Hotel Debret

By Youngtom on Friday, June 28, 2002 - 06:49 am:  Edit

Here's the link. http://www.debret.com

Along with the Rio Rioss, this is one of the more popular moderately priced hotels. 1 block from Help, great view of the ocean, restaraunt on the top floor, bar.

This currently is my favorite place to stay.

By Hombrecito1 on Thursday, August 01, 2002 - 10:45 am:  Edit

Does anybody that has stayed at the Debret know the difference between the Oceanfront Luxo room and Oceanfront Suite-both for 2 people? How much bigger is the suite and what extra amenities does it have-Is it worth the extra money?

I was also wondering if anybody has stayed in a suite with a balcony overlooking the ocean, and if so whether they liked it.

I emailed the Debret asking them this and they sent me an email telling me to fill out a reservation form to make my reservation. Maybe they didn't understand the English well.

Thanks,

I own 3 Studio Ocean View apartments on Rua Djalma Ulrich around the corner from HELP Disco and the Meia Pataka. $45.00 US a night. E-mail me for info. schneid229@yahoo.com

I've only stayed in Luxo rooms at the Debret but I think that the only difference between Luxo & Suites are the suites have a separate sitting room with a couch/dining table with some chairs whereas the Luxo's have couple of armchairs in the bedroom but no separate sitting room. If you look at the apartmento link at the photos at www.debret.com, I think that you can probably see the difference.

Looks like with current exchanges rates the price difference between Luxo/Suite is $8-10 per day. I guess if I'd known that I'd have gone for the suite.

The interiors look A LOT better than the exterior shot there...can anyone vouch for the accuracy of the interior shots of the rooms? The suite luxo looks swank with that ocean view balcony...about 135 a night (US) at the current exchange rate...

I don't know about apartment but the suite at Debret is indeed very nice. 2 windows with ocean view, very well lit, light colored decoration, smaller bathroom than the Roiss. On the other hand the other room on the side did not appeal to me, smaller than Roiss. Cannot comment on the bed mattress as I have stayed at the Roiss where I slept very well.

By Layne87 on Thursday, August 01, 2002 - 10:16 pm:  Edit

at 135 a night....no way rexx...we are lining up have a 5br penthouse taking up one whole floor on the beach planned for that price...by the way..the exterior has been updated to look a bit better at the debret...the room is nice(far from swank) but VERY small at that price...

Scneid229- pictures would help you I think.

By Rexxx on Thursday, August 01, 2002 - 11:53 pm:  Edit

Yeah Layne, I'm going the apartment route as well...are you working with Kenn or going direct? I was just curious as I'm having a bit of a struggle finding an ideal place, so as a back-up, I may need a hotel for my first couple days...

By Youngtom on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 12:03 am:  Edit

I believe that the premium suite at the debret does cost about 135 dollars at current exchange rates (don't worry unless you made your reservation a couple of years they won't let you anywhere close to that one).

Current (non-discounted) prices are 70 dollars for ocean-front doubles.

Rexx - I would advise having Layne take care of stuff & take it from there.

By Youngtom on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 12:54 am:  Edit

My only comment on Debret vs Rio Roiss mattress's is that that the ones in the Debret have been replaced :) In my 2 stays at the Rio Rioss, those mattress' were whatever were installed when they built the hotel. I do believe that the mattress in both hotels have received ALOT of action. weekly replacement might not be a bad idea :)

By Rexxx on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 08:24 am:  Edit

Layne, you book accomodations for travellers? I must have missed that somewhere...If so, please email me: maidenvoyage@hotmail.com

thanks...

no YT was just being funny...I am trying to teach him some East Tn. humor...we have a little work to do yet...him and I are one day are going to be best of buds if we make it thru...

IMHO if you need a hotel Rio Roiss...I liked the staff alot there..I still chat with them when I go thru...yes the beds suck as most of the beds in Rio suck...Artist apt has the only good beds I have seen down there. I do not know the devret..I hace toured the hotel a bit to look at the different rooms and I dont care for the rooms as they are too small for my big ole butt...

I am working with a new guy not on the board...will let ya know after next trip as I have no basis yet..

By Youngtom on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 06:24 pm:  Edit

Not sure that it matters but when Layne mentioned 'we are lining up have a 5br penthouse taking up one whole floor on the beach planned for that price' to Rexxx, I just assumed Rexxx was part of Layne's party & was just checking out some other options (oops). My comment was really just suggesting that the 5br penthouse sounded like a better deal that a room at the debret. I love places to stay with beach views/balconies.

By Rexxx on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 08:34 pm:  Edit

lol YT...so you weren't even joking, you were just overstating the obvious (that a 5 bedroom penthouse on the beach beats a one bedroom hotel room)...haha...yeah Layne, you got some work to do...(j/k YT...lol)

When do you head back to Rio Layne? Be sure to let us know how your new connection works out. The more options the better obviously...

What are apt prices on the beach guys? Thanks.

By Rexxx on Saturday, August 03, 2002 - 12:05 am:  Edit

physically ON the beach is very hard to find...I've found great ocean view penthouses in great condition in great parts of Ipanema for $100 per night-ish...a lot cheaper than hotels overall...

By Layne87 on Saturday, August 03, 2002 - 04:36 am:  Edit

YT -sorry for sarcasm then...

rexx --will do but new guy already built BT and I up on the 5br and it then it got rented....??!!! will ty a bit more...kind of frustrating working with someone new back and forth spending time and then this happens...

By Rexxx on Saturday, August 03, 2002 - 07:56 am:  Edit

I feel your pain...if it's any consolation, the penthouse I was working on thru Kenn got rented out from under me (the owner got an offer for 6 week rental vs. my 2 and of course jumped at it, though I had expressed interest to rent it first...) and then wound up coming available again, but at a 10% increase in price (this during the real's devaluation to almost 3.7:1). I told Kenn to tell the owner to stick it...I'm not paying more because of some "mock" inflation scenario she concocted to juice my foreign ass...Good luck with the apartment hunt...

By Hombrecito1 on Tuesday, August 06, 2002 - 06:36 pm:  Edit

Well I'm booked at the Debret...sort of.

I originally emailed them requesting info on a suite vs regular room, availability of a room with a patio, guest fee, cash discount etc...I wrote it in English and Spanish. I get an email back the next day saying that if I want to stay there I should fill out an online form and none of my questions were answered.

So I fill out a form and request a Double Oceanfront Room for the 1008R promotion for 7 days. I ask that they give me an extra 2 nights at the promotional rate since I'll be there the week. They email me back thanking me for the reservation and confirming me in a Single for 1008R with one extra night at the regular single rate and guests are 30R per guest. The single 7 day promotional rate should be 842R per their site.

So I email back for clarification on why I'm being charged a double for a single reservation and whether if I get a double they will waive the 30R guest fee. I get an email back thanking me for my reservation and requesting I fax my credit card to secure with none of my questions answered.

They either don't understand English or they just don't care. I guess I could call them or I could just figure it out when I get there.

Anybody else have a similar experience. Suggestions?

By Layne87 on Tuesday, August 06, 2002 - 08:09 pm:  Edit

fala portuguese or pay dood 5 bucks to get it straightened out...things that are important to you like you said are not that important to them...too many details for them...

By Youngtom on Tuesday, August 06, 2002 - 10:49 pm:  Edit

Hombrecito - that does sound like a bit of a mess probably due to language difficulties on their part. They will hold your reservation until 2pm without a credit card so I won't worry about that unless you have a late arrival.

I think that the confusion about single/double/guest fee etc should be easy to resolve once you get there - if you pay the double room rate (and the hotel will give you the choice) then you won't have to pay the guest fee.

I'd just wait until arrival and when you check in make sure what rate/occupancy that you are paying for. The desk folks are very nice at the debret.

By Rexxx on Tuesday, August 06, 2002 - 11:53 pm:  Edit

I got my email reservation response back and was quoted $217 Reals for an oceanfront deluxe suite (without veranda...the one with veranda was rented) As YT said, the form states that they hold the reservation until 2pm day of arrival, so if it sucks, you can always bow out...I believe the price I was quoted was for a double room, but their answers/ emails seem like auto-responses almost...they don't elaborate or answer any specific questions it seems (they ignored mine as well)...there's a big petroleum conference in town beginning of september, so rooms are filling up fast, be forewarned (I just hope these oil baron dipshits don't fuck up the termas, boites and Help scene while I'm there)

By Hombrecito1 on Wednesday, August 07, 2002 - 02:47 am:  Edit

YT-I get in early and I have a confirmation number, so I will just wing it and figure it out when I get there. I think Rexxx is right that it's some kind of auto confirmatiom. I think they see a message in English and have a standard reply to send.

YT-thanks a lot for your help in the chat the other night and all the great info you've contributed to the site.

I sent a email to debret and asked about double room for me only, and i asked about the guest fee. They say you have to pay 30R p/hour for the guest.Whats happening with debret?

By Hemp on Saturday, August 24, 2002 - 09:24 am:  Edit

Nordboer I'm sure it is not per hour. 30R per guest sounds more like it. I have reservations there in Sep. I will double check when I check in. If it is per hour then they lost a customer and I will go somewhere else. Have a great trip. Hemp

By Athos on Saturday, August 24, 2002 - 09:50 am:  Edit

If you go to their web site, they have a promotion for stay over 3 nights.

If you pay for double room, there is no charge bringing one garota at a time to your room.

I sent this email "Hallo
If i rent a double room,it is free to take guest to the room?
Im alone" And they answered "Dear Sir,

There is an extra charge of BR$30,00 per time.

Thank you

What did he mean?

By Hemp on Sunday, August 25, 2002 - 07:43 am:  Edit

I don't know about the single or double stuff? He is saying every time you bring up a girl as a guest it will be $30R or about $10US with the current exchange. For what it is worth, if I got a good looking girl and a raging hard on $10 won't bother me at all. Just my honest opinion. You'll still have a great trip. Hemp

By Hombrecito1 on Sunday, August 25, 2002 - 08:04 am:  Edit

Nordboer,

I had the same problem emailing the Debret-no questions answered and R $30 to bring up a chica. This may be for a single only, but they won't tell you by email. I'll let everbody know soon.

BTW-I have a reservation confirmed with number, but I haven't sent a credit card #. It says it's guaranteed until 2 pm and I'll be there about 10 am, but is there a chance they'll bump me with the upcoming convention? Any ideas?

I've used the debret online reservation system (with the same email message) several times. I've never given them a credit card number & never had a problem with them not holding a room. If one pays for a single then it is 30 reais per visitor - if one pays for a double then no extra charge.

By Hombrecito1 on Sunday, August 25, 2002 - 01:21 pm:  Edit

Thanks YT.

By rock3times on Sunday, August 25, 2002 - 08:06 pm:  Edit

Debret is very good. If they hold the room for you, they will till 200pm.

By Rexxx on Thursday, August 29, 2002 - 04:57 pm:  Edit

Yep, no card in advance, no money and the Debret held my room...I actually went up at 2:01pm every day for a few days to see if a room with balcony became available (ie. someone didn~t show up in time to secure their reservation) and on my third day, bingo...got room 1103, the only room besides the ocean front deluxe suite which has it~s own balcony...the extra good news is, it costs exactly the same price as a regular room at about $70 US a night...I was originally planning on an apartment, but as a newbie, there~s something kind of reassuring about having all of a hotel´s services at your disposal (doorman, room service, maid service, etc) and with the central location and price at debret, I think I´m gonna stay put this trip...it~s actually a lot nicer than I would have thought...by no means swank, but good size rooms, a big balcony, great view and it appears to have been renovated fairly recently. Beds are hard as hell though, so you may thing about a mattress pad...

By Youngtom on Thursday, August 29, 2002 - 07:31 pm:  Edit

I like 1103 - great view. I wish that it had some windows so it was easier to enjoy the view - I just kept the balcony door open the week that I had it. The ocean facing deluxes ( I haven't stayed in a suite yet) are nice too.

By Tight_Fit on Friday, October 18, 2002 - 10:16 pm:  Edit

Quick question. Do the room prices on the Debret web site include taxes? They show a promo price on a single suite facing the ocean of 1111 R for 7 nights. That's only $41 a night. Nice.

By Hemp on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 04:31 am:  Edit

Prices do not include tax which I believe is 5%. But is still a great deal. Hemp

By Hombrecito1 on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 05:41 am:  Edit

Actually I just looked at my credit card statement and I was charged 1008 R excactly for the 7 night deal. It could be they forgot to add the tax.

I normally stay in an apartment but due to certain circumstances, I am going to stay at the Hotel Debret for my fourth trip to Rio since May. First I have a few questions:

I want a room that has a couch, table, and two chairs. Is that the suite? Or do all the rooms have that?

BT

By Hemp on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 06:58 am:  Edit

BT I stayed there in Sep when we met. Here are my suggestions. Try and get the luxury suite room 1102 or 1103 they have a living room, bedroom and a huge veranda. If they are taken I would take a Single suite but they are much smaller and no veranda. If none of those are availlable I would try another hotel as the rooms are very small. Hey BT since you guys are having a big party at VIPS I know you can get a room there. If you are staying for long they will give you special rates. I envy you guys in November. I will be shedding some tears that Friday after Thanksgiving as I know where you all will be. Hemp

By Gcl on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 11:41 am:  Edit

BT--can you please explain exactly what "...due to certain circumstances, I am ...(staying) at the Hotel Debret..." means?

By Maverick on Saturday, October 19, 2002 - 03:29 pm:  Edit

For whatever it's worth, I just stayed at Debret for two nights ina Superior room with ocean view and was charged $100.00 US to my credit card. I found the room way too basic for my taste-small, cramped, and the hotel a little too rickety and old (I listened to other mongers fucking every night several doors down-actually kind of amusing). Prior to Debret, I spent 4 nights in a suite at the Meridian and was charged $1200 US. All in all, I'll take the cramped Debret again next time.

Maverick,

You might try the Luxo oceanfront next time. My room wasn't huge either, but it had just been redone. I agree the Debret isn't the Ritz, but at less than $50/night now with the exchange for an oceanfront view of Copa, I'm not complaining.

By Khunjbl on Monday, November 18, 2002 - 09:19 am:  Edit

I think if you get the luxo oceanfront try to get a 404 or any 04 higher. It is on the corner and seems the best. They have raised their guest fee if you have a single room to 50 reals from 30 reals per night.

By Rexxx on Monday, November 18, 2002 - 12:11 pm:  Edit

As far as I know, there are only 2 true suites at the Debret...1103 and 1104 (1104 is the Oceanfront Deluxe Suite...best room in the house)...I stayed in 1103 and it was great...prolly 40% larger than a standard room (at least) with it's own balcony/ veranda...well worth the slight premium on price, but these rooms get booked pretty far in advance...I got lucky during low season and was able to slide into the room when someone checked out...

By Hemp on Monday, November 18, 2002 - 06:00 pm:  Edit

Rexxx if I'm not mistaking 1102 is the front suite with the big veranda on both front and to the side. I stayed there is Sept. 1103 is the second biggest one. Sorry I don't know about 1104.
