What hotels allow guests without any problems? The main reason that so many people stay at the Rio Roiss is that it is very 'Garota friendly'; if the woman has her paperwork then she is in.

The Debret Hotel is pretty friendly as well althought I've heard that sometimes they have problem with visitors in the daytime.

Wilmaflint reports recently the Atlantico Copacabana Hotel was very friendly.

A hotel does not quality as garota friendly if you have to bribe the night watchmen or sneak your garota into the building inside of a trunk.

Others?

The more I go to Rio, the less I have come to care about the hotels' policies. Admittedly, most of us want to avoid undo hassle or scandal, so if your bringing in an obvious hooker (and, I mean REALLY obvious)stay at one of the hotels YT mentions above. I happen to like the Debret and think the price is fair, so have not seen reason to try some place else. However, I would not have much trepidation with staying at any of the other Hotels. Really, what are they gonna do? It would cause more of a scene to challenge your choice of company in public, than to just let it go.

I do not do that many overnighters, but love the occasional morning or afternoon visit. I meet her outside somewhere and just walk her straight to the elevator - have never once been charged, questioned or otherwise hassled. These are typically terma girls I have come to know; so the risk factor (as in theft) of not having a girl register is much diminished.

I had no problem getting my friend into the Savoy Orthon on my last visit. She had to sign in/no guest fee for her.

By Youngtom on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 03:45 pm:  Edit

Well, the Marriot and the Orthon Palace are definitely not garota friendly so don't stay at either of these places if you want to have friends over. Unless you are able to literally bribe the desk folks, they won't let garotas in.

Here is Dood's comment about the Hotel Oceana Copa from another thread -

I'm at the Oceana Copa hotel now, next door to Monte Carlo. This place is the Waldorf Astoria compared to the Rio Roiss. Very very nice Hilton quality hotel, for the same price. R$160/night for a double, king size room. Guest friendly. [:)]

YT: After about seven years of giving Rio Othon our business, we'll be holding our next bi-annual w/shop @ Marriott. Are you saying they are really hard-assed ?? Eleven of us (seven rookies and four veterans) are to be there for a week along with nearly the whole .BR team in May. I hate uncertainity :(

By Youngtom on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 12:35 am:  Edit

Hey Thumper - wasn't it you that posted the comment that the Marriott won't let any female guests into your room unless they register when you check-in. Can you confirm this for CityDude? Have you found out any other infomation on this? Thanks.

By Gitano on Tuesday, June 18, 2002 - 06:37 pm:  Edit

Sorry I am so late, but I have read posts that indicate that the Marriott has a no guests in the room policy. They used to charge $40.

By Thumper on Tuesday, June 18, 2002 - 10:33 pm:  Edit

I just stayed at the Marriott about 2 weeks ago and they now allow you to bring in girls with no guest charge(providing that you are booked double occupancy). They stopped allowing girls for a couple of months around Carnival because they were experiencing so many problems. It got to the point where alot of girls were going into the bar on the second floor and trying to pickup guys to go to the room, they knew that if you could afford to stay at the Marriott during Carnival, then you had to have some serious money. It is normally $250/night, so I can only imagine how expensive it is during Carnival!!!

I urge anyone who stays there to use some discretion!! This is a 5 star hotel, try to bring back a girl who doesn't look like she just came off a street corner. (This is exactly what the hotel doesn't want) My friends alwways tell the girls to bring a extra set of clothes so they aren't embarresed when they are walking around the lobby.

By Citydude on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 - 01:20 am:  Edit

I was in Marriott three weeks ago. Unfortunately, and depressingly something, someone other than a garota prevented me from getting company to my room. As I have alway mentioned on this board, Upscale hotels want to avoid garotas (many in Copa) who are not discrete.

By Thumper on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 - 09:25 pm:  Edit

Huh? Can you explain what happened Citydude? I was in the Marriot from May 23rd to June 4th and I along with all 7 of my buddies never had a problem bringing a girl in. The only thing you had to do was register her at the front desk, also you couldn't have more than one girl at a time.

We made sure that we never walked in with girls who looked like they just came out of Help, even the girls themselves wanted to make sure they were properly dresses before entering. One girl actually went to the mall to buy a second outfit because she didn't want to walk thru the lobby with the clothes she had on. ( She lived 1.5 hrs away)

By Citydude on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 - 11:54 pm:  Edit

As I mentioned - something, someone other than a garota -- Well, a partner in our company decided to bring his wife, a college going daughter and friend - They were in the same floor and next door to me. Two other senior management decided to bring their families too :( Read the gory details when I get a chance to write the trip report.

Did not want to risk my future promotions unless ....

By Thumper on Thursday, June 20, 2002 - 09:20 pm:  Edit

Damn, that sucks!! Too bad you couldn't move to another floor and just give them an excuse like "the air conditioner or toilet, wasn't working properly". I'm lucky, my bosses want to go with me on my next trip to Rio!!

By Citydude on Friday, June 21, 2002 - 01:48 am:  Edit

I earned my upgrade, they paid for it :) This year might not make gold on Marriott.

Whats the best hotel between rio roiss and debret?which hotel have longest way to help and solarium?

By Athos on Monday, August 26, 2002 - 09:59 pm:  Edit

Nordboer
Roiss is cheaper than Debret. Debret has nice ocean view if you get the suite while Roiss has no view. Both have breakfast included. Bathroom is bit larger at Roiss.
Debret is on ave Atlantica south of Help, 2 short blocks. Roiss is 1 street inland 1 block from Help.
Solarium is on other side of lagoon so your best bet is to take a cab. Walk from either hotel to ave Nossa Copacabana 1 to 2 min walk, 2 blocks inland.
I don't know about Debret's bed but Roiss bed is OK. I always slept good on it.
Check the other thread on termas and direction. Worse case scenario, print the maps and addresses and take a cab.
For Help, you should be able to walk safely at night with heavy police presence.

By Nordboer on Tuesday, August 27, 2002 - 09:15 am:  Edit

Thank you for answered so fast Athos,I m going to brasil for my first time.Im looking forward to it.

By Youngtom on Tuesday, August 27, 2002 - 06:04 pm:  Edit

Good answer there Athos. Debret & Rio Roiss are very comparable. Beds are a bit soft (only a problem when there is lots of action with a guest) at the Rio Roiss. IMHO the main reason advantage that the Debret has over the Rio Roiss is the ocean view so make sure to get a view if you stay there.

Both are good, moderately priced hotels that seem to be recommended by many.

Apts and other hotels are other options.

By Rexxx on Thursday, August 29, 2002 - 05:03 pm:  Edit

Definitely strong private security, federal police, and civil police presence in Copa, which makes walks from Help to Debret about as safe as you could hope for...Actually had an exciting moment the other night riding back from a boite with Don when we heard screeching tires and sirens, and our cabbie pulled over just in time for us to see the cops corner a car directly in front of us and actually pop off several gunshots directly at the back of the vehicle (luckily we weren~t in the line of fire) before apprehending the baddies...this all went down literally ten yards in front of us...can you say adrenaline rush? lol...

By Youngtom on Thursday, August 29, 2002 - 07:35 pm:  Edit

Police road blocks are also common at night. I believe that they are looking for drugs & guns for the most part. They've always waved my cabs thru the road blocks.

By Bwana_Dik on Friday, October 04, 2002 - 04:21 pm:  Edit

Another guest-friendly hotel is the Luxor Regente, just a block from the Debret. If you get a double room, there will be no guest charge. They will hold the girl's ID when you come in, and will call you to assure that everything is kosher before they give it back. This hotel does cost more than the others discussed above (other than the Marriott and the Othon Palace, that is).

By Sbronx77 on Saturday, October 05, 2002 - 06:50 pm:  Edit

I haven't made reservations yet, but it was suggested to me to stay at the Hotel California on Copacabana. Are they "guest friendly"? Or maybe I should decide between the Debret or Rio Roiss. To all, any suggestions??

By Hombrecito1 on Sunday, October 06, 2002 - 06:45 am:  Edit

Sbronx77,

I don't know about the California, but the Debret was perfect for me. About $50/night for a two sided view of Copa, double occupancy. Actually will be more like $40 with the exchange. If you're there for 7 nights or more make sure to get the 7 day promotional rate.

Thanks for the info, HC1. Question: Should I reserve now at the Debret or wait until I arrive in Rio? I'm not really fixed on my arrival date.

By Hombrecito1 on Sunday, October 06, 2002 - 09:12 am:  Edit

You can email the debret if you have some sort of an arrival date in mind. They will send you a conformation, but will ask for a credit card to guarantee it. I never did this-they will keep your reservation until like 1 or 2 pm without it. Don't bother asking them questions in your email because they won't be answered.

I'm guessing you'll have to give them a date of some kind to get a conformation. You might also call them to check different dates. The receptionists all speak English I think.

I am staying at the Inter-Continental for carnaval this year. I found out that they allow "guests", but they charge an additional R$75 for an unregistered overnight guest. That is not too bad considering that I am only paying US$105 per night to stay there during carnaval.

Hi All, does anyone know if The Arpoador Inn has a website that you can make reservations on or how to make reservations with that hotel besides using ipanema.com. Thanks to all that can provide info. T-rex..

By Athos on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 - 08:48 pm:  Edit

Do a search on yahoo, plenty of third party web sites to book online. Try +"rio de janeiro" +hotel

T-rex;
Anything wrong with ipanema.com ?
i doubt arpoardor inn has a web site.

By Trex701 on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 - 04:25 pm:  Edit

ipanema.com, makes you fax a form to them in Brazil with all your vitale creditcard info on it, I just want to avoid that if possible. T-rex..

By rock3times on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 - 11:19 pm:  Edit

last time I did submit credit card info to ipanema.com , everything turns out OK
other option is to call Arpoardor directly, and I do believe, they require your CC info as well.
Debret Hotel does not ask CC upfront and hold the room for you even you arrive late

rock3times, if you say you had no problem with it, then I will give it a try. Thanks for the help. T-rex701

I am going to give Marriott a try. I'm sick of staying at the Debret with their crappy rooms and A/C.

It seems that people have different experiences with Marriott. I've been all over the world at Marriott and I find the key is to look as you know where you going. If you stop and look like you are looking for instruction, you'll get nabbed.

Secondly, you can ask the bell hop or security guy about a club before you go there. Then when he implies that there are "Pros" there, you then ask him what it would take to bring someone back. Since you bothered to strike up a conversation with them, they have a tendency to drop the price drastically for their bribe.

I also found that if you want to pick up someone that looks like they came out of the Help, you should dress like you were going to the Help. If you are both dressed in the same manner, there are less questions asked.

By Bwana_Dik on Friday, November 01, 2002 - 07:17 am:  Edit

I've stayed at the Arpoador at least 15 times, always booked through ipanema.com, and never had a problem. Just be sure and book an oceanfront room, as the others are too small and either noisy or without windows. If you call the hotel, they will tell you to book through ipanema.com.

Anyone have any experience with the Savoy othon?I'm booked there the day after Thanksgiving. The $45 rate sounds too good to be true. It is a fleabag?

Do not stay at the Miramar palace, no guests no EXEPTIONS. I was there for only one night so I had to do the Vanity for a few hours.
I stayed at the marriott during new years with a buddy and they allow guests at no charge just check her in at the desk.
It was a little embarrassing because we stayed for six days and everyday we had problems.
(on our Behalf)
they would not let us bring two girls up. I had to wait downstairs for an hour because my buddy was upstairs getting busy. It was much of a traffic problem but that was my first time to Rio after going again in Aug, renting the apartment is the way to go. You just live and learn.

The major downside of hotels vs apartments is you cannot have multiple guests at the same time. So if you are into 3somes and festas, apartment is the way to go. If amount of dinheiro saved is not much, I would go the hotel route myself with maid service and free breakfast.

I am planning to book a room at the Atlantico Copacabana March 17-21. This will be my first Rio trip can anyone tell me about the hotel?
Thanks Roadglide

Roadglide, The Atlantico is hit and miss. They will allow guests but at a charge. It isn't a bad hotel, just not a really good one either.

By Roadglide on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 04:41 pm:  Edit

McLapp; Thanks, how far from the beach is the Atlantico, and can you walk to the monger sites without problems, or will I need to take a cab to the termas etc?

By Mclapp on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 07:03 pm:  Edit

Roadglide,

Not too much of an issue with walking, depends on the Terma.

Macmac how did you get that deal of R$140 for a suite, on their website is priced at R$240 for a suite,is that a single or double suite, I have read bad reviews of blameitonrio, do you recommend blameitonrio, can they get a good deal on hotels?

I've used Bobby for 6 years and never had a problem...I got the double suit for R$140. I'm not aware of any bad reviews about Bobby...he was pretty well thought of on the old redsnake board. I'm sure he's goofed once or twice though...don't we all:)

New member here. Experienced world traveler, but new to Rio. Going there in a month or so, and planning to stay at the Savoy Othon. How are the rooms, and is there any hassle for one o more guests ?

By Thumper on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 12:44 pm:  Edit

Best thing to do is to call and ask them before you go to Rio. If they say no guests or if they have a large guest charge, there are plenty of other hotels to stay at.

By Ardgneas on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 06:01 pm:  Edit

Ams661, as Thumper says checking in advance is the only way to know for sure. If the attitude is similar to the Rio Othon then expect hassle.

I've been distinctly underwhelmed by what I've seen of the rooms in the Othon hotels (Rio Othon, Trocadero Othon). The reception area of the Savoy Othon looks okay but I suspect there are better options in Copa both in terms of price and guest policies.

Anyone stayed at the promenade?
by the address I guess it's right on the track.
Not bad for $R140 suite
any restrictions on bringing the duplas up?
