For what it's worth, I stayed at the Rio Roiss a few times ago, in between apartment stays, and it's a pretty nice place, VERY well located, and very pleasant. You'll have to make it clear that you are going to have guests, however, or they'll ding you every time you have a guest. I hear that if you book a double room, there's no questions asked, but better to be sure. also, it's VERY affordable. can also personally vouch for ARPOADOR INN, if you like beachfront hotels, but don't want to piss away money, this is a cool place - only thing is, be SURE to ask for a room in the BACK, on a high floor ("com a vista da mar, alto andar") or you may get a noisy room on the street in front of the hotel. AI is also closer to Ipanema than the Rio Roiss, and that could be cool if you prefer that end of the city. GREAT VIEWS of the ARPOADOR BEACH, and its denizens :-)

If in Sampa for a weekend (Fri-Monday AM), what "must-see" experiences would you recommend for a newbie?

I've been reading a lot about Bomboa and Cafe Photo, among others, but there seems to be quite a lot to do, and I'd prefer to spend quality time DOING something instead of running around trying to find "the bomb" experience.

Everyone has/gets cellphones. If you've hooked up with Uncle Don & Aunt Rhonda at Camp RioTrips, they include a phone & airport transfers in their charge. If this is your first trip, Don is probably a better person to know in Rio than the American Consulate. There's no better person to know if you should <<all:>> run into a jam.

At the very least, turn on the PM (Personal Messaging) features on your account so you may discreetly communicate with the other mongers for advice, assistance, traveling companions or just plain ol' friendship.

I suggest going to Alcazar - a couple of blocks from Help in the late-morning to early afternoon (11:00 AM - 14:45PM (when the Centro boys go dip it at 4x4 or 65). Look for a guy smoking cigars with a bunch of American joking at the table qwith him and it is ...DON! He can totally hook you up.

I'd like to hook up in Rio. Absent your having a cellphone and Hombre PM, maybe Don could set it up. When you get in, I will have been there for say, 6 weeks. Don'll know where I am.

This is also my virgin trip.... While I have felt 100% comfortable in all of my other monger trips - such as the FKK's (Germany), Costa Rica, and Mexico - I am a little abrehensive about the Rio one. From everything that I have read and heard, this a place to be extra careful to avoid problems.

I think being with other people going to clubs, such as 'Help' adds some safety...especially when taking Taxi's and such. This way we can watch each other's back's.

Its good to hang out with other mongers for fun and safety, but I wouldnt worry too much you should be fine. Try hiring the guide Don that lotech talked about he is the only one that I know of down there ,if you're worried, the little money he charges is worth your piece of mind IMHO. If you spend the whole trip afraid it would be hard to have fun

Larry David - The worry came from a recent Brazilian girl I spent time with in Miami (I live in South Florida). When I told her I was going to Rio, she strongly told me to be careful. She also said the line between the 'good guys', i.e cops, and 'bad guys' are often blurred.

The word 'concerned', however, does not mean scared. I have been to several South American countries, including Peru and Columbia, and know to be careful.

I think the main thing is to never to be trusting or close your eyes to the possibility of problems.

you can also stay at brazil specialists place ,youll have a quasi roomate who can speak the language and his place is super-secure plus there are always girls dropping by who arent gonna steal and bite the hand that feeds them
