Man,

What is the deal with Oklahoma State? Second year in a row that they upset my Oklahoma team. They not only upset them, they kicked their butts.

Oh well, "Wait until next year".

Now if Georgia takes care of business vs Ark. AND VCU whoops up on those cocky bastard Canes....the Dawgs could sneak into to Fiesta Bowl against the overrated Buckeyes (no offense intended Ezeamante)

Miami gets on my nerves too. The truth is, they are as good as they want to be....hopefully come Saturday they will not want to be very good!

Boomer Sooner,

Oklahoma kicked ass in the Rose Bowel. Their defense as usually looked great.

Bob Stoops is 10-1 against top ten rated teams. If only he could have beaten the lower rated teams this year. I take that back as then Oklahoma would have had to play Miami.

Maybe the second best team in the country.

In case anyone was wondering, I am going to let you in on the fact that Ohio State will not defeat Miami this evening...

Southern Cal could beat Miami-- OU could beat Miami as well-- but the Buckeyes-- inferior to the Canes at every position-- will not defeat Miami...

By Ben on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 02:12 pm:  Edit

YB,

I agree that OU and USC are perhaps better than OSU, but the fact remains that Miami is a cut above all the rest.

OU could not beat Miami 8 out of 10 times and that is perhaps giving OU to much credit.

Miami would shut down Oklahoma's average offense and Oklahoma's defense would be worn out by the middle of the third quarter ie. See Iowa against USC

SOCAL looked great against Iowa and Carson Palmer looked as if he deserved to win the Heisman Trophy, but again USC is not a match for Miami on most days.

I am glad OU did not go undefeated and be bullied in the Fiesta bowel by perhaps one of the greatest overall teams in the history of college football.

By Ezy on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 04:01 pm:  Edit

I would add Georgia to your list of top-of-the-second-tier schools, one notch below Miami....

too bad the bowls don't want a true playoff...like every other NCAA sport and at every other level of college football (IA, II and NAIA).

Maybe one of the greatest college football games I have ever watched.

I was fairly neutral about the game until I heard that some of the Miami players had sent out invitation to a victory party, the day before the game. That overconfidence made me think that perhaps OSU might really get up for the game and Miami was taking a lot for granted. Probably didn't have as much to do with the game as the pass interference call at the end of the fourth quarter.

Ezemante OSU is the real deal and be careful as I will leave teeth marks

By Youngbrig on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 09:56 am:  Edit

Guys, I always give credit where credit is due; by stopping the Canes 4 times inside of the 5 to seal the win in OT-- and converting offensively on 2 4th down plays when they had to have it-- I can and will say that the Buckeyes made the plays they needed to in order to win the game...

On the other hand:

Item: Miami outgains the Buckeyes by 100 yards...

Item: Craig Krenzel 7-21 for 122 yards passing...

Item: In reality, the pass interference penalty was a "touch" call-- the flag should have never been thrown in that situation...Let the DB play defense for Godssakes...

In any event, congrats to the Ohio State Buckeyes...

By Ezy on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 11:29 am:  Edit

EZEAMANTE. No excuses from me. Congrats. Great game. Well deserved win.

Unlike Young Brig, I thought the ref was right to throw the flag although I would have called it for holding at the line of scrimmage rather than pass interference. It should be noted that a similar call went against OSU and in favor of Miami in the second OT. The difference was Miami failed to take advantage of the situation and OSU did.......

By Blazers on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 01:24 pm:  Edit

After watching the game, I have two points to make:

1. USC is better than both OSU and Miami and would have crushed them in a national championship game. I hate USC but let's be honest.

2. OSU was the most fortunate team I have ever watched in any national champion ship game. The quarterback completed 33% of his passes, the running back ran for 2 yards a carry and they WON. WHy? 5 lucky turnovers..actualy one of the interceptions was pure skill AND the worst call in the history of college football. The referee nearest to the ball did not throw a flag because their was NO PI. Only obvious PI's should be called when the biggest game of the year is on the line.

Remember Buckeye fans, you ARE NOT national champions, you only won the Fiesta Bowl. Several other teams would ruin you in a neutral turf game.

By Superman on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 03:44 pm:  Edit

I must have seen a different game ... it was sloppy with 7 turnovers, key penalties and poor execution. It was "great" if you only saw the last 2 minutes and OT I guess. It was very entertaining though. Like the Rams against NE in last year's Super Bowl, I bet Miami would win 9 of 10 games agains OSU.

Miami did not deserve to win with the 5 turnovers, but they got robbed on the pass interference. The ref signals incomplete pass, sends the team into euphoria and then lobs a late flag. The last thing in the world you want to see is a closeup on a ref wearing thick, coke bottle eyeglasses ... this guy has a history too, as ESPN reported "In the last two years, the Big 12 has issued at least two known letters of apology after games where Porter has made controversial calls." Think they'll issue another one? Ha.

This game should spur the NCAA idiots to institute a playoff and replay system. Miami loses on a horrible call, and neither team in the championship game was the best in college football. How great would even a four game playoff had been ... my money would be on USC, who was clearly playing the best football at year end, but gets penalized for a slow start. NCAA Div I is the only men's or women's sport without a playoff system.

OSU defense was amazing. I guess no surprise, but I was surprised.

A lot of drama with several fourth down plays and two undefeated teams.

A field goal to get it into overtime.

I think it will be a game mentioned for years.

I also agree that Miami would probably win more times than OSU and most would agree, but bottom line OSU did it.

Miami had a great come back in the second half.

I could go on and on as to why I loved that game.

By Allover on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 11:54 am:  Edit

It was a great game to watch but I think both teams showed they did not belong there. The Sooners (and Trojans)would have beat either of them. The game was poorly played and those turnovers weren't all forced by the OSU defense. On one of them it looked like the Miami receiver handed the OSU guy the ball after a pass recption. Fortunately for Miami they have too much talent to let Coker lead them down the path to failure ala Frank Solich. Ben, do you remember when Gary Gibbs fired Larry Coker as OU's off. coordinator? The NC game was good because one team had to win. Neither team played well enough to win but someone had to. At least OU's 47 game streak remains #1.

When I was a kid in grade school and junior high school my dad use to take me to some of those games at Norman, Oklahoma. I played in a football league in grade school and junior high(pre Pop Warner). I always pretended I was Tommy McDonald.

While in college at OU Bud Wilkinson was the coach my freshman and I think sophomore year. I use to work in the grocercy store where he would sometimes come in to shop. Very nice and quiet man who never acted self important or officious. I was in absolute awe.

I guess the point i am trying to make is i am glad Oklahoma's streak is alive and well.

I still think the Miani team is a great team and I wonder how many players will be drafted by the NFL. Obviously McGahee(sp?) will not be drafted.

:) :) :)

I just love sparking a good debate.

Blazers: I beg to differ, I've read several newspapers, checked all the online resources, and contrary to your opinion, the Buckeyes ARE national champions.

I will say that the OU and USC are two solid teams. If only they had earned their way into the championship game by winning all their regular season games, we wouldn't have to speculate.

To all the ESPN "experts" who were so down on the Big Ten. Hmmm, best conference record in the bowl season...nuff said.

:) I love the fact that everyone hates the way OSU wins, but the fact remains, they played well enough to win every game they played.

Want to talk about bad or no calls? How many no calls were made on obvious holding penalties...mucho.

Lee Corso quote "Miami had better athletes, Ohio State had the better team"

I saw that in the paper today regarding MaGahee having insurance.

I was wondering about if he had insurance when he left the game. Pretty common among pro type college players these days to get insurance.

I wonder if the University or an alum is allowed to pay the cost as many/most of these kids could not afford the premium on that type of insurance.

Snapping the Miami streak was important because they usually play a soft schedule and they have possibly gone undefeated nextr season. Ben, I'm from the Switzer era so I'm used to winning big games at OU. I had my pic taken with Switzer at the rose Bowl.

By Ben on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 07:32 am:  Edit

I was gone when Switzer became head coach, butI am pretty sure he was an assitant coach under a guy by the name of Mckenzie(died of a heart attack his second year) who took over in the mid sixties.

I bought a home in Norman and sold life insurance for a couple of years in Oklahoma to college students (just what they needed).

Fairbanks took over for Mckenzie while i still lived there and I had season tickets. When he left for The pros or Colorado (I don't remember where he went first) then Switzer came into power.

What a great coach Switzer, but had many issues with cheerleaders and other coaches wives. Also had a quarterback that was a drug dealer. Even Switzer couldn't over come all of that stuff.

Alums and administration demanded a higher level of ethics and scholastics and of course the football program went down the tubes for the next ten years.

By Allover on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 10:51 pm:  Edit

I was there Fairbank's last year and into the start of the Switzer era. I didn't know about Switzer's relationship with cheerleaders but I heard the story about him being in a hot tub with Coach Larry Lacewell's wife. The story is legendary but probably untrue since Lacewell was with the Cowboys when The King coached for the Cowboys. Supposedly they got along well in Dallas. But then again maybe Lacewell's wife was a bitch and he didn't mind Switzer banging her. Jimmy Johnson was on Switzer's staff in Norman. I wonder if Switzer is a Club Hombre member?

By Ben on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 07:25 am:  Edit

I didn't know Johnson was on Switzer's staff. I remember when JJ coached at Oklahoma State, pre Miami, and Switzer beat him every year. I know JJ and Switzer both played college ball at Arkansas along with Jerry Jones, but was under the impression that JJ and Switzer didn't get along.

By the way, Lacewell left Oklahoma after Switzer introduced Lacewell's wife to the "big fella". They did get back together at Dallas. Apparently no HARD feelings.

Re: Washington at Ohio State, has anyone seen a line posted yet?...In any event, Ohio State probably goes off at -13 or -14 but my advice before playing the Buckeyes would be to take a hard look at Husky QB Pickett and then think just as hard about Keith Gilbertsons relationship to the UW program over the years...Is there any more natural choice for a coach in Seattle?-- outside of Don James, of course...

For the record, I liked Rick Neuheisal and all, but...

If nothing else, Gilby will not outright abandon the run-game, and thus a balanced Husky offense will keep a distracted-- and Clarett-less-- OSU offense off of the field...

Bottom line: the Dawgs crush the fly this time after literally giving away the season-opener in the Big House in Ann Arbor last year...It will be close, of course, but the U-Dub wins outright...

Obviously, Washington did not get the job done...They actually spent the entire fetching fourth quarter on OSU's motherfetching ten yard line but couldn't convert anything...I felt the defense played well enough to win...

SC was impressive in humbling Auburn over there in the deep South...Also, expecting Oklahoma St. to simply stretch its legs in Lincoln and walk away with a win was a simple case of naivete...

Hey Youngbrig,

How are you? I just found this section by accident. I usually go straight into the TJ section but today hit the 1 day search and saw the College Football topic and got really excited.

I had the same two losses you did (OkState&UofW).

I was skeptical of both bets as I thought the line was a little high which mean the books were shading that side and that the side I am usually on. And if I don't agree with their shading I usually stay on the sideline but because of the first week I lost focus and just couldn't resist the tempting numbers.

Okie State problem was that they went straight down on the opening drive and score a touchdown. Then Josh Fields got arrogant and made some throws that he shouldn't.

The other thing was a defensive TD by nebraska and a turnover deep inside Okie State territory set up the second TD. Otherwise the Nebraska offense didn't do jack. That was a tough non-covered.

You pretty much summed up UofW situation.

I had a big Pac Ten parlay also. (USC, Cal, Oregon and UofW). Should've hedge Washington but was too busy with the Fiesta and by halftime the score was out of hand and didn't want to get middle.

Anyway, I give you a little bio on myself and see if wanna talk handicapping with me.

From '94 to '01 I made over 400 trips to Vegas betting all the major sports. College and NFL are my bread and butter.

Since then I have been betting online. Now that I have discovered the Zona. I will be in Caliente more often.

I know it from a Fan and Gambler point of view.

Take care, silver

I mentioned this previouly, but ther is a very nice little Caliente inside the Hotel Pueblo Amigo and a large Caliente about 1/2 block away from the hotel.
