While this thread has never remotely gotten onto the topic of what the guides really do (setting up apartments, sitting at the fucking airport waiting on a late-arriving plane, etc etc) and has seemed to focus on what they don't do (pimping and scamming), I can say that for every experienced mongerer and/or world traveler I've run into, anywhere in the world, I have run into a greater number of guys who absolutely should have had someone showing them the ropes.

Now, there are many ways to learn your way around. The best way is the way I learned, The Mentor. A friend, someone you work with, whatever, who has already been to where you're going and shows you all you need to know. The second best way is research - Internet, books, whatever. The third best way is to use a guide - a paid mentor, basically. The worst way is what I see very often, be it Mexico, Brasil, Germany, Korea, Thailand, etc etc - some guy who steps out of his hotel with a big S for sucker on his forhead who roams around looking for fun.

Using a guide is like using a tax accountant, lawyer or just about anyone else in the service industry. Sure, you can be like a lot of us and spend 20 hours reading trip reports and six months worth of threads on every topic under Brasil, go down and have a great time. Or, you can learn that for $250, you don't have to spend 20 hours and can just get on a plane and when you land, all is taken care of. Both are excellent ways to go. You either spend the money for a guide, which, by the way, you would only need to use for one trip, or you can spend time (which is money) doing the research. It's that simple, folks.

Now, as far as guides as pimps, and GringoConLeche being the anti-christ for creating, marketing and selling pornography: Don and the guys are not pimps and to the best of my knowledge (having met Don, drank with him and NOT having used his services) do not run their own stables of girls. Don makes it a point to say that he doesn't do any of the girls in the termas just to avoid the usual soap opera of jealous emotions of one girl getting pissed about not getting business, etc. Now, I'm sure he's stretching the truth a bit there, but on the surface it's a good policy on his part.

Its a shame more guys are so afraid to speak out on this matter, and I like the fact some of you have e-mail me and say how much you guys respect me for speaking out on this issue, but I wish some of you would speak out on this thread so it doesn't look like I am the only one that see this clown for what he is.

I don't have a problem standing alone I have always been the type of person that spoke out when something needs to be said, that just the way I was raise and I am a better man for that I can look myself in the mirror each and everyday and love what I see.

I just returned a few hours ago from 10 days in
Beautiful Rio. I hung with Don and Karl and can assure you these guys are both 1st class guys. In addition to hanging with them I also had the time of my life with many Hombre Amigos from this board. Yes these guys are Mongers but some of the classiest guys in the country. Don's services are priceless: Airport pickup - Hotel/Apartment recommendations - Cell phone - Translation - Watching your bills so you don't get ripped off - knows the most beautiful Garota's in the city - FRIENDSHIP. I have used his services twice now and will continue to in the future regardless of how many times I go to Rio. There are no kick backs from the Termas or the girls. His REPUTATION is impeccable. Quite honestly I don't think he charges enough for his services. IMHO I feel the bashers are guys who never even met him. If this man ever did you wrong then BASH on, but if you don't have anything good to say then why don't you all just shut the fuck up. Hemp, you bastard, stop calling KC names. Thank goodness KC is not bothered by your petty personal attacks (from KC's first post on this thread--"I for one NEVER gave a damn what anyone has to say about me..."). So Hemp, you degenerate bastard, go ahead and name call. It will get you NOWHERE!!!

I must take exception to those who post that it would be okay if guides got kickbacks from the termas. When one pays a guide he is paying for a certain loyalty, i.e., he expects the guide to provide services to HIM and bring him what in the guide's opinion are the best locations for him. He is not paying the guide good money to bring him to the locations most apt to give the guide kickbacks. If a guide is doing that without disclosing this it is IMHO objectionable.

Is it more objectionable than a doctor who chooses which drugs to give you based on which drug manufacturer give him the best perks? Or, is it more objectionable than a non-monger tour operator who brings his customers shopping only to stores that give him commissions, foregoing better stores with better deals? Probably not. All of this is highly objectionable, and bottom line dishonest unless disclosed.

Don seems to recognize this, his post states that taking kickbacks from termas would give the appearance of a "conflict of interest." What I find puzzling though, is that he also seems to say that on some unspecified percentage of visits to termas, he has, in fact, accepted kickbacks:
"I've known of commissions paid by many of the termas but have IN MOST INSTANCES refused so as not to appear to have a conflict of interest." (capitalization added.)

LAGUY, he is talking about the fact that termas pay commissions. T65 offers it, as does Centaurus, and I think 4x4 pays taxi drivers too.

My feelings are hurt because KC has so far refused to attack me. I object to the discrimination and demand that he immediately begin fabricating facts about me as he has about GCL and Don. There is absolutely no excuse for his failure to post that my conduct is as illegal, immoral and fraudulent as theirs. What do I have to do around here to get a little parity?

I just wanted to let everyone know that a member of this board and a person who disagrees with me on my discussions here choose to copy discussions where I was mentioned, as well as other information from trip reports and sent them to my wife, and employees of mine at my company.

It saddens me that someone would stoop to such lengths as this in an attempt to harm my life--with total disregard for the potential harm it can cause persons and their families. Do not think any of you are immune. Fortunately they were not successful in harming me, although it did cause my wife a great deal of grief until I could put it in context and explain the situation to her. My situation is somewhat different from most of you, so if it had been someone else it may have caused quite a lot of problems I am sure.

Having said that, it was fairly easy to identify the culprit, and I have been informed their membership on this board has been revoked--as it should be.

Debate and lively discussion I enjoy. I certainly do not mind persons disagreeing with me. I even find the far fetched claims and lies to be fun to read. But again, I think it is a very cowardly thing for someone to sneak around, copy information and attempt to send it anonymously.

I do not intend to stop posting on this board. To all my friends, thanks for your support. To all those who disagree with me, happy mongering. And to the coward who called himself SpyinRio, he will go the way of RioRat, Bill in Chicago and Godfather's stalker--they should join their own club.

Just to clarify, we've removed the offending account without identifying it to anyone.

These kinds of actions sadden myself and my assistant as well. We really want to continue providing as much freedom as possible in posting, but situations that come to the point of what happened to GCL above are completely unacceptable, and they threaten the permissiveness we've allowed in posting.

This is a complicated and thorough discussion, and it can be made without going after individuals for expressing their opinion. Please make your points without insulting other members for their stance on this issue.
