I would just purchase a r/t trip ticket to BA on Varig that allows for a free stopover in Brazil. Depending on the sequence of the cities you are visiting you'll probably only need then to buy one one-way ticket between rio/SP.

Check out the Varig web site snakebomb. I just purchased a trip in August. LAX to BA (nonstop LAX - GRU with change of planes at GRU to EZE), EZE back to GRU. I am on my own to get to Rio. Then you get back on in Rio to LAX (plane stops) in Sao Paulo on the way back. This ticket is $795.50 with taxes.

The trick here is that you fly Varig with to BA with a stopover on the way back. You only get one stopover. I am stoping over in SP because I know people there, and want to see the garotas there.

If you check the TAM web site, there are frequent low cost flights from SP (Congohas) to Rio (Santos Dumont). Both of these airport are near the center of town, and taxi cost are much lower.

The TAM web site is www.tam.com.br. This site works in English. You also get a membership on this site, and get e-tickets. If you have American Airlines frequent flyer membership, you can get credit from TAM.

On Varig, you can get United frequent flyer miles.

Another trick for flying within South American is to use United Mileage plus. For 25,000 miles from Mileage Plus, you can fly round trip anywhere Varig flys in South America. I have done Lima / Sao Paulo 3 times this way. I have also done Sao Paulo / BA 2 times this way.

Hope you do not have to pay 2500 to do Rio and BA.

One TJ vet purchased a last second ticket on Varig Rio-BA for about $300 I believe, it is less than 3 hours flight.
Sao Paulo has better looking garotas than Rio but one Paulista told me Cafe Photo, 150R to get in and 600R for take out. She works at Bahamas Club so her quotes may be incorrect but she knew the Barbarella pricing.
She mentioned good hobby scene at Sao Paulo and Bahia (of course I have no way to confirm).

I didn't know UAL credits Varig flights. Great info. I flew to BA last month on UAL 777, service was excellent and plane was barely 1/2 full. UAL gave excellent service as I postponed my return 4 different times and they only charged me 100usd extra. My friends were on AA and they made them paid for the entire new tix. How're Varig's planes and services? My other buddy was on Avianca to EZE, and he said the plane was extremely small, could be a 727 or 737.

Service and meals on Varig are pretty good. Varig trip is also a couple of hrs shorter, but the 13 hr LAX to SP is sure one long flight. Try and get seat 15C if you are on that. You will be first out, and now one sitting in front of you on the MD-11.

Both on the way to SP & from SP last month the fligh was about 1/2 Japonese. Of course, SP has 2,000,000 them so you can understand. The Varig flight to LAX continues to Tokyo, and on the way down to SP, the flight is a contiuation of the Tokyo return flight.

Varig stewardesses sure beat the United ladies. Not that the United ladies are not nice, they just do not have that Brazilian back side.

Glad we saved you some money. It is also a shorter flight.

Another interesting way to go to BA is to take Copa. The flight is from LAX to Panaman, and then it continues to BA. This is the shortest travel time of all. Tickets on Copa are sometimes the cheapest. Also, for an additional $50, you can stopover in Panama on the way back.
Copa flies 737's, and they can be a little crowed, but on the way back you leave BA at noon, and are back in LA by midnight.

I personally think that all long as the rate stays above 2 reais per dollar that garota prices are cheap/reasonable.

Athos: I will offer my two worthless cents of commentary as to why this trip was not as good as your last one. What this trip lacked (aside from this being your second trip to Rio, and the first one will always be special) was the continuity and connectedness that Claudia provided to you on your first trip. This trip seemed to be a series of relatively short-term or discrete encounters. The only thread throughout your trip seemed to be your flirting at Barbarella and your saudade for Juliana. I recall reading your first trip reports and wondering where is this Claudia-thing heading and how is it going to turn out or resolve itself. She was a dependable back-up and sure thing, but she added some drama to the trip that lasted until the very end. She may not have reached true “wife” status (freebie), but she achieved “going-steady” or “fiancé” status. Claudia helped to make the first trip special. This trip lacked a Claudia. Juliana had the potential to be Claudia and make this trip equally special, but things just didn’t work out.

My last trip to Rio had much the same quality as this trip had for you. For the first time, there wasn't any drama or thread to my trip. In the previous trips, I was banging a lot of women, but there always was one or two mulheres that gave the trip(s) continuity and added excitement (of not knowing where these relationships are leading). In addition, these women gave me a sense of somehow being connected to Rio. I lost my "little black book" and all of my Rio phone numbers (still another lesson in backing-up data) a couple of months before making my last trip, but I assumed that everyone would be in Rio and in their usual haunts. Of course, no one was around. They all were "com familia" in various parts of Brazil. I wasn't thinking in terms of "wives" at the time but towards the end of the trip I was thinking (like you are now) that this trip isn't turning out to be as good as the other ones--even though I experienced a reinvigorated sense of freedom of movement and action. You had Claudia, Layne had Camilia and Dood had Sabrina. We can joke about wives and steadies but they do give our trips added excitement, fun and depth. You didn’t get married or hooked-up this time. I wasn’t and didn’t get married last time. Maybe, you chose not to get attached. Attachments are not without its costs and baggage. However, I think you would have gladly carried Juliana's baggage. Thanks for helping me understand what was missing from my last trip. You are not only a walking hormone, you are a genius, as well. Nice, thoughful post - Wilma & I share the sentiments of others. I think some of us are more willing than others to let our feelings hang out there on these adventures. Most of the girls that we meet also really aren't willing to expose their feelings - they're just making some money, maybe having some fun. Sometimes you'll meet one that that is willing to take that risk but isn't always obvious when that happens. I have gotten to know a girl over the last few trips that was willing to get involved & before I really figured that out on this trip, I screwed up by running around town having fun. So in any event, she's not really talking to me anymore. It is always a little sad to leave Rio but especially so for me today (my flight is this evening).

1. I do not pursue terma ladies as they work a full schedule so I preferred to keep Juliana a fantasy.

I have all info for BA when you're ready. I'm sure the quantity and quality wouldn't match up with Rio, but overall it would be an excellent lifetime experience, at least it was for me and for most mongers I have had the pleasure and honor to party with in BA.

One big surprise from reading your posts was that you don't seem wanting to live in Rio like you used to. Was it because of the thrill is gone, quality didn't match up expectation, your ability to communicate had boosted and leveled the playing field, or was it the cost issue even in the low season? I think crime is a big issue, garotas from outside Rio seemed bothered by Rio lifestyle.
But Kudos for policia presence, one car by Help, another by Miguel Lemos and Aires Saldanha.
If we lived and became local cariocas, no need for garotas on the program as gorgeous ladies available.

Ideally, I'd say I wish I could monger to Rio 4 times a year but probably not interested in living there...but give me a job paying me in U.S. dollars and I'd sell my house tomorrow.

I indeed took one for the team yesterday and went to Centaurus. I was the ONLY GUY there at 5pm. Me and about 35 girls. As usual, it's impossible to have a bad time at any terma I've been to but, I can say I will never return there again. It really reminded me of a 70's porno in there. I didn't get charged the "tourist tax" (again, for some unknown reason, everyone thinks I'm brazillian). I will say Centaurus has fewer ugly women, but no where near the quality that could justify the cost of 2.1 trips to 4x4.

Also, the women in there were pushy as hell. I don't know if this is normal, or just because I was the only dick in there. Made me very uneasy. I was also uncomfortible with the fact that I HAD TO pick someone, because I already paid. Don't get me wrong, it's not a horrible problem to have. I picked priscilla. Cute as hell blond. Great time.. But the place in no way can justify the R$290 cost of admission. At 4x4 it takes me at least a half hour just to decide between all the ones I want. At centaurus it took me that long to find one I would do.

I never said I was immune. It's just that when I feel the emotional connection happening I back away. Just can't get that one girl out of my head. The only thing to do is to stay away from her club. I know my obsession will only get worse if I feed it. It's probably best that i can't get back to Brazil for several months. BTW sorry about your aborted trip...I feel your pain.

I was in 4X4 about 5 times last week, had a awesome time!! It is my favorite terma, both in price and quality. There was one strange thing that happened to me, when I was paying my bill for the evening, the girl behind the counter strongly suggested that i should give the 30R change to her and her friends as a tip! I asked her why would I do that, they aren't doing anything but ringing up my bil, its the girl in the room who deserve a tip. She got a real attitude when I didn't tip her, a couple of my buddies were also asked for tips on different occasions.

Termas 21 and Termas Buenos Aires I believe are one and the same. Termas 21 is not exactly on Rua Buenos Aires, it is on an alley connecting Rua Rosario and Rua Buenos Aires. It is not a high quality terma in termas of women but does satisfy a niche. I wanted to do a threesome but did not want to go for the cash. They had a promotion which allowed for two girls in a cabin(which were as roomy and clean as the other termas) for 20 minutes for 80r. The entry fee was 15r which included 5 drinks.
