on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 06:16 pm: Edit |
The last steak and hearts of palm entree at Alcazar did not agree with me and I never went back...
I'd like to give Kice Suco a try. Where is Kice Suco located?
By Coffee_maker on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 09:46 pm: Edit |
For 6 reais Alcazar's banana split is quite good. A garota I was with ordered it several times. It really was consistently good.
Down -- I'll be there around noon 4/2.
SF_Hombre I'll be in Rio this friday 3/26. I'll get with ya when I'm settled in. I'm in the same exact apartment I was at last November.

Sorry, guys, but I can't remember anybody's nicknames from when I was down earlier this year. (Except Bwana, Sterling, RobeWarrior, and SweetMesquite). This is my first post since joining CH.
I'm Eviltwin because I'm S.P. Dave's Evil Twin - hope some of you remember me.
Anyway, I'm due in to Rio tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 30), and I'd love to hook up with anyone there. I'll be there 'til April 20.

What's Up everyone I've been to Rio once and I've just returned from my second trip this past March I was there for 9 days. Each time there I met two sweet girl friends and I just want to know how do you keep from falling for these girls when they treat you so good. MAN! This last girl was great she spoke little english, sex was outstanding and we talked alot laying in bed between her fucking my brains out. I know by now someone else is getting it and I try to remember that but each time it gets harder. So help me out how do you guys handle it.
By Sf4dfish on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 04:45 pm: Edit |
Tonyrio, we go back ASAP:-)

Bwana, I look forward to seeing you again. Catocomy and Tman777, not sure we´ve met before, if not I look forward to meeting more merry men of mongering :^)
By Johnshaft on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 04:18 pm: Edit |
I understand your dilemma, tonyrio. The best thing I can suggest is to just accept it, stay solid friends with the girl, (because you'll have a great friend for life), and on your next trip, try to find a regular non-pro to fall for. Those are the faithful type.
By Tonyrio on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 08:47 am: Edit |
Thanks Johnshaft I will take your advise. I'm going back to Rio in September for round three hope to meet you there one day.

Bwana and Evil, I think we've missed each other on past trips but I'll look for you at Alcazar in the afternoon. Already savoring a festa at VIPs, don't you think...? Get in before you on the 15th and leave the evening of the 20th.

Hello all!
1st trip to Rio and will be there from April 17-23. Would love to meet some Hombres and swap stories. Looks like Alcazar is the meeting point. This is the cafe next to help correct? I will be the goofy gringo wearing a white g'town hat (if I can remember).
Tman77 I think we might be on the same flight.

Not next to Help, but just a block away. It's across from the Debret Hotel. See you there.

I will be in Rio from 4/21-26. Anyone in town for those dates? I will have a frind from Goianas there for some of the time but will be free for several nights. Any recommendations on 4/5 star hotels in or not too far from Copacabana?
By Sf4dfish on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 04:19 pm: Edit |
Cavs, I like the JW Marriott in Copa, but are you willing to shell out around 300 USD a nite?
By Theduke898 on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 12:22 pm: Edit |
Hi Everyone, I am headed back to Rio in May. I arrive on the 8th and leave on the 19th. This is my 6th trip in a year to Rio and am learning Portuguese. I also finally got my CPF (Like a SS# which you need to buy a cellular, get utilities in your name, etc.). If anyone is going at that time and want to meet somewhere let me know. I have many friends there now (including several Europeans and Americans) who can help show you the ropes.
By Theduke898 on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 12:33 pm: Edit |
I forgot to mention in the last posting that I have found some VERY nice efficiency apartments for $20 (US) to $30 (US) a night on the beach near everything in Copacabana. They have ceramic tiled floors, very clean and there is no charge to have a friend stay over night. It is less than a 5 minute walk from Help. I have rented clean flats for $260 per month and one effiecency apartment for $20 per night. It was very nice but a good 15 minute walk from Help or 5 minutes by taxi. They used to allow visitors at night (for a small fee) but the rules recently changed due to new ownership. Now most of the customers are European 20-30 year olds (lots of women). I had a friend stay but she arrived during the day. Anyway there are a lot of hidden deals if you know some of the locals. They helped me find places I could never have found on my own. Anyway Rio Rocks...especially during Carnival (except for the rain this year)...

We should start taking bets on whether or not Sweet actually leaves on April 26th. My money is on "not a chance in hell"!
Anyways, I arrive on the 16th and depart on the 27th.
