Just out of curiosity, does Spanish work in Brazil? I had always heard that Brazilians understand Spanish, but Spanish speakers can't handle Portugues. Any truth to that?

"Tu da bom (sp)?" How are you?
You answer "Muito Bom, e voce?"
The garota says "voce gostoso", excellent she likes being with you kissing and sexo.
You answer "voce gostosa".
The chica says "voce e yo amorado", meaning you and I are an item.
Chupar means suck
Coger means fuck
Bejo means kiss
Cuantos how much
Loira means blondes
Morena means brunettes but is also used to indicate blacks.

Well that's what the board is for imho.
This is the barebone minimum as I had garotas say hello to me countless times and I could not understand.
Portuguese started to make more sense when I realized the R which starts words is silent and becomes a strong H like in horse so Rio is HeO.
And the R in middle of word is not that strong so Sada at AB is really Sara but you can barely hear the R.
The funniest was this American drink called Red Bull so I told my honey Kate at Rio Antigo, "Red Bull", she smiled and said no "Head Bull".
I will take time to learn Portuguese for my next time out as it is easy to pick up I believe with OK Spanish background. And who knows maybe I'll be able to invite Kate to dinner or get an allnighter from that goddess at Barbarella.

Alright Explorer8399, I'll try to answer your question in a non-technical way. Spanish is kinda hit or miss. I think it probably depends on stumbling upon a person who has grown up in a multi-lingual environment (not necessarily Spanish). In many cases, you can have great conversations in Spanish & do fine. On other occasions, Spanish seems to be useless. But finding someone who at least speaks or understands Spanish well is pretty easy so you'll have a great time on your first visit. For your second visit, you can learn a bit of Portuguese and communicate a bit easier. And trust me, going to Rio is like making a pact with the devil; you can't only go once; you'll be back.

The real expert on the Spanish-Potuguese topic is PowerSlave. He speaks both with near native fluency and has kived in both Rio and TJ. But me being a fool will give it a shot.

75% of the words in Spanish have a Portuguese cognate, but the pronunciations are often different. There are just more sounds in Portuguese than there are in Spanish and the phonetics are different.

I believe that YoungTom hit it on the head, when he said that a Portuguese speaker who was used to a bilingual environment can understand what is being said in Spanish. The trick for a person like one of us who speaks Spanish as a second language (I am being kind here) is to speak slowly and clearly and don't get fancy. Like the TJ girls do with us. Use the subject pronouns and repeat yourself.

As Athos might recall, one night in front of help we sat with 2 Barzilieras and a German guy. He spoke German and a little English. The girls spoke a little Spanish. I tried to provide translation services. One of the girls wasn't sure if the guy understood that she was a "programa garrota". He had serious jet lag and the entire conversation was hysterical as I tried to avoid the word prostitute.

Eventually we all understood and a good time was had by all.

He is an american that lives here. Speaks fluent portuguese. Can you have success without this help. Yes but since I do not know the language he has done extensive translation services for me. We hang in front of help and look things over and then decide where to go. If you see something he does the bartering as I am not good at this part at all. Plus all the girls have cell phones if you want to repeat with any of them outside clubs. Funny thing yesterday...I wanted to tell the beach girl yesterday she had the nicest tits I have ever seen. Could not get the point across with phrase books. Called Don and he translated quite well. He charges $200 for airport transfers both ways and as many nights as you want help. Sorry guys..yes I got married for a few days. I am back a little know. Camila has been by my side everyday and it has been kind of nice as she is so much fun and a sweetheart as well. I have gotten to a few places to update you.

I have to retract my statement of talent being higher. After being here one week it just seems the place is not jumping as it did in January. The termas have good girls but I dont see as many this time I have to have. It has taken my longer to chose this time. Help has a few lookers but on average I would say 6.
