First, discount out of the $250 weekly fee the shit you would certainly pay for a la carte - airport pickup and return, about US $15 each way. Wanna no what the first clip is in Brasil? Ok, so now, out of the $250, you're really only spending $205 because otherwise you pay a la carte for airport taxis. Cell phone rental is included with the rate - Ken, correct me if this is no longer the case - and that will run you a la carte US$ 3-5 per day. For the week, just average that out to US$30, so now the $205 is really $175 because you would need a phone regardless of a guide. You definitely need a phone to call and get called by all your new amigas, right?

Ok, so now you're down to $175 for seven days of actual guide service. This isn't just help with translations and such. This is making sure you don't get clipped by a hotel or apartment owner, a waiter or a termas. Insurance if you do have a problem with a girl or something. A whole variety of things that can go wrong in a country where you don't speak the language.

Keep in mind Blazers, English is much more prevelent in Thailand and the PI and even in Mexico than it is in Brasil. Peace of mind is important and if you're not familiar at all with your surroundings and can't communicate much at all, that sucks a lot.

I'll sum my argument up (by the way, the only thing I've ever paid Don for is a few apartment rentals and a few airport pickups) with two facts. One, I've never met anyone who wasn't very happy with the services delivered. Hundreds or even a few thousand happy customers with no unhappy ones can't all be wrong, correct? Sure, a few of the guys just didn't like Brasil but they did like what Don did.

Second, the whole issue last year with Bob dying - Don and crew worked their asses of on getting all the paperwork squared away (there was a ton), getting the cremation performed and finally getting Bob repatriated - I think it was easier getting astronauts to the moon than getting Bob and his personal items back home.

I'll join the rest in saying that I think Don's and Ken's service is very valuable. Unfortunately, I didn't meet Don til my 4th trip. By that time I knew the scene fairly well, but I guarantee you I would have wasted alot less time my first visit if I had been able to use his services.

For those who want to "hit the ground running" on their initial trip, I think what they offer is more than worth the cost.

I also want to reinforce that there are elements to Don's services that make it very worthwhile. I have always used his services, and I have been in a number of fucked up situations in some crazy places and the only place I have ever used a guide was in Rio, and the overall experience was rewarding enough that I will always use Don when I am in Rio.

When one of my best buddies was puking his guts up with food poisoning at 4 in the morning, we had a doctor at the hotel who Don trusted and took care of him. I know of several different guys who Don has bailed out of bad situations. We might think that most of the guys who travel in our circles know what they are doing, but there are a lot of guys naive enough to fuck something up, in most cases Don keeps them from fucking up.

I met AZ guy through Don, and we had a great time in Rio. We took AZ guy out with us to the termas, and gave Don a break. It is great to have Don and Ken around to keep you up to speed on stuff, get u at the airport, get u drivers that don't rip you off, interpret with your dreamgirl, your terma girl and the girl at the supermarket. But they are just as comfortable helping you when you need help and making sure you get where you want to go, driven by someone you can trust and it takes just a little bit of the concern out of the situation.

I highly recommend them.

I think its more useful and productive to speak about the actual experience.

If you were in Rio in 1988 then I can understand why you feel the way you do about not needing a guide. Girls, girls and more girls everywhere. Heck just the fact that girls freely walked around topless on the beach must have been quite awesome.

Blazer: I only have one comment for the use of Don and Ken's services.

Thank you Don and Ken for getting Bob the AZ CatMan back to us in Arizona.

They provide a service WAY beyond a guide service. When Bob was unable to take care of his own needs Don and Ken stepped in to makes sure he was taken care of.

Bob's was an unfortunate situation that we would all like to forget ever happened, but it did and Don and Ken stepped up to the plate.

The AZ team is on its way down to Rio for the 1st annual memorial AZ CatMan Rio extravaganza. 7 of us will all use Don and Ken's, over priced and un-necessary services.

I cannot think of any one I would trust more than Don and Ken when I am unable to take care of myself.

We will be in Rio enjoying Don and Ken's Apartment arrangements, Airport Transport, Phone Use, Translation Services, Guidance and Scheduling. Not to mention their friendship. Yes it is a paid service like the GDP's I suppose but after Don and Ken's help with Bob the AZ CatMan I think not.

Blazer thanks to the chance for all of us to express our opinion on the use of guide services and mostly our use of Don. BTW my buddy Dave in Rio also thinks it is a waste of money to use a guide for that price. But we only have 10 days in Rio and think of it as a concierge service. If you have used them is any World Wide Hotel you will pay over $300US in a 10 day period and I don't think you would ask a hotel concierge for any of the kinds of things ou ask Don and Ken to arrange.

I'm glad you can speak Portuguese because I cannot and the ability to hand the phone to a gal that does not speak english and have Don or Ken translate and any hour of the day or night is priceless.

This might be the wrong place (thread) to say this but I just read this report and saw the pictures and I feel like I have to respond. Brazil may not be for you. Rio has lots of girls in a user friendly environment. I find lots of beauties, but many times the girls I think are hot; my buddies think are not. If you are very picky, you may want to consider spending some or all of your time in Brazil in Sao Paulo. Not as user friendly, but 5 times the girls to choose from than Rio (if you can locate them.... SP is huge and not as easy to get around in as Rio).

It may be that you do not like the "brazilian look". If thats the case, I agree with you, why waste your money coming here?
