This place is located right across the street from the Presidente.
When I bolted from the Gran Hotel, The Balmoral was willing to take me in. The woman quoted me $60 per night for a single. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I asked, "What happened to $35?" She said, Oh $33 then, but bring the ad from the Tico Times (sometimes it pays to bluff!).
She sent me & the bellhop upstairs to check out a room. It was small, but the bed was comfortable, the closets were big enough and the Air Conditioner worked. Good enough for me.
When I checked in the next day, they had no small rooms available, so they gave me a much larger, nicer room at the same price. Recommended if the Presidente is not available.
Safe Deposit: Downstairs and FREE.
Guest Charge: $17 (but $33 + $17=$50, so, so what).
No jacuzzi.
Free internet and copies in the business center.
NOTE: There is a secret (at least to me) restaurant & bar on the 7th floor. The elevator only goes to the sixth -- you have to walk up. I **think** people who pay full price get free breakfast there.
Most of the help speaks passable English.

I still have my Tico Times form a year ago. Wonder if they will honor that coupon when I hit town on May 10
It was too late by the time I found the coupon, so I stayed in another place for $30 that pretty much sucked, but when I turned on the "broken" window ac it worked just fine.

Stayed there over Labor day for 2 days at end of trip, For $65 got a room about 2' wider than the bed. It was tiny and with the $17 guest fee no deal at all but the last 2 days were not originally planned for SJ but I thought Jaco sucked and returned to SJ with no room and took what I could get.
