Solarium actually is small in terms of the well known termas. So it is as laidback as you are going to find in terms of a termas. And laidback does not mean quiet. The boite in Solarium is very lively; all the walls have mirrors; the DJ plays music that the girls like/love. Many of the girls are into samba dancing so most of the women tend to line up and samba dance, looking at themselves in the mirrors, samba-ing a million miles a minute & having a great time. It really is a sight to see. And the looks of the women that work at Solarium is extremely high and there is not as much variance as some termas (If looks is your only criteria then you should go to Centaurus; it is full of gorgeous young women but unfortunately there are so many women in Centaurus that they panic about finding a guy for the night that some of the less attractive women can make your time in there miserable).

Since the girls are dancing & having a great time the club ends up having a great atmosphere. I'd imagine that generally there are somewhere between 15-30 girls working at Solarium at a time.

Once you change into your robe, you walk up to the bar/boite. Order a drink & it is very easy to sit back, check out the scene, & once you see a woman that interests you then you wave her over. I don't know why but they all seem to be very easy going beautiful nymphomaniacs (it is Brazil so I guess that goes without saying).

Youngtom, can you give a price rundown on Solarium? I'm planning my first Rio trip for November.

Your approximate total costs are going to be about 150 reais (currently US $54) if you go to a cabine (40 minutes) or about 200 reais (currently US $72) if you go to a suite (60 minutes). With the exception of Centaraus, prices in most of the termas that us tourists visit are about the same ie 150 for cabine and 200 for plain suite. Centaraus is getting pricey; probably more than it is worth.

I just fired off an email to solarium & if they respond then I'll post the detailed price information here.

With those prices, how can one NOT afford to go to Rio?

BTW - Solarium has consistently been my favorite terma. I highly recommend it.

Wednesday & Sunday are swinger days at Solarium. There are still primarily mostly guys there on Wed/Sun but you see couples mingling with the guys. Tried to get into Solarium on Wed night about 9:30 pm ...waiting room was packed with about 10 25-30yo locals....english-speaking desk guy sadi no numbers/lockers available for 30-45 min....asked him how he could be so sure? He shrugged.

My lesson learned.....based on three Rio trips....get to termas relatveily early, so you can have the pick of litter as they are coming in....you may have to fight off the dogs you fon't want, but that 's better in my mind that going into a packed house where all the high-value target have been acquired.

Man, that hurts not making it into a termas. On my last trip, something similar happened to me at Solarium. After missing flight, I returned to Solarium (I had done my pre-flight warmup there) and the door man said we're closed which didn't make it any sense to me as it was few minutes after 11. And they should have been open until 2 that night.

Did you guys take any dengue fever precautions? (Yeah, like it even crosses your minds.) Does dengue fever even make it as a topic of conversation at the termas? (You want a mosquito bite, big boy?

I didn't do anything for dengue fever. About all you can do is wear long sleeve clothes/long pants (when it is 100 degrees F - right) and use bug stray. I keep forgeting to put my bug stray on.

Get into the termas before the office crowd gets off work. In by 5:30-6:00 PM and visitors should do fine.

Good advice CityDude. The night that they told me that they were closed was a Sunday night & they probably were just full due to all the swingers. Although you would think after my all appearances in there during Carnaval, you'd think they'd have granted me VIP status or something. Maybe I was getting on their nerves.

No metro nor bus route to Solarium but check their website to print their map as some taxicab drivers do not know its location. It's by Rua Jardim Botanico northern part of the lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas, north of Ipanema and west of Copa. Looks really close but usually 15R ride.

Athos, I think it depends on the skill of the cabbie.It cost me as much as 15R or one time less than 10R.Also if you go around around rush hour it will cost more.Coming back the second time I had my only experience with a dishonest cabbie in Rio.He had a doctered meter and came to about 20R in no traffic.I just paid it rather than get into a scene with him,but I let him know I knew he was cheating me.

Actually it is easy to take the bus to Solarium but not from the Help end of Copacabana. Those Lido guys can get the Solarium for less than 25 cents.

For that matter, the Urca/Sugarloaf (511/512) bus will get you to Solarium but it is kinda of milk run. A taxi is the way to go (8-9 reais).

I've found that with all my visits to Solarium that I know the shortest route to Solarium (price 7-8 reais); practice makes perfect

YES..this place was my ace in the hole for the last few days and it seems like a good move..they still have some winners in here...I was getting worried most termas going downhill during slow season...I spotted about 5-6 that would do me just fine the last few days to get me over my divorce from Camila.

Quick update on Solarium.
