Checking airfares, I find that Premium economy on EVA is about US$2500 . I can't bear to think of that long flight in coach with my fat ass.
Thai Air's non stop from either New York or Los Angeles is about $1500 in Premium. Done.
Check in at LAX is quick and smooth, but there is a line a mile long for baggage screening along the Thai Air counters. The friendly agent tells me there are other bag screening areas around the corner. It wasn't easy to find, but the one I found had virtually no line.
Thai's non stop uses the A340-500 Airbus, without a doubt the quietest craft I have ever flown. The seats in PE are decent, comparable to EVA's 777 Premium. If anything, I would have liked a little more recline and the footrest a little higher, but overall for a 16 & ˝ hour flight it was acceptable. Each seat has AVOD entertainment, which is outstanding. About 45 on demand channels of movies , shows, as well as games. Also a nice pillow and large blanket, a small amenity kit, and a bottle of water. Newspapers and magazines are offered before takeoff.
In flight there were 3 full meals with periodic passings of water and juice. The meals were decent enough, small portions of appetizing food and enough silverware to open a small restaurant. No exaggeration, each meal consisted of a napkin containing 2-3 forks, 3 knives and 3 spoons, real heavy duty metal, not plastic crap.
Arrived Bangkok on time like 0600. Immigration and baggage claim were swift and I headed down to the lower level to catch a Taxi Meter. There was a light rain falling and the queue was short. The driver told me 400 baht, I replied "meter", he nodded and informed me of the tolls. No problem. Arrived at the Majestic Grande, 190 on the meter, 110 in tolls, 60 plus 50 airport fee. I was a little concerned being able to check in so early, but it wasn't a problem. In fact, after unpacking and a shower, I still had time to hit the breakfast buffet which was included in my room rate. I booked this hotel through Asia Rooms, about US $82 a night inclusive. I have stayed here before and really like the hotel, the rooms, location, and their breakfast is the bomb.
Returned to the room and crashed until about 1400. Went out to exchange some money and the sky opened up on me. I ducked into the Subway/Coffee World next to the Majestic Suites and grabbed a Latte. Sat on the 4'x8' patio and let the caffeine get into my blood. Traded some dollars and headed up Soi 4 to get a manicure and pedicure.
Later that night I ate at a Lebanese restaurant in the lower level of Plonchit , where the Villa supermarket is , across from the JW Marriott on Soi 2. Good food. Headed over to Nana and Angelwitch. 2007/06 Baddog - Macau: A Little Wild, A Little Weird
Here I am back at Suvaranabum looking for my ride. I arranged for a Pattaya transport from Mr. Toom. He was a few minutes late, but we were on our way shortly.
