The article is bad enough but the proposed TV show?? Great just what Rio needs fresh hordes of US mongers. It's bad enough that the strong Euro meant more Europeans this year pushing up prices.

I'm lucky enough to have been going to Rio since 1997. CF has just discovered Rio and seems intent on ensuring his 3rd and subsequent trips are ruined. How perverse!!!

I did not know where to post this so I will here and I hope that it helps someone. Here is the story. I brought a nice garota from Sao Paulo to Rio for the weekend. Cost 500R cellphone nothing else. Anyhow Sunday night tonight we wanted to get a pizza and she wanted a CD etc. and we went to Shopping Barra around 7:00pm as we were coming back ( staying at the Rio Sheraton in Leblon ) we get pulled over in a police sting They got us out of the car. Now listen to this they only patted me down looked in the taxi only a small amount did not open the trunk. Then one of the cops asked me for ID I showed him my Sheraton cards and said we only left the hotel for a hour or so to get a pizza. Here is where it starts to get a little freaky the cop walks away to one of the cop cars and all of a sudden two other cops with their machine guns start pacing back and forth in front of our taxi. The cop in charge or so it seems came over and talked with me and the girl. He asked the same question about the ID and said I had none. My girl then told him she didn't have her card either. He said that's no problem we are just interested in the tourists. They started chit chatting about how the girls in Sao Paulo receive a good education that they understand english unlike a carioca like himself. How good looking she was and a bunch of other shit. He then tells me well you will have to go down to the station with your documents and would have to pay a fine although he did not know what it would be. I figured lets end this dance and I pulled out the money from my shirt pocket. The story changed and we could be on our merry way for 100R. I gave him 100R and my girl said that I was still going to get a ticket. I said to her in english no this is what we call "shakedown". Which was what it was a 100R no documentation. He starts patting me on the back and saying sorry he is just carring out orders. Well if that is the case how do you keep track of the money you bring in and for what fine. Pure Bull shit. So carry a photocopy of your passport. They were only pulling over taxis and it was about 5 min from the Sheraton on the Barra side. This was my fourth time to Rio never has this happened to me so I don't ever think about my ID. Will now. Hope this helps someone and if others have similar experiences please share. Are they trying to piss off the tourists now?

This happened to me in the same area as Irv around the same time. The road that turns from ave. atlantica into whatever and leads past the sheraton, to hotel vips, the other sex hotels there, and further down to barra de tijuica. I was on my way to vips with a girl in a taxi, we got pulled over, patted down and they asked for 200rs, i gave them 50 and was on my way with the girl. This is the only time I have had trouble with the police but it definitely wasn't fun. I wasn't that scared but the girl was afraid they were going to plant drugs on her or I and take us to jail so she is really the reason i paid it, and even then less than they wanted. assholes they are.

Anyway, this doesn't make sense to you if you don't speak portuguese, but she basically says am i a candidate for your girlfriend...i don't want sex, only to kiss. Ok guys, I learned an important lesson about dating in brasil today.

Do to my success with the experience I wrote about above, I decided to give it another shot. I had written a few emails with the girl and we agreed to meet at the mall for lunch. Fine I am thinking, I will take this girl to lunch, then to my place and she will definitely be a hot carioca.

Nao Nao Nao. The girl shows up at the mall with her mother! This is the first time I am meeting the girl! She is 24 years old and has finished university here. Not only that, the girl is ugly, and fat, definitely one of the ugliest brazilian girls I have seen. She sent me some photos before and she looked good, so I dont know what happened, but there she was fat and ugly.

Anyway, so I talk to her and her mother for one hour over coffee (luckily I had about 5 beers before the encounter so I was more cordial than I would have been w/o them). After that, her mother being comfotable, they took me for a driving tour of barra de tijuica, recrio, and the rest of the area. BTW, the beaches in barra de tijuica are very nice if you want a place where not many people from the favelas are and not too crowded.

Anyway, after our tour, we go to a restaurant and her mother leaves after dropping us off at the door. During lunch, she proceeds to tell me I am good looking and she wants to date me, also that she is catholic and does not have sex until marriage, and that she likes america very much, etc. etc. The lunch cost 150 reais and I paid for it just to be a gentleman.

Then she calls her mother, her mother picks us up and takes us on another tour of a different area, this takes about another half hour. Then her mother presents me with several presents from the girls father (a polo shirt, hat, pen, keychain, etc. from his company) and her mother brought me some chicken to take home for dinner.

Anyway, so then they insist on her mother cooking for me and my going over to the house today for lunch and dinner and going to the beach with all of them. I just wrote her an email nicely telling her there was no ^chemistry. Anyway, please learn from my lessons if possible. It was good in the sense that I got to hang out with an upper class brazilian family for a while, but it was definitely much different from any date I have ever been on and don~t want to repeat this experience.

As you founf out, in situations like this, Brazilians take any interest at all, even if it's just "being polite" , as a big green light. Very big misconception.. You can thank hollywood for that. The Federal Police and the FBI work together a lot. Most recently with that mobster that was picked up in Copa a few months ago.

That news story is true, up to the part about the abduction and murder in the USA. You can read it in the USA press from a few days ago.

The part about trafficking women is 100% BS. But it's quite common in Brazil to repeat those kind of prejudices. In reality, Brazilians are much more likely to mess with underage women than gringos are.

This 25 year old American arrested in Brazil had the improbable name of Jesse James Hollywood. In the Rio newspaper photos he was a good looking dude. His pregnant girlfriend however, looked like something a dog spit up. Interestingly, for a time he lived in Copacabana not far from Help.

The main culprits in messing with the little girls are the German and Swedish tourists who flock to the cities in NE Brasil, where this is a much bigger problem. They come in organized tour groups, and a few have been busted over the years.

ok, thanks guys, i got confused about the trafficing part because she is always telling me that people are trying to traffic women all the time, etc. but i guess this is a murder that was not involved with the "ring" she assumes exists or whatever.

There is not much they will eaxtradite for. As I recall reading once;

Murder or other heinous crimes;
Kidnapping;
Acts of Terrorism;
Drug trafficking;

and; it seems like one or two others.

There were not many and all were criminal related.

What are the best hobby activities for Saturday and Sunday, given that many termas are closed? Is Help and Barbarella more active on weekends with more amateuer actions?
