And for about R$200 ( US $86), any woman in Brazil is yours. But in any event, if any of you guys out there have ever thought about going to Rio, now is the time to do it!!!

Most of the electricity in Brazil is hydro-electric. Apparently the rainfall in Brazil has been very light the last couple of years so there is a shortage of water to generate electricity. Earlier this summer there was talk that it would be necessary for everyone to reduce their power usage or face increased rates. There also was some talk of power outages (aka California). How has the electricity shortage worked out this summer?

Brazil goes off of daylight savings time on Sunday, Feb 17 so at that point there will be a 2 hour time difference between the East Coast (of US) and Rio.

Dengue is still going around. It sounds like the first time that you get it is kinda like a bad case of the flu. 2nd time you get it can kill you. RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- The line at Rio's Miguel Cuoto Hospital wound its way out the big emergency unit and down the street, a sad collection of sick and melancholy people in search of relief.

Some had crutches and bandages, others sported cuts and bruises, while the only sign some were suffering was etched in faces as long as the line itself.

The ones with the long faces, the ones invariably suffering from sore heads and soaring temperatures, had dengue fever, the new epidemic afflicting Brazil.

So far in Rio de Janeiro this year, at least 29 people have died from the
most serious form of the mosquito-borne disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever -- 17 more than in the whole of last year, according to state health officials.

The city has registered about 60,000 cases of the disease, more than twice as many as it did in 2001. And experts fear that as many as 1 million people in Brazil will contract dengue fever before the outbreak ends.

"Everybody has dengue right now," says Sonia Martines, the mother of one victim.

As serious as the Rio epidemic is, however, the problems facing doctors are not just restricted to Brazil. Today, dengue is spreading across the
Americas at a rapid rate, health officials say.

The disease is present in 27 Latin American countries, 22 more than in 1980, according to officials with the Pan American Health Organization, the regional arm of the World Health Organization.

In addition to the Brazilian epidemic, Cuba is suffering its most serious
dengue outbreak since 1981, while Venezuela and Peru have also reported outbreaks.

"The rapid expansion of dengue to new areas, especially in its most severe form, makes it likely that in coming years the countries of the region will witness the highest levels ever seen of the disease," says Dr. Jorge Arias, a communicable disease specialist with the the Pan American Health Organization.

To the relief of doctors, most Brazilians falling ill are not contracting
dengue hemorrhagic fever but one of the four less potent forms of the
disease, which cause severe, flulike symptoms but are not fatal.

The outbreak has caused widespread panic in Brazil -- primarily in Rio --
where soccer stars, television celebrities and politicians have all come
down with the disease. Sales of Tylenol and mosquito repellent have shot up and special candles said to ward off the Aedes aegypti mosquito that
transmits the disease are selling like hot cakes. Some trade associations
estimate that dengue has depleted their work force by as much as 30 percent.

"I've seen epidemics but nothing compared to this," says Dr. Gustavo Leao, the chief of emergency operations at the Miguel Cuoto hospital. "We have 1,800 people a day coming here. Some people are waiting five or six hours to be seen by a doctor."

Leao blames the country's politicians for failing to prevent the outbreak.
He scorns the efforts of health authorities who he says have not done enough to take action or warn Brazilians about the threat of the coming plague.

Like many experts, Leao hints at his contempt for Jose Serra, who resigned as health minister in February to run for president next October.

Leao says Serra and others in the federal government did not invest either
in prevention or education, or in hiring people to carry out vital
fumigation tasks, when the outbreak was still in its early stages.

Leao also echoes criticism of Serra's rival for the presidency, Rio Gov.
Anthony Garotinho, for his lack of action in allowing the disease to spread
so readily in his home state.

"The two of them are playing politics," says Leao. "They are more interested in protecting their presidential bids. The measures that should have been taken were not taken."

Physicians want to know what happened to the $4.6 million given by the
Health Ministry to Rio state to fight dengue but was never used.

They are angry that 217 vehicles bought to transport fumigation equipment have not been used because authorities say they are "not appropriate."

In addition, they are disgusted with government officials for ignoring their
advice and firing hundreds of government health workers after a previous
dengue scare in 1999.

In a belated attempt to help combat the disease, state and municipal
authorities have hired or transferred more than 10,000 people. The military volunteered 1,300 sailors and soldiers to go door-to-door in fumigating risk areas, and nongovernmental organizations are running courses to show people how to identify and clean up sources of stagnant water.

The fear, however, is that it is too little too late.

March is Rio's wettest month, and the rains that bring down the curtain on
the Southern Hemisphere's summer threaten to further aggravate the problem by providing more opportunities for the mosquitoes to breed.

"The circle of the epidemic goes from January to April," says Ronaldo Cezar Coelho, Rio's Health Secretary. "I think the numbers are still on the rise."

When I was in Rio back in Febuary, I was talking to a friend about going for a swim at the beach in Copacabana. My friend mentioned that something like 100 cases of Hepatitis had been reported since the beginning of the year in Rio & that most of these cases came from swimming or walking in the surf on the beaches around Rio especially Copacabana (apparently there is some dumping going on into the ocean around Rio). It would be interesting to know which flavor of Hepatitis one can catch at the beach in Rio. I know that there shots for Hep A & B so it might make sense to get some Hep shots for Rio (depending on what flavor floats around at the beach)?

First impression, man it is warm down here for a SoCal hombre.

I must echo Youngtom in reference to Centaurus. The only reason to go there is to verify that it is a ripoff.
