I pick 8400 for next week

It has been all around good, with many winners dramatically outweighing the two small losers.

8256 for next week.

Are the markets closed this Monday for Rodney King Day?

Actually, the other stock that didn't get assigned is a break even. The only one that I lost a little on this month is NVDA.

Yes Market closed Monday for my birthday, January 15th.

Oh I guess it is also Martin Luther Kings birthday which is just a coincidence to the holiday.

Oh well, thought I'd post the recent numbers. Things are flat, best analysis I've heard about the upcoming high-noon duel at the crescent moon ranch is that if cowboy Saddam backs down, that's good, if cowboy George hits the mark and things are over at 12:01 that's good, if shooting goes on, and on, and on, that's bad, and if other people get the duel delayed again, ah shit, let's get this over with. Of course I'm only interested in the effect on my portfolio so I'm hoping we blow the fuck out of Saddam and his military and we rename Iraq to ChevronTexaco.

Let me repeat my prediction:

If the stock market on Dec 31, 2003 is lower than it was on the first day of trading in 2003, George Bush will lose his re-election, even if the market is lower by 1 cent.

You heard it here first.

BTW, whatever happened to the war on terrorism?

Jarocho, I don't know of any, maybe that's my problem.

War on terrorism? The enemy is dispersed and lying low, just gotta keep them there.

Here is a stock I started accumulating last March (I have bought it three different times)and they have been doing very well in a bad market. They just kicked up the dividend to a $1.00 a share from .80 and I have received over $4500 in dividends and option income in the past10 months(mostly option money).

I don't want to sell this stock as i am very bullish on it, but if it moves above $32 in the next few months I will then sell the 32 1/2 calls.

I sold the 30 Calls twice last year and received almost $3800 and the options expired worthless both times. One of the few stocks i think is a good value in this type of market. I COULD BE VERY WRONG AND YOU COULD LOSE ALL YOUR MONEY ON THIS STOCK!!!!

By Kendricks on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 - 03:39 pm:  Edit

What is the name of this stock, Ben?

My covered call recommendation of the month is PMCS. It has, in my opinion, a healthy balance sheet, and as of today's close, it was at 5.81, and the Feb 5 calls were selling for 1.2. Not counting commissions, this is nearly an 8.5% gain, if assigned.

Of course, I could be wrong and you could lose all your money on this stock, blah blah blah.

Ldvee,

Speaking of France and Paris in particular, it is one of the few large cities in Europe that has never had to be rebuilt because of war.

Thr French surrender so quickly that their enemies never have to drop bombs or fire artillery.

The French would definitely be a good second front for George W.

By Kendricks on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 - 06:47 am:  Edit

If W attacks the French, he would *definitely* get my vote in 2004. I'm really looking forward to the fireworks in Iraq, too. Last time around, I didn't get to see any of the CNN coverage...

They also should line up some entertainment for periodic breaks in the action.

This tax bill proposed by Bush is dead on arrival with the dividend deal and will have to be revamped.

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

By Andrew Gelfand
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
NEW YORK -- The prospect of war with Iraq has turned a spotlight on America's reliance on foreign oil, and some investors are betting President George W. Bush will give a nod to alternative energy in his address to the nation Tuesday.

Shares of alternative energy firms like Plug Power Inc. (PLUG), FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCEL), Active Power Inc. (ACPW) and H Power Corp. posted sharp gains on the sentiment earlier.

"It's our understanding that George Bush tonight will bring up fuel cell programs that may rolled out on grander scale with the Department of Energy in the coming weeks," David Smith, analyst at Salomon Smith Barney, told Dow Jones Newswires.

A significant alternative energy program should be released within the next two weeks through the U.S. Department of Energy, Smith said.

His comments came amid reports that two senior White House officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Bush planned to propose a significant increase in spending on research of hydrogen fuel-cell cars, part of an expansion of a program he announced in November, in the state of the union address..

The president will announce the initiatives in a new push to reduce the country's reliance on foreign oil, Smith said. The State of the Union is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST.

Shares of alternative energy companies responded very positively. Plug Power Inc. (PLUG) jumped 35.1% to $5.47, while Hydrogenics Corp. (HYGS) rose 13.8% to $4.38 and Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLDP) gained 14.1% to $10.62.

FuelCell was up 19.2% to $6.82, Active Power Inc. (ACPW) climbed 16.9% to $1.73 and H Power Corp. rose 30.6% to $4.18.

"The fuel cell 'concept' stocks often react favorably to structural news that favor the long-term adoption of alternative power technologies in mass markets," Smith wrote in a research note released Monday night.

The administration's commitment to a fuel-cell program could be "continued with the budget announcement next week and a possible renewal of the debate on the National Energy Policy..." Salomon's Smith said.

With profitable products still in the conceptual stage for fuel-cell companies, their stock prices tend to move on perceptions of potential demand, he said.

Shares of fuel-cell companies could emerge as a trading opportunity over the next two to three weeks, he said. He reiterated his positive view on Plug Power and Hydrogenics.

The speculation that the administration was moving toward fuel cells was also helped by an article that appeared on Fuel Cell Today, said Sanjay Shrestha, analyst at First Albany. This week, the Web site, devoted to accelerating "the commercialization of fuel cells," published an interview with Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham in which he discussed the future of fuel cells in the U.S. The energy secretary gave no specifics, but said the government is examining a further commitment to fuel cells.

"The whole thing here is (fuel cells) are good technologies from a long-term standpoint," but need more meaningful products in the short run, Shrestha said.

Neither Smith nor Shrestha own shares of the companies mentioned in this story.

Here's an interesting situation. Last week (among other trades, all of which are working out) I bought 600 shares of BRCM at $17.26, and sold the Feb 15 calls for $2.95, for a total risk of $14.31 per 100 shares (4.8% profit if assigned, not counting commissions).

It turns out that one of the top executives of BRCM is a big fucking pussy, and resigned his position in order to work on his marriage. This shocked a lot of shareholders, and BRCM is now at 13.73.

My options are:

1. Hang tough, see if it rebounds, and sell new options (or simply sell the stock) after expiration day in Feb if the stock is not assigned.

2. Buy back the calls I sold for .65, and then either sell the Feb 12.5's (currently selling for 1.70), sell the stock for a loss, or wait to sell new options after a bounce.

Any thoughts?

By Ben on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 11:20 am:  Edit

I would wait, but who the hell knows in this market.

I could have sold the stock on January 21 for around $5.90 and lost around $650. I will have the chance to buy back the Feb. Calls for perhaps less than I sold them f(my best choice)or they might expire worthless or I might let them get assigned

By Kendricks on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 02:08 pm:  Edit

I think I'm going to wait, instead of locking in a loss. If it holds its ground from here, selling the March 12.5's next month would at least get me to around break even on the trade.

Hey Ldvee,

Have you heard how consumers are buying/accepting the ground beef in the Giant Eagle stores? They started selling ground beef treated by SURE technology about a month ago.

BRCM keeps fucking falling. I bought back the Feb 15's for .4, and sold the Feb 12.5's for 1.3 this morning, in an effort to cut my losses. Maybe I should have just bought back the options and sold the stock. Time will tell.

By Ben on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 10:31 am:  Edit

I did notice yesterday that a lot of analyst are down on BRCM, of course most high tech stocks are in the toilet.

I think you probably made a good move as you would think it would have support at this level. Unfortunately the overall market is not helping you on this stock

By Ldvee on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 07:51 am:  Edit

Ben,

Consumer acceptance of irradiated meat is the key to success of SURE, and it's tough to find data on how it is selling. You might assume it is selling well because more and moe supermarkets are carrying it. It started with small markets and now the big boys are signing up. Would they devote precious shelf space to a loser product? I don't think so.

Some big future events for SURE include the use of irradiation instead of methyl-bromide (which by law will be discontinued) for imported fruit and vegetable dis-infestation, the approval of irradiation for ready-to-eat meats to eliminate the growing problem of the listeria bacteria, and the replacement of the term "irradiation" with "pasteurization" in labelling and marketing materials - this is in the final stage of gov approval.

BTW - Safeway signed up earlier this week. I'm just waiting for Mr. Jack to get on the tube touting pasteurized sure burgers.

By Ldvee on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 07:59 am:  Edit

Ben,

Another positive for SURE is the legal and insurance aspect. If a meat producer sells a tainted product, people get sick, some die, and the producer did not use an approved process that would have prevented the problem, is he liable? You betcha.

I forget the name, but last year a producer closed up shop because of lawsuits resulting from selling tainted meat. Those guys are running scared.

By Kendricks on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 08:31 am:  Edit

Well fuck me. BRCM is rallying back, but ZRAN took a dive after hours. It was at around 14, and now it's down to around 11. At least I sold the 12.5's, so only half of the drop hurts me. I'm going to hang tough on this one (unless it keeps falling), and wait for the 12.5's to expire. At least the rest of my trades are working out - with these two travesties, this month is about a wash. If ZRAN comes back and the rest of my stocks are assigned, it will still be a halfway decent month.
