Barra (pronouced "Baha") da Tijuca is a very upscale suburb of Rio that is located south/west of Rio. The beaches are cleaner and there are are lots of restaurants, shopping places, and stuff to do here. It's about 20-25 minutes by taxi for Copacabana, tell the driver "Baha pelo Avenida Atlantica" This will take you there by the ocean where you will pass Pedra de Gavea, and Dois Irmaos, beautiful rock formations that rise up along the seaside. There is a long stretch of beach named after the brazilian surfer/hang glider "Pepe" (apparently Pepe's glider crashed a few years back in a world championship in Japan & Pepe lost his life). I took bus 175 (this is a local - 1 real); there are express tourism buses as well (Campo Grande, Santa Cruz, Alvarada as well as #523 for the beach) but I still haven't figured out where to catch them (these cost 4 reais). I was looking for a section of the beach called Barraca do Pepe but I don't believe that I ever found it. The beaches in Barra are beautiful. And lots of great girls hangout at the beach in Pepe Unlike parts of the beach in Copacabana, most of the girls on the Pepe beach are not pros but IMHO most of them are much better looking that pros that hang out in Copacabana.

Nomalhombre - what is the difference between Pepe & Barraca do Pepe? Where do you like to go to the beach up in Barra da Tijuca?

Ever hook up with any of the non-pros in Barra da Tijuca? Is this a good place to recruit in the off-times when the termas aren't operating?

Will be in Rio 8/5 - 8/10. Then back for two days from 8/20 - 8/21.

I really don't know what that action is like in Barra da Tijuca. I'm going to spend a few days up there next trip. Given that about all I do in Rio is wait until about 3 or 4pm for the termas to open, I figured that I might as well spend my mornings/afternoons somewhere that has great beaches (rio's are okay but are a notch or so below Barra's). I'm still planning on zipping down in a taxi each afternoon to do my termas crawl.

I still don't understand this thing about Barra de Tijuca. You can go there by bus on Ave Atlantica or go by small mini vans. Yes they have cleaner beach and bigger mall so I am sure some knowckouts to look at. But where are the hookers??? To me it's a big hassle to travel that far. I'd rather go to Rio Sul to go shopping and it gets me halfway to 4X4.

By Badseed on Sunday, December 15, 2002 - 09:56 am:  Edit

Athos:
There are no hookers in Barra (at least not hanging out on the beach). For your "narrowly focused" interests, stick with Copacabana and Gloria.

Don't think anyone ever has suggested that Barra is the place to go for working girls; it's just an excellent beach. If you just want beach time with lots of eye candy, a trip to Barra is worth the time. This gets you away from Gringo Gulch (Copa) so you can see a less touristy side of Rio.

I probably wouldn't go down to Barra just to go shopping. There are a number of stores you'll find at Barra Shopping that you won't find at Rio Sul, but unless you're looking for something very specific, Rio Sul is much more convenient.

By Badseed on Sunday, December 15, 2002 - 11:25 am:  Edit

Yeahbut... Barra SHopping is also a nice plac to "shop" for non-pros (if that's what you're looking for). Less tourists than RioSul, so more chance of wowing a shopgirl, my favorite non-pro targets.

Badseed, I totally agree. My Brasileira girlfriend coaxed me into taking her to Barra Shopping and I was absolutely impressed with the garotas that go shopping there. This is where the garotas from Copa come to spend their money that the mongers spend on them. The mall has everything, very modern, huge cinema complex next door and many places to eat. If I were going to live in Rio, this is where I would settle down. The place resembles many suburban places in the USA, except the babes are a lot better looking without the attitude. Yeah, I think it would be a great place to go "shopping", if you know what I mean.

Barra is where i always stay when i go to RIO. It's not congested, and has great shopping/restaurants. Pepe beach is quite a sight.. It's only about a 7 or 8$ cab ride to Copa/Ipenema when you wanna play w/bad girls....

I am staying at the Casa Del Mar during Carnaval next month. Can't wait

Barra da Tijuca Mall

I made several trips to Barra da Tijuca on my recent trip. The shopping mall at Barra had some of the most beautiful women that I ever saw. Most stores had beautiful women working or buying something. I highly recommend taking a stroll through the shopping mall and see non-GP's in action. The maintenance workers were gorgeous females in tight spandex - only in Brazil.

Barra beach

The beach in Barra is gorgeous. It is extremely clean and you don't have to worry about stepping on condoms or bottles. Post 1 or Post 4 sections of the beach are recommended by terma girls. Post 1 has kite surfing and wind surfing schools. I am disappointed that I wasted so much time on "Hooker Beach". The vendors on the beach are not like jackals and they leave you alone. In order for you to buy something, you approach the vendor. This is the exact opposite of what occurs on "Hooker Beach". Going forward, I will spend more time at Barra beach.

My most embarrassing moment occurred on Barra beach. Coffee_Maker beat me in a 100 meter dash on the beach. Losing to someone 20 years older than you does hurt your ego. The grin on Coffee_Maker's face was unbearable for the rest of the day. I want a re-match.

Howard -- I'm confident the only reason he beat you was that he was running to the bathroom. Ever since his unforturnate blowback incident he has held the speed record for the "trot" to the nearest john.

Howard It really was relaxing to get away from the vendors.- I'll give you a hint. While racing in the sand don't choose the ankle deep sand to run in. Also it helps to look straight ahead and not at every Bunda you pass by. I'll be ready for the rematch. Lets go 200 meters next time.

Every year 350,000 people die in bath tub related accidents. And every year its never SF Hombre. Hope he has a great trip.

Dood is right on as usual. Barra Shopping is a large shopping mall with stores of all types. The beaches in Barra are really clean with lots of "eye candy". A visit to Barra during your trip is well worth it. - Hemp

Hey Hemp,

Have you figured out where those other termas in Barra are? I think the count was up to about 7 after we talked to that one garota in 4x4 the last time I saw you, and she made a quick list for us.

By Hemp on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 07:18 am:  Edit

Cat - I visited another one Club 600 and it was terrible although I did do a little sweet 18 year old on her first day on the program (am I bad or what?). I also visited Pigalle and it was terrible also but really doesn't get going to late at night. As far as other ones I don't know, I heard of a new strip club on the Praia called Club 12 (posta 2) but haven't been there yet. The best in town is Praia 400 at posta 1. Hurry back Cat, all the garotas are asking about you buddy. - Hemp

LL...Most definatly....eye contact is the move there.

By Lovingmarvin on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 10:57 am:  Edit

The entire stretch of Barra Beach, after about 8 or 9pm is full of program girls standing on the street. Actually, in my opinion, there are more on the beach street in Barra then in Copa. But they do not tend to stay as late as the Copa girls, so I would recommend 9pm - midnight.

Around the Sheridan Hotel area there are usually a bunch.... Also, many of the girls hang-out at the bus stops. They are very easy to identfy.

If you have a car (i.e. rent one), then there many opportunities all up and down the beach.

By Catocony on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 11:28 am:  Edit

LM,

The street walkers in Copa are to be avoided as the general consensus is they're drugged up, sick, thieves, etc.

Do you agree with that, and if so, how does the street scene in Barra compare? I would assume that since there is a limited "traditional" scene in Barra - only a few termas, not a huge number of prives/fast sex/massagems, no Atlantica restaurant/club scene, no Lido scene, etc etc that the girls working the sidewalks down there are probably not in the same category as Zona Sul street putas?

By Bwana_dik on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 01:01 pm:  Edit

Some of the girls who work at Praia Club 400 hang out on the beach in front of the termas before it opens. In the past you could grab a girl from there. Haven't done it in some years, though.

By Lovingmarvin on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 08:37 pm:  Edit

Well, some of the street walkers go in and out of the Balcony Bar and other Copa hang-outs. Some girls make much more money on the street then with one single program at Terraco Atlantico. I have even met a couple of 'Help' girls, including a VERY cute blond, working the street at times and 'Help' other times. The same applies to several Balcony bar girls. So don't fool yourself into thinking one is necessarily better then another, just because of where you pick them.

Now with that being said, you mentioned drugged up and being thieves...that really applies to quite a few - in the street, TA, Help, or Balcony Bar.

I always hide my money and any other valuables regardless of where I picked them up.

Now, I think the majority of problems from the street girls really are not from girls at all - some of the TV's are very convincing and they are very well known for stealing anything they can get their hands on.

Many of the Barra street girls come from Rocinha and generally deal with mostly a Brazilian clientel. I have found some real good ones along the beach.... so far, I have never had a problem. I usually just cruise in my car which greatly opens up the opportunities. So far, have not had any issues with a girl robbing me....the TV's all hang out in one area in Barra and seem to be much easier to identify and avoid..... tall, agressive, etc....

I have actually about four regulars I frequent, including one that gives the most fantastic BBBJ in Rio, two of those are in Copa and two are in Barra. They are real sweethearts. Never rush me and are just great.

By Catocony on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 11:04 pm:  Edit

I always laugh when a garota tells me that Ronaldo isn't gay and didn't mean to pick up those trannies in Barra, since he was too drunk to realize they were trannies. Beside the fact that most are obvious to us and thus are completely obvious to Brasileros - especially one who lives right next door in Recreio - they do tend to congregate in certain spots and if you're in those spots, you're looking for trannies. On Mem de Sa and the street beside the park in Lapa, down near the corner of Prado Junior and Atlantica, then up in Posto 6 just before the Sofitel. They're incredibly easy to avoid - or find, if that's your goal.

By Lovingmarvin on Thursday, August 20, 2009 - 08:02 am:  Edit

I once read somewhere that it is hetro/straight guys that go for TV's, not necessarily gay guys. I guess that can be argued varies ways.

I remember playing a (very bad) trick on one of my friends with a TV. He/She was extremely convincing and looked quite hot and was working on the street. We passed by in the car and I slowed down to get her (It was obvious to me, but not my friend) to talk to us through the car window. She reached in through the open car window, pulled down the zipper, grabbed his dick, and gave me friend a quick BJ right there! He was in shock....I was laughing and thought it was hilarious. He/she said R$20 to continue and my friend - pushed on by me, of course - went to the back seat to get things finished. Well he finished with a BBBJCIM pretty quickly, but also along the way noticed him/her moving one of his other hands right to his pocket to lift his wallet. He caught it in time and grabbed the wallet away from her....

So the moral of the story - the one time where I am playing a very bad joke on my friend - he almost got robbed and his wallet pick-pocketed by a TV. Something that has never happenend with the real girls that work the street the many times I have been with them - that is why I had dropped my guard temporarily. But if you pick up a girl in Barra or Copa on the street, stick lock down the fort in advance like you would if you where to pick up someone from 'Help'. Most of the working girls can very easily get tempted with some easy money that they can easily steal without being caught.

To round up the story about my friend, however, I did tell him afterwards that it was a TV. He ended up spending all night long searching the Internet for HIV/AIDS stuff and could not sleep. Since then he had a couple of test as well... he is vowing to get me back one day. Good thing we are really good friends :-)

In summary, I like the street girls options (just stay away from trannies, even that is your thing :-). They are cheap and you might be surprised at the good quality you can find along the beach streets in Barra. There truly are some hotties to be found. I have known a couple of other guys to do the same and they have always been happy. One oil guy I know works in Barra and used to live along the beach there, but now has moved to Ipanema. He told me that he picked up those girls along the beach all the time....and the whole time we were talking about it he had a smile on his face.

One word of advise on prices - Now, I do not know if I am being charged more because I am a gringo - but expect to pay R$20-$R30 for a BBBJ (many BBBJCIM to be found as well), or R$40-R$50 for everything. So even if I am being overcharged R$10 compared to a Brazilian, it is still quite a deal (at least for me) :-)

By Catocony on Thursday, August 20, 2009 - 10:14 am:  Edit

LM, congrats, after this post, you've eliminated probably 30 guys from asking you to hook them up with girls you know. Unfortunately, a couple of guys will probably inbox you to find out where the trannie hangs out.

By Lovingmarvin on Thursday, August 20, 2009 - 12:09 pm:  Edit

rsrsrs....yes! Beware :-) My buddy comes to Rio only once a year for one week. I still remember him asking me for reassurance that it was a girl....."Of course, yes".... I cracked myself up big time. I just didn't expect it to fuck with his head afterwards to that degree.

The problem is not the 90% that definitely have some type of obvious trait of being a TV, but those other 8% that are "maybe's" and the remaining 2% you can never tell! As far as I know I have only run into the 98% and being able to avoid them, but if I did get a BJ along the way from the remaining 2% and did not know at least it does not make me gay :-)

Man, now in Thailand that is entirely story.... there it might be closer to 50/50 of not being able to tell at times. That certainly would suck and complicate things if the street scene was same in Rio.

But the regular girls generally do not mix with the TV's. The TV's tend to hang out in groups....with very few exceptions. If one is a maybe, and the rest look like one for sure, just give it a pass.

By Latinalover on Friday, August 21, 2009 - 06:11 am:  Edit

LL, it pays to know the terrain and to know where to find drinkable water and where to avoid the undrinkable pools. That said, if you've ever been to Termas Rio Antigo, Lapa, Praca Lido or Posto 6, you would have definitely noticed the trannie hookers walking around, especially on your to or from Rio Antigo.

By Lovingmarvin on Friday, August 21, 2009 - 08:26 am:  Edit

Of course, but Lapa and that area is not even part of the discussion. There are only TV's walking the street there...They are not just by the Termas, but also walking up and down the streets where the nighlife is, i.e. Carioca de Gema, etc. I don't even think there are regular girls there.

I certainly never have or would even consider looking for a program there. In Barra and Copa the story is a little different.

By Lovingmarvin on Friday, August 21, 2009 - 08:58 am:  Edit

One additional general note - anyone who has spent enough time in Rio will know where the TV's hang out, with or without an interest in them. Lapa is one of the more popular hang-out places in Rio and passing Gloria where many trannies hang out is part of the way (there are actually a couple of different path's there, but this is pretty major one - especially leaving Lapa for Copa). The area by Copa on both ends (i.e. by lemme and closer to Arpoador/Ipanema) is almost unavoidable to drive by. Barra, is another story, but if you live there, just drive by the beach at night, or going to some of the nightlife there, again pretty hard not to notice them.

Another area - on the way from centro to Sao Christavo, close by Villa Mimosa, again many trannies hangout there. Unless you are blind, you will notice them while driving by.

With that being said, even you have an interest in them (which based on some past contributions on this board cleary indicate we have members that do), I strongly advise to avoid them. The trannies in Rio have a very bad reputation and many are very dangerous. Many rob and steal like crazy.... now, I don't know what percentage, but enough comments have been made by Brazilian friends, or comments on boards, etc, that I am convinced it is a pretty high percentage.

So, unless you never leave the area around 'Help' and never venture out to other areas in Rio, you would have to be either blind or oblivious to the trannies.

Now, going back to topic - I think the street action in Barra is fantastic! Overall the ratio from trannie to real girls is small, and thankfully mostly concentrated to one area.

What is the name of the Terma across from Pepe beach in Barra? I want to hit Pepe beach this trip and I remember reading some old posts about a terma you can walk to from Pepe beach. Any current info on this Terma?

I don't know about the name Pepe beach but you might be thinking of Praia 400 right across from the beach? Don't have current intel but use to be great. When I lived at the Sheraton I would go there 2 or 3 times a week. Opens at 6:00 if I remember right. Have fun. Barra is excellent. The Sheraton is excellent but pricey! - Hemp
