I live close to the Mexican border, but I don't venture into it. With the kidnappings, murders and beheadings, can someone tell me how some border ho is worth the risk. They are still looking for five guys from my town that came up missing there months ago and they were mexican americans. I don't think they would think twice about dispatching a gringo.

Treker, if you live near the border with TJ and the rest of Baja you have as Governorb indicates, victimized yourself by not paying close enough attention to the news reports or possibly paying too close attention to inaccurate, hysterical news outlets that aren't providing the story in the correct context.

Bottom line is in TJ, not one single pure monger in all these years of the "drug war" has been as you say, "dispatched". Gringos who have been killed have as a rule been involved in the drug trade or other criminality south of the border. The killings have been surgical, not random. I do know one monger who was kidnapped and escaped safely. But that individual was a hardcore PLM who had advertised having great personal wealth over many years. If you do that, you will be asking to be kidnapped. Otherwise, the kidnappings have been as surgical as the murders. The bad guys know who they're taking, how much they have for ransom, and they know who to call to make the demand.

If on the other hand you live along the border in Texas near Ciudad Juarez, Estados Chihuahua or Tamaulipas, then you may have more cause for fear since the violence in those locations has been random in many instances. Distinct parts of Mexico have their own distinct danger levels.

Since the next pure monger or tourist in TJ who gets killed will be the first, I'll take my chances it won't be me. In the meantime, self-victimizing dudes who live in fear because they aren't getting to the real facts are giving the rest of us a sort of golden age in Baja. It's a buyers' market and more hot chicas per hombre are vying for the dollar and service is better too than in the past when the gringo dollar was taken for granted. If TJ would be your destination, the only thing you have to fear is fear itself.

Of course the news never tells you the murders were 15 to 20 miles away from the border. They don't tell you it was not random....the kidnappings are not random either....business owners that can pay big ransoms....I've been here 10 years now and still walk around with confidence.

Thanks and it's true I didn't say anything about kidnappings in Tamaulipas. Maybe though I could have made the point a bit clearer since the kidnapping topic was interlaced in the post.

My point was limited to the fact that unlike Baja California, there have been reports of violence delivered randomly in some instances in Victoria and other Tamaulipas locations. The drug war and cartel presence in that state had been on the rise over the last few years whereas it has been contracting in TJ. The drug war continues very much in evidence in Baja de Norte, but there is a perception that it is under control to the point of just bad guys killing each other so no sense of visitors or the population at large feeling threatened or terrorized.

TJ really feels pacified these compared to not too long ago when there were regular displays of military and heavily armed and armored law enforcement presence on the downtown streets. There is real optimism about the city's capacity to start drawing tourists again. In fact tourists and regular citizens were in no particular jeopardy during the worst of times, but the streets looking like a war zone didn't exactly promote the perception of a city where visitors could feel safe.

There's been violence reported in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Boston as well, so I fail to see you're point.

Bottom line is that U.S. citizens are RARELY targets of anything in Tamaulipas. Having said that, I realize that there have been a couple of highly publicized incidents that have happened along the border. Those do not reflect life on the ground as I know it. Mexicans, particularly well-off Mexicans, are MUCH more likely to be targeted for kidnapping, crimes, etc. than Americans.

From all we hear, it's virtually the same as it's always been. The players just aren't killing each other in the open as much. My personal view of U.S. news agencies is that they sensationalize in order to sell product and are, therefore, not very reliable when reporting "news" in Mexico.

I live close to Nuevo Laredo. True it is a buyers market. But I don't know about TJ but not to many Americans are venturing into NL.

El apodo, you are being awfully argumentative when we are in about 99% agreement. I doubt anybody has posted more than I across the internet sites that the Mexico drug violence is often reported out of context and other times incorrectly perceived - that dudes who want to go to Mexico should lay down their fears and go. I have used your analogy to U.S. cities a hundred times and stand by the comment I've frequently made for many years that I feel safer in TJ than I do in my home, Los Angeles. That was the whole point of my post in this thread in response to Treker's "fear post".

I appropriately added the caveat that the drug violence is not of monolithic character and each region carries its own distinct level and character of risk. I'm not submitting any CH posts for doctoral credit and so I don't need to "document" my comments any more than you need to document your understanding that random incidents in your home state are rare. I don't know if you're correct but I tend to believe you since you've always been a credible poster. Likewise if I post something about TJ of this nature you can bet that it is the product of closely following the news from credible sources and putting other news under the microscope. I'm not one to blow steam out of my ass and press "send". I also tend to write more carefully than many care to read. I stated that plenty of drug violence remains in TJ and Baja, but the combination of reduced visibility of heavily armed authority combined with the realization catching up to people that they won't be targeted if they aren't one of the bad guys has had a calming effect on the local population, and now even some tourists who are beginning to come back down. If you doubt my comments feel free to do the research.

Don't get your panties in a wad, I was just wondering if you had some sources other than your personal experience. As I said, hard news is difficult to come by here. Hell, when some of the best reporting is done by the blogdelnarco, you know shit is messed up.

BTW, Tamaulipas is not my home state. I've just lived here for over 5 years. I'm certainly not an apologist for it or anything else that goes on in Mexico.
