I've been going to azteca for four years. I probably will not go back. Since Connie and Marta left, I have been trying to establish a client relationship with a new therapist. It seems like a change has taken place. The therapists are very cold and mechanical. (A far cry from the past.) Anyone else had this experience. I've tried in both am and pm.

I was at Azteca today at about 3 oclock and there was no water. I decided to pass on the massage. I think the whole city is having a water problem. I was at the Salon Stress earlier in the day and they had no water. I was also at a taco shop on 1st st and after using the bathroom noticed they had no water. Thinking about it now I probably should have passed on the tacos as the employees cant wash there hands.

It is a citywide problem and they are having rolling "water blackouts" similar to the power situation in California. I forgot what the problem is (this has been going on for a couple of months)...something in the water system's infrastructure which may not even be repaired for a couple of more months. I don't think any business has its water turned off more than one day at a time. What I don't understand is why the water is always on in the zona.

I have had the alcohol wipe done twice. Actually it is kind of nice once in awhile. I would prefer a hot shower, but the alcohol wipe is better than nothing.

A warning to all. There is pipe repair in process in the area of the ZN right now (123/Martinez). It should not have an effect on central but might. Be sure to ask management where you visit. The water has been off in the morning into the early evening for the last two-day. The pressure was up today leading me to believe they may be done with the repair but you may still want to ask for the next 3 day.

Most of the bars/hotels have water tanks so you should be ok in most of the hotels in ZN.

Well, that's just my openoin, but I've been going there for years. I made visits trips there on my last trip. Visit one I brought a friend with me who had never been there before. He told me if he gets done first he'll wait for me downstairs with a beer. My masseuse turned out to be Lola. I haven't liked her massage in the past, but it seems like she's got more of a knowlage of where to massage with all her strength, and where to ease up a bit. Her massage was so good I was feeling pretty good about the place(Azteca) again. I get to the lobby and my friend that I came with isn't out there, even thouth he went in about 5min before me. I ask the receptionist if my friend is still in there, she says he is, so I have a seat. After another 10min I start to think maybe she got my friend confused with someone else, so I politely asked again. The receptionist politely said she was sure he was still in there. Then some fat chic (one of the masseuses who I don't know) behind her said "El buey no te entiende"(More or less "The idiot doesn't understand you") . Mind you, I'm speaking very clear Spanish to the receptionist the whole time I'm there. maybe this girl just wasn't paying attention and figured that this gringo wouldn't understand, but I could have FUCKING pissed on her at that moment.

Well right then my friend comes out. After he paid we are walking out and he repeatedly thanks me for showing this place. I ask who his masseuse was, and he says "Martha". Then I understand why he is thinking me so much.


Visit two was solo. A few days had passed and I just figure I'll give them another chance to impress me with that great service that has made me recomend them to dozens of people I've met in TJ. Something that I've read about but have never experienced happens, NO WATER. I'm a bit reluctant about that Alcohol rub, but the receptionist tells me the girl will clean me off, and the Alcohol does a very good job. Well i get there and get a very nice massage from Amanda. But after the massage is over she says "No Agua" and quickly walks out. So I just lay there waiting for my Alcohol rubdown. After about 20min I start to think "I don't think she's coming back". So I get dressed(all full of oil) and go out to the lobby. I told the receptionist "didn't you say they would wipe me down with Alcohol. She was suprised and said "She didn't wipe you down". Then she turns to Amanda and just snaps(yells) at her "You have to wipe them down when there is no water". There I was(vrery greasy) staring at Amanda, and the receptionist, thinking how dissatisfied I was with the experience. Amanda staring at me, and the receptionist, with a angry look, and the receptionist just looking mad. I ask the receptionist if there is a discount for the bad service. She laughs as if I was making a joke(but I wasn't), and says no. I give her a C note, she goes back to the safe to make change. Wher she does Amanda looks at another girl and says "Ya no estoy contento trabajondo aqui" (I'm no longer happy working here). I get my $80 change and just walk out, stiffing my massuse on the tip for the first time ever at Azteca. This was just a horrible experience all around.


I consider this my farwell experience with Azteca. I'm going to concentrate on finding a suitable replacment on my future trips.

Definitely some bad vibes floating around Azteca - maybe as a direct result of the big success they are having (which I don't doubt springs partially from this board...one of the masseuses told me recently that 70-80% of the clientele are gringo these days).

I would really love to understand more Spanish so I could be a fly on the wall and listen in on the conversations in the reception area. Sometimes you can sense the derision...not too long ago the vibe seemed different.

Bottom line is I think these girls are overworked...the massage work is difficult in itself, but they are also cleaning rooms, the bathrooms and showers, helping out with the laundry (they don't do ALL the cleaning and laundering, but they do a good amount of it). They get paid a couple of bucks per massage plus the tips which can give them a decent income. Still the place is really popular now and the pace is pretty furious for what amounts to difficult manual labor and a good amount of just plain dirty work.

Another problem is that they are hiring more girls and most of them seem to come in with no massage training or experience...they are trained "in-house". So the first 40 or so customers are basically guinea pigs.

Amanda is burned out and she should be. She's been there too long. My last visit (which is now 2 months ago), she tossed Marta a ball of shit for allowing me to leave my clothes in the massage room when I went off to shower -- a practice I've engaged in each of my 75 or so visits to Azteca without any objection. To Marta's credit (and this was her 2nd day back from her maternity leave), she tossed the crap right back to Amanda and permitted me the use of the room for another 7 minutes while I showered and dressed. Of course Amanda understands the alcohol rub routine which has been going on for the entire duration of these water interruptions in downtown TJ.

When the masseuses get charred to this extent, it's time to find another career. However, I do think the owner of this place is getting rich...he can afford to hire another couple of people for a cleaning crew and take that burden off the massueses.

I went to Azteca about 8:30 Sat night. Usually I call ahead to find out the wait but didn't bother this time. I was dissapointed that the cute evening receptionist that was working on previous occasions was no longer there.

There was only one other customer when I arrived. a gringo. After about a 10 minute wait I was shown to a room. Then after what seemed another 10 minutes the masseuse came in. She didn't volunteer her name but when I asked she said Perla. Said she's been working 4 months. Born and raised in Tijuana. She gave a good massage although perhaps a few minutes short of what it should be. She was pleasant but reserved. It was hard to talk to her because of the booming and I do mean booming music from the downstairs disco. I may request her on a future visit and see if she warms up to me. I give her points for acknowledging the tip I gave her-40 pesos.
