How about those Green Bay Packers?

By Ben on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 06:38 am:  Edit

Money talks, bullshit walks.

I was in Hotel Pueblo Amigo Sunday morning for breakfast and to make some bets on the playoff teams. Amigo jocannon calls me from San Juan Capistrano saying he his driving fast but probably will be late and place a bet for him as follows: Tampa Bay and the under and Oakland and the under a four way parlay. $20=$220. He then did a two game parlay with the same teams $10=$38. He won both bets.

Sampson comes in (late) with several hundred dollars all bet on the under on both games plus other bets I don't remember. I think he won at least $700-$1,000.

I showed up at the agreed upon time, bet $70 and lost it all.

Is there a correlation between punctuality and poor predictive power?

By Jocannon on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 11:52 am:  Edit

No...

I just learned from past experiences...bet the opposite of whatever/whomever Ben bets.

By Dogster on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 09:32 pm:  Edit

There is a correlation between punctuality and poor pre-, during-, and post- dictive power. The graph wouldn't look pretty.

By Ben on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 07:12 am:  Edit

Hey Dogster,

Not bad for a "kindergarten" graph.

Lakers 8-2 and Philadelphia 2-8 over the last ten games.

You are a genius and I am sure deep down Superman is just jealous.

Now how about that birthday lunch?

By Dogster on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 09:17 am:  Edit

Much of the west is 8-2 and much of the east is 2-8, or at least it seems that way. Most of the East has been nosediving lately.

I think the Shaq-Yao first-time matchup of centers was a game for the ages.

I've read about the fanfare when Wilt first played Bill Russell--it was a much anticipated matchup that helped put the growing NBA on the national radar.

wj

And I remember the fanfare when Wilt first played Jabbar/Alcindor. That one was especially poignant, as loyalties in LA were highly mixed. Jabbar had just won 3 straight NCAA championships for UCLA, and was extremely popular in LA, the greatest college basketball player ever. Wilt, now almost 35, had yet to win a championship in LA, but was popular and well respected. Russell had retired the year Jabbar came to the NBA, preventing a matchup between those two greats.

wj

The Shaq-Yao game lived up to expectations. Both stars were gracious to each other, then competed fiercely during the game. Yao's three stunning blocked shots to begin the game left no question that he could play with Shaq, and that this was no ordinary matchup. At the same time, you could see that both players were aware that they had met a worthy rival, as in "I've never played against someone like this before."

If both players remain healthy over the years, this could become a great and memorable story. They have the potential to force each other to constantly improve.

At some point, the "honeymoon" between these two will be over, and they will be able to simply go at each other, without the risk of creating an international political crisis. That's when it really gets good.

The Queens was Robbed! The word is that the league is concerned that the Clipps might not come up for air and that it's necessary to throw them a few wins against good teams in order to keep them afloat. How else do you explain a team with the talent and depth of Sacramento going down to the Clippers? It's all a conspiracy I tell ya!

Scarus

By Erip on Sunday, January 19, 2003 - 03:32 pm:  Edit

No, the question is how a team with the talent and depth of the Clippers can lose so regularly. The Clippers may be pathetic in fact, but it isn't from any lack of talent. The difference between what we are seeing with the Clippers this year and them being a legit championship contender is nothing more than a competent head coach, a veteran leader on the court, and a front office that doesn't continually sqander the the potential of their young talent. Perhaps Steve Lavin will become their next coach...now that would be a classic Donald Sterling move.

Clippers btw are in no danger of financial extinction. They are in fact one of the more profitable teams in the NBA.

By Superman on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 11:20 pm:  Edit

Clippers problems are nothing new ... they've fielded college All-Star teams since at least the late 80's. They never win because the owner does not give a shit ... of course, their Dogster-sized inferiority complex regarding the Superteam they share the building with does not help matters either.

One of the best comebacks I have seen from the Celtics was yesterdays game !
Van Horn is not tuff enuff to be the 2nd or third shooter. He missed a wide open layup that cost them the game.
I shouldnt talk the Celtic's need a third scorer
:(

Go Celtics !!

By Superman on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 12:19 pm:  Edit

Milk,

You're right, that was quite a comeback. I watched the game til halftime and figured a 20 point lead was safe. I switched it back over just in time to see the Celtics celebration. Damn.

Van Horn is just another Toni Kukoc type ... to passive to be a star. Meek people suck.

Sixers have been ruined by GM Brown. The guy should just coach and leave the rest to guys who know what they are doing. 2 years ago, Philly had the best record in the NBA at the all-star break. Brown systematically destroyed that team with his trades.

Iverson has not been very good this year either. Maybe he does need practice. LOL.

In the end it will not matter, as the West will win the championship anyway (not the Lakers though).

NBA moves to a best of 7 first round ... it's about time. No more 1st round flukes like Denver over Seattle in '94 or NJ over Philly in '84.

Bad news for the Lakers ... they might have scared Dallas or Sac in a best of 5, but the chances of them winning 4 of 7 is slim. Too bad they took the first half of the season off.

Friday nite hoops featuring Iverson vs. T. Mac. Next at 7:30 PM Pacific Time Kobe vs. the Spurs. I dig Iverson's game and heart, but until they get Mr. Spreewell in that team I'm not given them a chance-even against the live or die by the trifecta B. Celtics. Kobe is due to cool down, but as much as he has been smoking teams in the last two weeks it will take a little bit longer for him to stop dropping bombs on any defense. Sixers over Magic and Lakers make it 8 in a row! Can't wait for Tuesday night to be here, but it's all about taking one game at a time.

By Ben on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 07:33 am:  Edit

Big test for Lakers tonight.

I think that if they win/dominate the Spurs tonight, it will go a long way mentally among all players (themselves and opponents) in making them a solid canidate as one of the top teams to win it all.

How are they Lakers doing?

Is that stupid Kobe person, who will never be an NBA star(as in overated), still on the Lakers team?

Is there any chance they will make the playoffs?

By Dogster on Wednesday, March 05, 2003 - 10:59 pm:  Edit

They'll never win a championship with that Kobe guy. And Shaq's a slacker. And the rest of the team is a bunch of scrubs. And Phil Jackson is just a lucky bum who they let coach these guys. When those guys win, it is because the refs are biased.

Sixers are looking awful tough.

I just watched the scintillating interview with Shaq after the horryble ending to the Indiana game. I just want to say that he is not emotionally disturbed.

By Ben on Thursday, March 06, 2003 - 07:42 am:  Edit

I watched that game last night and Lakers were very lucky to win. The ref's gave the Lakers to many calls, like the one that cancelled Kobe's shot at the end of the game.

Lakers 106, Sixers 92 ... pathetic performance by L.A.. They definitely need to tighten up and stop letting bad teams hang around till the fourth quarter before they blow them out.

In the end, the Lakers did a good job of bending that punk Iverson over the sink and brutally gang raping him, with large amounts of blood, lube and semen dripping out his anus.

As I (and nobody else here) have maintained all season, the Lakers remain the team to beat. If they remain healthy, they'll 4-peat, as predicted.

As this game demonstrates, the East is completely irrelevant. It is descending into coinf-flip mediocrity. As the Lakers' record since Christmans proves, all the Laker bashing this season has been much ado about nothing.

How does it feel to always be right. Your graphs are not only "superman" impressive, but perhaps a little bit to conservative. Wait, did I use conservative in describing you? Wash my mouth out with biodegradeble soap.

LOL. That must have been an agonizing 3 months, waiting for the Lakers to tie up the season series. Good job.

I'm hardly worried about losing the last game of a Western road trip that included the legit best team in the West (Sacramento).

Ben, you must have attended Berkeley graph school, cuz obviously you didn't understand Dogster's Drunken Graphs 101.

L.A. will be as irrelevant as the East come San Antonio and Sacramento ... maybe next year.

Gee Superman,

Agonizing? I didn't even know they were ahead or behind on the series. I guess you are referring to Sixers?

I was wondering what would get you to respond.

Sacramento and San Antonio are very impressive, but LA seems to be getting better each week.

I am sure Sacramento is going to be the favorite, but with those ref's always trying to help the Lakers, one just never knows.

Tonight's Lakers-Rockets matchup was a game for the ages, full of excitement and last-minute drama. Unfortunately, I was stuck listening to the ESPN crew of Walton and some monotone announcer. Can't remember the dude's name. As both teams perfomed phenomenally, the announcers seemed emotionless and colorless. Am I the only one who noticed how boring they were?

LOL!!! "S", I am touched. Sounds like you've been obsessing miserably and irritably over that one for awhile, which means I hit the target perfectly. Again.

This is even better than when you were grousing childishly a month or two ago about WHY the Sixers had crashed. So deep. Not that it matters, but no team from the east has a chance of winning the NBA championship this year.

Anyway, THIS IS A MOMENTOUS DAY.

It has been exactly a year (April 1, 2002) since I first posted on the NBA thread, in hopes of fishing out angry pig-stupid narcissistic sports morons. My April Fools Day Fool-Detection project yielded “Superman”, who has given me a full year of entertainment. Trust me, this dude’s cro-magnon thinking style and aggressive ignorance have caused me to laugh heartily and continuously throughout the year.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE pro basketball. But S’s tirades have contributed excellent Jerry-Springer-grade dysfunctional entertainment.

Don’t change.

GO LAKERS!

Damn, that was not even a good try at rationalizing your stupidity. I expected better. Your cartoon graph was immediately dismissed ... only senile Ben gave it cred, probably cuz he's working on his last 10 years of existence. Anyhoo, I don't really hold you responsible for that one ... alcoholism brought on my your miserable failure as a man is to blame.

You're right for once ... the East has about as much chance of winning the title as the Lakers. Graph 2-7 against San Antonio, Dallas and Sacramento for me.

One full year of being my bitch? Sweet! Thoughtful too, remembering the anniversary! How's a thoughtful guy like yourself not hooked up? Never met the right girl ... or maybe you let her get away?

Feel the power.
