When exhanging American dollars for Thai bhat, where do you perform these transactions ? Are there cambios like in Rio, or are the best deals at the hotels (Presidente) like in CR ?

Use an ATM and get the commercial rate, Change $ into 5,000 baht at any bank ATM and then get some split into 100s.
When you arrive at BKK there are some ATMs in the exit area as well as a $ to baht machine in the luggage pick up area (takes $20s). I usually change a $20 and use this for tips and taxi.

i've changed my US $$ at the airports in BKK and Phuket. in bkk, finding an atm is not problem but i don't recall seeing too many in Phuket. found the exchange rate at the airport in Phuket was better than the rate offered at the booths in Patong Beach. most hotels that i've used for exchange don't typically have enough money - can only do $100 a day or so for each guest.

On recent trip I had taken $600 in cash, plus one credit card and an ATM card but no traveller's checks. I used the cash first and then I was relying on the use of my ATM card. ATM machines are plentiful in BKK, but that wasn't the problem until I tried to use it on my departure day when it wouldn't work. I had only enough money to pay the 500B airport departure fee, a bus ride to the airport @ 100B and another 150B for food. When I got back to LAX, the ATM card worked fine. I had already notified my bank of the dates I'd be abroad but I think possibly because of the international date line difference they may have cut me off one day early. Also, the 1-800 number the bank gave me was a problem, the AT&T operator would not call that number collect as the bank had told me I could should I have any problems. Thus, I'd suggest telling your bank you'll be in your Asian destination one extra day so this won't happen to you too.

There are exchange booths everywhere in the major cities. You can also use banks. ATM's are definitely your best bet though.

I am going to be in Transit for 8 hours and would like to check into a Airport Hotel.
Any recommendations for staying close to BKK airport? I have heard of the AIRPORT AMARI hotel, but am not sure how "friendly" they are.

A girl friendly, decent hotel in the $30 to $45 price range would be perfect.

Amari Boulavard has a guest fee and there is a certain amount of hassle but they let you take a girl in. Amari Airport is the same management.

No, but I checked with a friend of mine who lives in BKK. If you want a less expensive hotel let me knoe asap. You can order a massage girl for a massage only, so let the concierge know exactly what you want. If you have 3 hours or more you can taxi down to one of the bar/club areas and pick up your own.

Garce hotel: On Nana street/road/boulavard. Just step out of Nana Entertainment Plaza, cross Sukhumvit, and keep walking about 2 or three blocks. It's on the right hand side of the street. The coffee shop is downstairs. You can't miss it. When you begin to see a lot of middle eastern and black guys, you know you're getting close. I was in there for the first time about a month ago. It was about 2am and I didn't like the ratio. It was a sausage fest - 3 guys for every 2 girls (and not that good looking either). In terms of discos, Nana's is a bit more pleasing to the eye with their selection of Issan's finest ladies.

I was there(Grace Hotel)a few times but saw nothing but ugly or over the hill working girls. But if your standards are not too high...or if it's past 230am... I personally never picked up anyone there.

More than a yea ago I had an unpleasant experience when I was poisoned at my hotel room in Bangkok. This is something that you hear about but never believe is happening.
In the early evening on the street outside the Nana Plaza my eyes was attracted by a Thai woman of about 30 – 35 years. She was good looking and was wearing a lot of gold jewellery. Most Thai hotels have security desks at the elevators and insist on ID before the girl goes to your room. Even Nana Hotel- the Mecca of mongering checks IDs for the past 2 years !!

3- Thais will traditionally marry at 13- What century are you living in. The age of consent in Thailand is now 18. You might be able to marry a 13 yo in the jungle countryside, but try it in Bangkok !! There have been multiple stings in BKK and Pattaya to catch perverts looking to have sex with underage girls. It is a prevalent problem in Thailand that the police are VERY actively pursuing. If you have never heard of it in dozens of visits - you are touring the caves with Osama. You have not been in any urban area.

4- Ask Zielxx if he got an amoeba from the water- totally ludicrous ! An amoeba gives you dysentery it does not make you comatose for 2-3 hours. I personally know of at least 3 other cases of " date rape " type drugs used by freelancers to rob customers. I have a question that relates to the Thai police and farangs. I understand that the Thai police favor Thais over farangs and that this is a strong bias that we should be aware of. Does this bias apply to the tourist police as well? I have never had experiences with either regular or tourist police in Thailand, but had been under the impression (based on very little real information) that the tourist police, at least, were relatively even-handed. Of course, even if this is true (and I am asking those in the know whether it is or not) it doesn't get us very far except in certain non-mongering transactions, but it would be helpful to know whether there is any point in going to the tourist police if we have problems with a merchant, hotel, or whatever.

I have seen the regular Thai police in action many times , but have little experience with the tourist police. I think they are more or less a joke in Thailand with very little real authority. They may help you some in a dispute about bill padding in a bar, but this is basically just PR stuff. Few farangs actually complain so the bar owners are more than willing to agree to " refund " what they just basically stole anyway. If your not cheating-- your not trying ! If a Thai national accuses you of some criminal act or you get into some type of altercation with a Thai- they might as well be the Keystone Cops . All they are going to do is call the "real " cops. The only other benefit of the TP is they speak slightly better English than the regular cops.

if you have a problem with the freelancers the is only one thing you can do: kick them out of your room asap and leave the hotel. never call the cops or even the hotel security. the freelancers the cops and the hotel security is one big clan of mafia. never open a bottle and leave it in the room when you take a shower always take a shower together and watch them very carefully!!!

I am currently in Bangkok. Two nights ago I tried Nana Plaza, and last night I scouted Asoke and Soi Cowboy.
