Hey Youngbrig,
Yes! Gambling overall is a losing proposition for 99% of the general public. College football would fall along those lines.
Although you don't bet anymore. I would still like to get your opinion on any college games you might have a feeling on. Just for conversational purposes.
I normally don't start a conversation but when I see something of interest. I will give my 2 cents worth.
Take care, silver

Wisconsin was ranked #15 before today's embarrassing(23-5) loss to UNLV. I don't know collage too well, but am I right in assuming that they are no longer ranked?
By Pirate on Saturday, September 13, 2003 - 04:45 pm: Edit |
Snapper,
new rankings won't be out for a day or so. It is fair to say Wisconson won't be the number 15 team any longer....Neither will Texas be in the top 10....Auburn was clearly overrated and dropped into obscurity after consecutive losses....
Ohio State looks overranked but continues to hold on by eeking out wins....
USC, OU MIAMI...all appear to be the class of this year's college fb crop...

I have been partying all night celebrating So Cal's upset. I hate the trojans and love the real USC(University of South Carolina) who should have beaten #8 Tennessee.
I am also a Bruin fan.

Fetching Miami, they pick up a 4th and 13 with under 2 minutes and are able to get the game-winning field goal against powerhouse West Virginia (cough-cough)...
This has got to end at some point, right?...

After former Texas coach, Darrell Royal passes away and enters the pearly gates, St. Peter takes him on a tour. He shows Darrell a little 2-bedroom house with a faded University of Texas banner hanging on the front porch. 'This is your home, Coach Royal. Most people don't get their own house up here,' St. Peter explains.
Darrell looks at the house, then turns around and looks at the one sitting on the top of the hill. It's a huge 2-story mansion with white marble columns and little patios under the windows. OU flags line both sides of the sidewalk with a huge red and white big red banner hanging between the marble columns.
'Thanks for the home, St. Peter, but let me ask you a question. How come I get this little 2-bedroom house with a faded University of Texas banner, and former OU Coach Bud Wilkinson gets a mansion with new OU banners, and flags and a loud speaker playing 'Boomer Sooner'? Why is that?"
St. Peter looks at him seriously for a moment and then replies, 'Darrell, that's not Bud's house, that's mine.' "

Very funny, Ben...
Now, about this Saturday's Red River Shootout at the Cotton Bowl:
Item: Bob Stoops likes his teams chances: "I believe we have our overall strongest team coming into this game in five years," he was quoted as saying earlier this week...
Item: Jason White (!) suddenly is a Heisman trophy candidate (16 TDs, 3 picks, 1472 passing yards) as pronounced by Heisman Kingmakers ESPN...
Item: While OU has been parlaying a group of softies into a 5-0 record, Texas has experienced "character-builders" against Arkansas and Kansas State...
Item: Texas Wins this Saturday...

Damn YB,
Say it ain't so!
I agree that OU has not played any contenders, but that is how a team becomes number one i.e. see Miami year after year.
You have to admit that playing patsy's and running up the score is good for your ratings.
Texas will lose this game as Mack Brown will pick the wrong quarterback on Saturday and Bob Stoops will out coach him with a slightly better team.
Money in the bank.
By Pirate on Thursday, October 09, 2003 - 09:16 am: Edit |
Agree with Ben....OU wins....not sure when Texas will figure out that Mack Brown can recruit but he can't coach!

Re: Miami vs. Florida State...
Item: Miami is struggling mightily this year, tho no one from South Florida is admitting as much...Twice they have had to pull-off improbable come-backs against "not quite ready for prime-time" competition in Florida and West Virginia...
Item: Last year, Florida State had Miami beat in Miami with a much weaker Seminole squad than this year and a much stronger Hurricane squad...Florida State led all day, and then lost 28-27 on a "wide-left" field goal-- an interesting variation on a familiar theme in this series...
Item: The game will be played in the rain at Tallahassee...
Item: Florida State wins on Saturday...

I was right about Brown starting the wrong QB, but wrong in thinking Oklahoma was a slightly better team. Texas is/was a very overrated team.
The QB for Texas, Vince Young, is very impressive.
Oklahoma's defense is awesome inspite their losing two starters for the season. Team speeed is maybe better than Miami's.
Jason White may have a shot at the Heisman.
Probably the best team Bob Stoops has ever had at OU.
I know, I know, Who have they played?
Missouri and Okla. State could break my heart, and maybe even TexasTech.
By Pirate on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 04:01 pm: Edit |
Stupid move by OU....a win is a win....but a blow out will cause all those tea sippers to seriously question Mack Brown....whereas with a mere one or two TD loss they could always say to themselves..."with all these studs Mack keeps recruiting we are bound to start winning....just have a little patience"
Seriously...I think OU clearly better than Texas...but vulnerable....Bama almost took em....and Bama lost to Northern Illinois....
Miami, Georgia, VT and maybe SC all look good enough to give OU all they want come bowl time....
By Ben on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 04:17 pm: Edit |
"tea sippers" thats funny as I haven't heard that term in a long time.
Would agree with the first three teams, but come on SC??? I assume you mean Univ. of Southern Cal., not South Carolina.
Also Oklahoma will have to play Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game and Neb. is a very improved team.
By Pirate on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 02:10 pm: Edit |
Ben, I was sucking up to the patrons of this SoCal-dominated board by mentioning SC (yes,Southern Cal)almost as an afterthought....I really don't think they could beat OU even if they played as well as they did against Auburn, which was pretty darned good....And OU would humiliate Southern Cal if the Trojans played as they did against Cal...
I don't believe any of the other teams I mentioned could beat OU if the Sooners played at the same level as they did against Texas....damn, they looked awesome....
Trouble is, there aren't many teams that play at the top of their game week in/week out....Not OU and not any of the other teams in the top 4 or 5. They have all looked great at times, vulnerable at others.
Georgia is a great case in point....The Dawgs look phenomenal against the Vols in Knoxville, and anemic against LSU in Death Valley....
Miami took it to a good FSU team, but has almost lost twice to very average teams....
I could go on.....
Bottom Line...It's gonna be an interesting year...I am not sure any team will survive without a loss, and if they do they deserve the MNC (mythical national championship)....Northern Ill, not included....

Wow, Virginia Tech gets totally dominated tonight by 2-4 West Virginia...They lose 28-7 AND get outgained by over 200 yards...
Nevertheless, expect them to come back pissed-off and ready to battle when the Canes come to town on the 1st of November...This loss tonight makes that game all the more dangerous for Miami, I think...
Miami, btw, also hosts Tennessee and travels to Pittsburgh before this season is over..."Landmines Galore" for the Canes...

Re: Ben's Boomer Sooners...
OU's slate is basically wiped clean at this point until the Big 12 Title game against (probably) Nebraska...
They have the Heisman favorite at this point in Jason White, are Monsters on Defense, and are literally scoring at will...
Is there even any need to play-out the season?...We can't just name the Sooners as BCS champs right now?...
Let's take a closer look at that schedule, shall we?...At Colorado this Saturday, then Home against the Cowboys, uhhmm, oh yeah-- Texas A&M & Baylor-- and then cap the season off with a visit to Lubbock to play those crazy Red Raiders....
Ben, Texas Tech couldn't possibly beat OU, now, could they?...Nah...
OSU will not be able to either, right?...Not in Norman, anyway...
Colorado?...No way...
The Cornhuskers in that Big 12 title game?-- are you kidding me?; Solich vs. Stoops?...Come on...
Face it, Ben-- its in the bag...You've got nothing to worry about, really...
You'll probably draw SC in that BCS final-- no sweat, right?...

Here, I'll spell it out for you: TAKE THE HUSKIES AND THE POINTS, for Godssakes...
Say what you want about the UW, but they still have talent: was I the only one that cared to notice that they utterly dismantled a streaking, 21st-ranked Oregon St. squad in Corvallis last week?...
I realize SC is strong, but if you think the Dawgs will be intimidated by the Men of Troy tomorrow, think again...Not as Underdogs; Not in Seattle...

YB and BEn,
The Sooners appear to have gotten stronger each week....I was less than impressed when OU played Bama.....but if they continue to play at the present level, I wouldn't bet against them home field advantage and points not withstanding.
By Ben on Saturday, October 25, 2003 - 08:24 am: Edit |
OU usually has trouble at Colorado as many teams from areas of low altitude (Oklahoma has very few mountains in case you haven't noticed) have a hard time with the thin air.
You will see lots of oxygen on the Sooner sidelines.
This should be an easy one for OU as Colorado looks very weak, but as you well know, college football is very unperdictable.

Man those Cal Grads are strange.
Taken from a Yahoo message board regarding ICOS stock:
Friends:
Lots of love and Cialis here for everyone, but I can't sit idly while someone disparages the brave football players of my school.
The "battle royale" between Cal and USC was an instant classic (as opined by ESPN). Our coach, Jeff Tedford, is an unrequited football genius, inspiring the brave men (and women--there is a transvestite on the Cal team who suits up) of the Golden Bears to athletic feats that transcend the limits of their bodies--and minds.
The truth is that Cal always puts up a good fight against USC. And the reason is that Cal is a public school where the working people are able to better themselves--whereas USC is a school where the sons and daughters of priviledge learn techniques to exploit the masses--as well as make confusing art films.
Roll on you Bears.
And please note, the approval of Cialis will be a heavenly sign that we are now entering a new diaspora of love and happiness.

Oklahoma 8-0 has big game this week against 7-1 Oklahoma State. OSU has beat OU the past two years and OSU has a better team now than the previous two years. I think home field will help OU, but this should be a real battle.
OU has never in 97 years lost to OSU three years in a row and OU has dominated 74-16-7 according to ESPN.

Pirate:
Georgia loses to Florida this week, and if by some freak of nature they do not, Auburn will defeat them next week...Hence, 2 losses for Georgia...
Florida State will lose to Florida in the final game of their season...Hence, 2 losses for Florida State...
From here, tho, it gets trickier: Virginia Tech defeats Miami on Saturday, thus leaving both the Canes and Hokies with one loss...
OU does indeed beat the Cowboys this Saturday, but they will be defeated by Nebraska in the Big 12 title game...
Southern Cal will win-out in the Pac-Ten...
Thus, Oklahoma, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Southern Cal will all finish the season with one loss...
I am guessing that in the resulting shakeout that SC gets a BCS title game bid...

YB,
Pass the pipe. Good call on the VT game. I agreed with the Florid/Georgia pick, but couldn't believe the score of the VT/Miami. I disagree with anyone beating Oklahoma this year. They look like men playing against highschool boys in all the big games. I think they will win out including the national championship, and I'm not a sooner fan. Hate to say it, but my Buckeyes will get beat in Ann Arbor this year, so I see USC and Oklahoma in a not very close title game.
By Ben on Sunday, November 02, 2003 - 07:21 am: Edit |
YB,
Good predictions for the week, but Nebraska may not be in the Big 12 championship game.
Oklahoma State stopped the Sooners from scoring any points on their first possion which the announcers made a big deal about at the time. Things went down hill for OSU after that and OU wins by 6 touchdowns and not three as YB suggested.
Stoops really ran up the score (in my opinion) in the last quarter and said after the game that OU needed some trash talk from OSU as we mainly just hear positive things about our team.
Man did their defense look great!
