Several people have written to me lately looking for hotel recommendations in the San Jose area. The following link is one of the best web directories I've found:

Keep in mind that in Costa Rica everything is negotiable, so don't hesitate to ask for a discount. Unless you're here during a very busy period, most hotels will give you a 15% to 20% discount from their advertised rates, even more if you stay longer than a week or book multiple rooms.

Ask specifically about their guest policies, or you may be disappointed after you get here. Most hotels don't charge guest fees but some do. Others don't permit unregistered guests at all. Still others permit guests without a fee if you register for a double room, but charge a fee if you are paying for a single. All major hotels require that guests sign-in at the desk. This is for security purposes, so don't try to sneak girls into your room. There's no reason to do so. The sign-in is completely routine and isn't a hassle.

Frequently, you can get better rates by walking into the desk and telling them you're staying elsewhere but want to move. They love to steal each other's customers. If you're planning to stay more than a week, the best strategy may be to make an advance reservation but not prepay more than the first night. After you arrive, you can shop around and if you find a place you like better, you can move.
