Iverson is pound for pound, inch for inch the best player in the game today. Unfortunately, his size is his greatest detriment. There is only so much you can do at < 6'.

Watching Philly reminds me of the Bulls pre-Pippen ... they went as far as Jordan could take them, and while it was never far enough, they were exciting to watch.

If someone like Shaq had the heart of Iverson, he'd be in the running with Wilt for greatest player of all time ... but where Wilt took advantage and dominated (far superior opposition, of course) in a way that will never be equalled, Shaq does just enough against a bunch of guys who would have never made it past I-AA in Wilt's day. It's a shame really. I wish he'd just go balls out for one full season to see what he could really do.

Gotta give props to KG and Hudson this evening. The TW's are such cool team, it is a shame that they'll have to be devoured by the big dogs shortly.

I'll be at the Lakers' feeding frenzy on Thursday, and possibly Sunday. The 3-time defending champions will flatten the Timberwoofs in both games, most likely.

Fortunately for the state of Minnesota, they've already won 4 NBA championships. So it won't be as painful as watching the Vikes go down.

By Snapper on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 - 12:07 am:  Edit

The state of Minnesota will be busy watching the Wild move on to the Stanley Cup. Today was a great day for Minnesota sports fans.

I like the wolves and I am a huge KG fan. Hudson gamed it up but don't count on that too many more times. 4-1 lakes. But I wanted to give credit to the wolves, they played great.

Jeeeezzz, Golly, Didya see then Timberwolves? Geewizzz!

ANALysis:

As mentioned previously, I will attend the ceremonial anal evisceration of the Timberwoofs this evening at Staples Center. Because I will be hobnobbing with the other celebrities in LA over the weekend, please allow me to send my condolences to Minnesota fans in advance of this most distasteful yet enjoyable event.

Game two was the perfect motivational event for our heros, the three time defending world champions. In fact, during their 3 year (and counting) dynasty, they have lost 7 playoff games by more than 28 points.

If you are new to playoff basketball, or if you are one of those longstanding NBA fans/neurotics who just doesn't get it... then it is helpful to realize that all Great Champions (like the current Lakers, or for that matter the '80s Lakers and Celtics, or the '50s/'60s Celtics, or the '90s Bulls) tend to have occasional stone cold games en route to winning their rings. Teams occasionally romp all the way through the playoffs, but that is not the preference... Adversity is rocket fuel for true champions.

Champs down, but hardly out...look for Lakers to take it in 6!

By T_bone on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 01:13 am:  Edit

I was not too suprised by the T-Wolves/lakers game except when Minnesota lost the 10+ point lead in the 4th Q (I thought they would walk on the lakers like they did in game #2). I was suprised when Garnett was called with a ticky-tack/flop foul very early into overtime that they were able to hang on though. Minnesota even held on after Wally was called for a foul without touching some scurb on a lay-up.

I still think la could win the series if they went down low to Shaq almost every time down the court (too bad he doesn't have 1/10 of KG's or 1/2 of Kobe's heart and intensity).

Shaq is the 1A player on the court (only because of physical dominance), KG is a close 1B, Kobe is #3, Wally is #4 and then I think I would go Hudson, AP, Nesto, Horry (he would be higher - maybe # 5 a year ago but he's lost it), Marc Jackson, D. George, Strickland, a bunch of other guys then Fisher rounding out the bottom.

The Wolves have way more talent, home court, and momentum.

What a BIG win for the T-Wolves in LA last night, and hey, Phil Jackson, "fetch"-you...

wow, going into the fourth quarter, lakers down 74-71.. lakers are looking to get back in this series. kings got basically robbed in utah last night, as the jazz got to the free throw line twice as many times..

By Happyboy on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 03:12 pm:  Edit

jeez, what a fucking CHOKE job by the twolves in the last 7 minutes, KG missed two free throws in the final minute.. its tied up at 2-2... KG was talking trash before the game, saying if the wolves go up 3-1 the series is over.. 1 game at a time, KG..

By Superman on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 04:45 pm:  Edit

I don't know why everyone is getting worked up about this series ... neither team is going to win the title, so it's irrelevant.

Anyone who is too much of a "homer" to see the reasons the Lakers are not the best team in basketball are only getting another dose of reality.

Finally made it to some Lakers games this season...

Staples Center as always was an advertising exec's wet dream, with sales pitches flashing everywhere, including the Laker Girls' chests. The crowd always seems to lose its charge during station breaks, as it did last year, thanks to mismanagement of the video/Laker Girl circus during timeouts. There's more of an empahsis on putting up movie clips and getting fan shots than actually keeping the crowd in the game. At least it is a little more highbrow than mind-numbing cowbells...

The Twolves were very impressive in last Thursday's overtime win, especially their defense, what with their full court press and anticipation of Laker passing. The Lakers includng Kobe were actually finally using the Triangle offense on most plays, and the Twolves actually managed to break it down. Since then, the Lakers have made the appropriate adjustments and are not likely to hit too many more snags before concluding this series.

It was a real shame to lose Fox, but the team has enough depth to cover that loss. I'll be there Thursday to witness the likely end of the series...

By Superman on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 - 11:56 pm:  Edit

I would enjoy that series ... Philly has a shot, especially since Detroit & Indiana are in trouble. Both those teams were a bad matchup for Philly. McGrady and Orlando are playing good ball though. I'm not holding my breath ...

The Lakers have no depth after 1 and 1A. The Kings have depth. Homer fans are so funny, blinded by their own ignorance. You can't really blame them I guess ... but they sure come off as dumb. Maybe it was a subtle joke that's over my ignorant head. Or sarcasm. Or Dead Man Ale.

It's obvious even die hard Laker fans realize they need a ton of luck to get to the finals this year ... unless you subscribe to Erip's freaky spirits theory. Pray, pray, pray for a Phoenix upset of the Spurs. If LA can't handle Garnett, and Duncan is better than KG, and the Spurs are better than the Wolves ...

Where are all the Laker flags this year? They must not come out until the finals. Socal sports fans rule.

Lakers stepping up to the plate and taking care of business...wow! Let's do it again on Thursday and 12 more times to get to the promise land! Some losers fall in love with hating success and I know deep down inside of you there is this little failure that wishes you had .003% of heart, smarts, and talent this Laker team has. Too bad frustrated chumps!

Kings reach the second round, taking care of the jazz, 4-1, big props to NBA sixth man bobby jackson, and a big standing ovation for Stockton and Malone when they left the game.. Mavs should have taken care of business with the blazers, now Portland has some life, down 3-2, going back home..

Exactly. Well put. Rumor has it that this sort of thing really eats at that guy. Kinda pathetic, but also entertaining.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow nights' Lakers game. Being an adult, I enjoy the games no matter how they turn out. The fact that the Lakers are a dynasty that makes all the other teams a footnote is frosting on the cake. I won't be sitting in the courtside folding chairs this time, but they'll be great seats. Lotsa great scenery there, I must say.

By Jarocho on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 04:32 am:  Edit

Courtside? I'm with about enjoying good competition, so I'll be couchside tomorrow hoping the Lakers can put the final dagger into the T-Wolves' heart...how cruel and exciting that will feel!

Yeah, I smell death for my T-wolves.
Even worse, I smell death for my Wild.

I am really impressed with the Wild who have the lowest payroll in the league. It is the first time that I have seen them play. Canucks are not that good but Ducks win the west, Anaheim titletown USA. I even like the Wild logo now.
So Lakers play Spurs next round? Lakers-Kings will be a great final. East plays CBA ball.

I admit I am full of hatred, but don't I have a right to be bitter? My teams never win anything ... it's not fair! The Cowboys have not won anything in my lifetime, the Yankees never win the World Series, Ferrari hasn't won 4 straight F1 championships, the UConn men's hoops team never won it all, my college football team never won a national championship or 12 ... jeez, I'm such a frustrated sports fan! Okay, the Sixers are bringing up the rear, but they'll get theirs.

It's called sports, losers. You root for a team to win, and root for a team to lose ... it's been going on for years. The only scary-obsessive "fans" are the gamblers and the nerds whose entire identity is defined by the success or failure of their team ...

Jarocho, if you think Bitchster is sitting courtside at the lakers game, I've got a bridge to sell ya. I hear he drove to the game in his F355, took his Star Trek fantasy Jeri Ryan as his date, partied at Sky after the game, kicked Jean Claude Van Dam's ass in a bar fight, and then had a threesome with his X-Men fantasy Halle Berry and that ugly chick from the Matrix. Errr, at least that's the way it looks from the bottom of his 8th can of beer ....

Spurs win ... barely. Damn, the Suns had their number for sure. Hard to believe that team won't be real good real soon. Stoudamire is a stud, and Marbury is finally growing up.

Speaking of growing up, what's the deal with Ron Artest? Craaaaaaazzyyyy. Charles Barkley had me rolling when he asked "Do crazy people know their crazy?" Too funny. Hey Dogster, do losers know they're losers?

Kings/Dallas will be a tough series ... hopefully we'll get a conference finals rematch of LA Vs. Sactown ... it does not get any better than that. Dallas and San Antonio may spoil the party though.

Sixers choked in their closeout game, now Nawlins is getting healthy ... ahh, why make it easy?

Unfortanely, there are still losers out there who use sports to bring the loser in them. I still admire success whether it is Milkman with chicas or the Lakers winning championship. If that's a problem so anyone, it just too damn bad!

By Scarus on Friday, May 02, 2003 - 12:06 pm:  Edit

I wouldn't be so quick to discount Dogster's "courtside" comment. My boss buys individual tickets to select Laker games, and every playoff game through a ticket broker. He usually pays about $300-$500 per ticket, more for any game 7s. He did in fact have a courtside seat for one of the big regular season games. Dogster, in fact, said that he "doesn't" have courtside seats for this game, but if he does have a good seat, and he is sitting next to a fat, ugly, obnoxious, guy from Philly, (with bad hair implants), then he's probably sitting next to my boss, and I wouldn't find that so unbelievable....

I too am yearning for a Lakers/Queens rematch. My hope is that if such a rematch takes place and the Queens lose, as usual, then any diehard Sac fans still on the loose will be man enough not to whine about it for the rest of the year, (unlike past years). I, for one, solemnly promise to give credit where credit is due, regardless of whatever undeserving team might slip by the one and only true Back to Back to Back, NBA Champion, Lakers.

By Dogster on Friday, May 02, 2003 - 06:35 pm:  Edit

For last night's playoff game, tickets ran me $130 apiece for seats about 20 rows up from corner between the basket and the Lakers' bench (section 117 to be precise, next to the tunnel). That is probably considerably lower than the price on the open market, and includes access to the Arena Club (restaurant/bar/sushi bar, etc) adjacent to the luxury boxes, etc.

The whole thing is not cheap, obviously, but well worth it if you love championship dynasty basketball. After all, Lakers championships are a rare event. They only happen about once a year or so. The scene at Staples is pure L.A., a little too status-driven and pretentious, but lots of fun.

There was, in fact, a fat obnoxious guy a few rows away, and he may very well have been from the obnoxious Philly region of the country.

Driving home to San Diego last night was lots of fun, plenty of celebration. Once we got out of LA, we stopped in some shithole town called Costa Mesa to fertilize the local ecosystem. And then, back on the freeway to civilization...

The Lakers-Spurs series should be fun. I hope I get good seats...

By Superman on Saturday, May 03, 2003 - 03:58 pm:  Edit

Scarus, it's not an Exploder-type dismissal ... it's based on observation. Those who tend to live in fantasyland tend to make shit up. Make up too much shit and nobody believes what you say.

Mavericks are the choke kings. If they lose tomorrow, they go down in history as the greatest chokers of all time. Of course, I give all credit to the great and legendary Mo Cheeks. The NBA looks like a bunch of geniuses by extending the 1st round to best of 7.

My oh-so-bold prediction: Spurs over Lakers in 6.

I don't know who I want Philly to play in round two ... the Magic are hot but they are a one man show ... Detroit presents Philly with serious matchup problems. I guess I'll pull for McGrady Vs. Iverson for the entertainment value.

i see spurs are -2 in game one and +150 for the series. interesting that if the spurs continue to be an underdog at san antonio that you could get plus points with the series favorite 4 times out of seven.

have to think that there is good value in the spurs +150 in this series. sure it wouldn't be front page news if they "upset the lakers", but i still percieve value here. i sure as shit can't find value in laying a buck seventy on the lakers.

i think this series is for the nba championship as i don't see sac or dallas threatening either team here when the chips are on the table.

Jarocho, tell me how your mind goes from me talking about hoops/having fun with Dogster to kicking your or anyone else's ass? I'm curious how you put all that together. Careful how you answer, cuz you might become a more interesting psychological study than even Dogster.

Now, as to how much I care how you or anyone else perceives me, I'll tell you the same thing I've always said ... I'm 8 letters to you. I am not, nor have I ever been, interested in building personal relationships with a bunch of middle aged whore mongers. I never want to meet you, talk to you, hang out with you or beat your ass.

You in particular are a mildly amusing 7 letters to me, nowhere in the same league as my favorite posters Dogster (unintentional comedy/glutton for punishment/clueless stiff), Milkman (intentional comedy), Erip (information), and Ben (my hero). There are other amusing collections of consonants & vowels, but those are my current favorites.

I am anxiously waiting for tonight's Lakers/Spurs series to start. The local paper is playing up the David Robinson angle. I'm sure he would like to end his career on a high note but at this point I don't see him as anything more than a speed bump on the way to Shaq's complete domination of the Spurs. Sure, Duncan is unstoppable, but the Spurs are going to need more, much more, to beat the Lakers. I also think their guards are going to be taken to school by Kobe & Fisher.

Could come down to who is more aggressive on defense and which team is hitting their open shots.

Duncan is a worthy MVP this year.

Oh come on Dogster, Por Favor!!

Taking the high road is not acceptable on the Pro Basketball section of this board.

Bad officiating screwed the Lakers and the whole Spurs team must have spent the summer in Sacramento, CA going to the "Vlade Divac School of the Flop"

Plus, plus the Lakers lost two of their star players in Rick Fox and Devean George.

I couldn't believe how calm Shaq was when he received three unjust calls in the fourth quarter and oh yeah, that poor Robert Horry who was just trying to help that little puss boy David Robinson from falling to the floor and accidentally grabbed his dick.

Did I leave anything out like Kobe maybe shooting like crap or the Spur's great defense, which was obviously having just another lucky night?
