There is enough information on this website to go to Rio and feel comfortable about what you are doing if you take the time to research and take the appropriate information along.

However, if it is your first trip, and you don't speak Portuguese, and you're going alone..... and in my case had never even heard of this website until three weeks before I left, it is a smart move to hire someone to show you around initially, even if it is just for a day. Whether it is for a week or a day, the benefits gained will pay for at least half the expense. Once you get your bearings, you'll be fine.

I was just pointing out that whatever good advice you may have, it gets lost in all of the not-so-subtle insults and cheap potshots. However, you need to get your facts straight. Don costs $225 for a week. That works out to roughly $33 a day with a $5 a day cell phone included in that $33. If you don't want to pay the whole week, you don't have to. If he meets you at noon and shows you around until midnight (if you want), he's making $33 - $5 = $28 divided by 12 hours, or $2.33 an hour.

Futhermore, he does not have 10 guys a week paying him that. He had exactly... me... paying him for my first week. He didn't have anybody the second week I was there. I think he would be happy to hear that he is making $120,000 a year according to you though. I and others never said everyone should hire Don. If you go up a few posts and read again, I think there are special circumstances where it is a prudent decision…. and no it doesn’t make you a pussy or make you look like a dumbass American. The reason people get “flamed”, as you say, everytime they say something bad about guides is that they generally don’t know what they are talking about.
