That is pretty funny. Blazers is the only person I know, from anywhere, who has ever called me PC. It makes me laugh every time he does it.

Some of you should be able to tell what I do for a living by my username. I have also been in other related fields where I can say from personal observation that criminal activity is not confined to minority communities. No one, at least I haven't said it, indicated that racism is confine to only white people. But most of these other groups have enough class to keep those view wheer they belong. That statement is utterly correct. The key to detoxifying racism is not to get on a soapbox and (a) proclaim how un-racist you are, or (b) bash the racists. That is too easy and generally gets nowhere, but the planet (and this site) is full of limited people who don’t understand this. Sure, challenging racism has its place. But the key to detoxifying racism is to look inward with honesty and courage and acknowledge your own racist beliefs, stereotypes, etc. ANYBODY who undertakes this task (a) will uncover all sorts of nasty shit, and (b) comes away more compassionate and courageously just. There ARE several Frederick Douglass Libraries, and plenty of monuments dedicated to him (Ever been to Rochester, NY?).

There ARE several Malcolm X Boulevards. There's one major one in Harlem, Bedford Stuy and at least one that I know of in Roxbury, MA. I think there's one in Oakland. There's one on the web http://home.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/mxb/. If you've ever read the Autobiography of Malcolm X (obviously you didn't), you know that he moderated his position considerably, bravely examining his own racism, before the end of his life. That's when he became truly dangerous to the status quo. (A simple concept--start with the man in the mirror). And you know that the Nation of Islam mostly just talked the talk... You gotta be kidding about the street thing. Lots of African Americans have major streets named after them. For instance, Sammy Davis, Jr in Palm Springs...

MLK, Jr. was extremely effective at changing people's attitudes, and painted a credible picture of a brighter future. His form of non-violent protest was much like Gandhi's--very risky and costly but ultimately effective, hence all the fawning politicians. I agree that he's been somewhat sanitized and museumized by modern day propagandists. But to call him a pussy shows fundamental ignorance.

I was in Rochester, NY one time on business in the winter and got very ill(the flu).

I was referred by the hotel to a physician Fredrick Douglass and yes he was black. I couldn't resist and ask him if he was related and he smiled and said yes, but didn't say if it was great grandfather or how related.

I felt it inappropriate to mention that my great grandfather(from Alabama) was in tht Fifth Alabama Calvery was was wounded at the Battle of Murfesboro(sp?) and of course was not a great supporter for freedom for slaves.

To throw in my two centavos, here is my daily experience with immigrant bashing. I work in an office with a Laotian woman and a Mexican guy. Outside the office are 8 more Laotian woman that do fairly menial work so to distract themselves they sit and gossip loudly in Lao all day long. They are otherwise some of the nicest ladies you would ever want to meet and they treat me well and bring me food every day(OK, chicken feet and various other things they consider food but I have learned to accept their good intentions and eat up what is served, fermented fish sauce and all) They really are sweet ladies. But, the Mexican guy who came here as a child and speaks perfect English constantly badmouths them, their "jabbering", their food, everything about their culture and then spends half the day going out of his way to speak Spanish to anyone who knows it even to the Chicanos that speak Spanish only as a second language to English. Followed by more bitching about the ladies speaking Lao. Mexicans themselves are as bad or worse immigrant bashers than anyone. I have learned to get used to the Spanish and the Lao but I just have to laugh my ass off seeing the Mexican guys blood boil because the Lao ladies aren't speaking English and he can't stand it.
