One last question - Because of frequent flyer points, I will probably have to fly into Sao Paulo. How far and how difficult is to go to Rio? How much should it cost? Can I just get there and pick any taxi?

Check to make sure your carrier doesn't either fly to GIG through São Paulo or have a partnership with a company that flies GRU-GIG that will allow you to use your FF miles. Otherwise, you can find RT tix at around $200, but most of the cheaper flights go out of the SP domestic airport (not GRU) and into the Rio domestic airport (Santo Dumont, not GIG).

In any case, you can grab any cab, and it's cheaper to grab a metered cab (yellow) than a radio cab (other colors). If you don't speak the language, just write the hotel name and address on a3x5 card and hand it to the driver.

Rio-SP was very cheap as of last May with deals on Gol and VASP. I got RT for R$280 Santos Dumont-Conghonas, you can do better on deals on the net with Gol as low as R$170.
I usually don't do tln but on my last trip I made an effort to try it. Well if you ask politely, most garotas will stay overnight especially the semi pros. If a garota likes you, she will offer to stay the whole day.

For day time action, best is to collect numbers at termas and let them know you will call them in the morning. The beach on Copa can offer some options but not right now during low season.

No...sorry, I thought you were talking about a cab from the airport into town. Cabbing from SP to Rio isn't an option; way too far and expensive. There is bus service, but you really don't want to go that route unless you know your way around, speak the language, and really can't afford any other means of getting to Rio. Check out a map--it's a long haul from SP to Rio.

SP to Rio by bus is cheap like R$40 but it is an overnight ride but bus has AC I believe. But heck no time to lose on vacation, the plane shuttle is awesome, 40 min and you're ready to go.

price is sometimes steep, however. but it is just great being able to just show up at cgh and then be in centro (rio) an hour and half later total.

Rio-Buzios is R150 for locals, R200 tops (>R300 for a gringo tourist not knowing better). Rio-SP would be about double the distance... Does that mean you could get a taxi for under R400? And you better speak enough portuges to negotiate it.

Plane is best option.

Flhobbyer. Rio-Buzios is 18 Reais or less each way from the central bus station (Rodoviaria). Comfortable bus, reclining seats. About 2 1/2 hours with a rest stop at a very place with restaurant, shops and bathroom. When you arrive, you will be met by a group of hawkers seeking to set you up with a place to stay.
