The philippines are part of southeast asia, which by the way makes "flips" asian. That is not "slang" nor "proximity", "asian" refers to an ethnicty derived from their geographical origination... and the flips are in it. Conversely, so aren't Indians, Pakistanis, MALAYSIA, etc. I take it you are not ASIAN and fill out US census forms.

Now, to Blazers point, most of us/USA/non-asians, consider "asians" to be from east asia, albeit not to be taken literally. It's semantics...

The term Pacific Islanders was recently developed mainly here in the USA to show the distinction between Guam, Philippines, Samoa and the rest of REAL Asia. Technically speaking, the Philippines is part of Asia from their Malay history BUT for anyone that has been to the Phils, it looks absolutely NOTHING like the rest of Asia. It looks like an Islander version of Mexico.

The country is much more influenced by Spain and the USA than any part of Asia. Their cuisine is primarily peasant Spanish with some Chinese influence. They are the only Catholic country in Asia. They are the only country conquered by Spain and the only country that was once a colony of the USA. To me, the Filipinos have been labeled Pacific Islanders because their culture is more alligned with Guam, Samoa, etc than any part of Asia. It's semantics but I don't consider Filipinos Asian for those reasons and certainly dont consider them Flips. Like said before, traveling around Asia and you arrive in the PHils and you really feel like you left Asia.

There are many examples of foreign influence in most every Asian country and you would be hard pressed to generalize an accurate "asian culture" You fall under my label of perception and alignment of asian to mean east asian. Not accurate whatsoever, but your not alone.

DM, I was not actually referring to just the Far East when referring to Asians as Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are very Asian countries in all respects, especially the religious and other cultural issues like food and architecture. The artistic influence of the Philippines as it relates to Asia is nil in all aspects. It is a CULTURAL WASTELAND.

As far as geographics are concerned...it has always been labeled as part of Asia but on the map it is on the farthest spot of Asia and just at the outer fringes of what is considered Asia. I would say the Phils is in the neutral zone on the map..stuck between the Pacific Islands and Asia and definately unique.

Also, as I mentioned the term "asia" as a generalization is relevant only in a geopolitical context. There are plenty of asians in west asia that are much further off than your perception of what constitutes an asian than the Phils. Societies and "culture" is often shaped within the context of political boundaries both old and current. Like I said, there is a difference between perception and reality. Because a country has foreign influx and influences, doesn't negate it's origin. The USA is perfect example of that as is most every country in the world.

Don Marco makes an interesting point. When did SE Asians become almost exclusively known as "Asian". They used to be called "Orientals", but someone deemed that political incorrect even though for centuries the area was referred to as the Orient. Russians are Asians. So are Persians. Even Indians, but you wouldn't think of them as such under today's accepted defintion. It's semantic nonsense. It reminds me of when people cringe when they hear the phrase "colored people", but "people of color" is perfectly acceptable.

When I lived in Korea I was a roundeye yankee and the term oriental was usually used when a Koreans spoke of themselves - at least to me. He then insisted that Asian should only refer to Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, etc. "Oh, just oriental people then?".

I do find it funny when Indians refer to themselves as "Asian Indians". That's fairly stupid, although I guess in the US it might be better than the more recent "Indian with a feather or with a dot?" Still, it's like saying "Asian Chinese" or "African Ethiopian" or something.
