Ditto mi hermano.
Indiana was stupid to fire him for righteously trying to help out an errant bastard (is there any other kind?). We should be so lucky to have more Bobby Knights (wouldn't mind a few more primas at La Tropa either-oops, off topic).

Saint Bobby?

Come on you Hoosier fanatics, he is an asshole.

He may be ethical and honest following the NCAA rules,(what a refreshing idea) but still an asshole. That guy is probably the most hardheaded and inflexible basketball coach in the country.

May he rot in hell or better still in Lubbock,Texas which is hotter than hell.

By sampson on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 12:40 pm:  Edit

i remebmer when he kicked off 6 scholarship athletes in i believe 79-80 season. i just wonder how many coaches would have the nads to do that. ben you sound bitter, did a coach knight team knock your team from the tourney in your lifetime?

maybe i should write him a letter....since he turned down 1/million dollars this year, maybe he could donate it to the save sampson foundation.

By Ben on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 01:39 pm:  Edit

Not bitter at all.

Even though he is an asshole I guess I should have emphasized that he does have some good qualities.

I think Barry Switzer is a much more admirable coach to worship.

By sampson on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 07:54 pm:  Edit

funny you mention this asshole. when i did morning radio several years ago(just a part time sports personality in phoenix), the big discussion was wheter or not marcus depree was going to play since he missed several practices. then it game out that he hadn't been in a class in two weeks. of course i said that if he was a basketball player at indiana, the game wouldn't even be a topic of discussion. miss class and you are not allowed in practice. of course switzer was trying to put some kind of spin on the situation to allow depree to play. he has to be the worse coach to win an ncaa championship. with all the talent and lack of discipline you would have thought ok u would have won like 10 championships.

of course he made that great statement about aikman when he left for ucla. probably the best passer we ever had at o u. why didn't he say the only fricking passer he had at o u.

of course you were joking old man, but you are very old.

By Ben on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 08:25 am:  Edit

Barry Switzer coached Oklahoma to 3 national titles (1974-75,85); 4th on all-time winning pct list at .837 (157-29-4); resigned in 1989 after OU was slapped with 3-year NCAA probation; hired as Dallas Cowboys head coach in 1994 and led team to victory in Super Bowl XXX in 1996.

Who has that asshole Knighr beat lately?

Burn in Lubbock Bobby Knight

Maybe Lute really didn't want to win this game?

By Happyboy on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 09:53 am:  Edit

lol, well, i have nothing to say...

oregon over asu in the 1st round..

if usc, ucla, or oregon win the pac 10 tourney, ASU will probably head to the NIT tourney...

cant believe they let that Hobbit guy go coast to coast with 12 seconds left..
I still think U A will be a one seed,

By Happyboy on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 09:58 am:  Edit

btw, Lute and Montgomery (stanford) have said in various interviews that they dont like to have to play the pac 10 tourney, (because usually stanford and ua are 1-2 in the standings, and a upset loss in the first round will possibly hurt seedings)

By Ben on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 09:59 am:  Edit

I say this is a really wide open NCAA tournament. Like i said before it may be the wildcats that win it all, just not the AZ wildcats.

Hey what happens if Steve Lavin and UCLA win the Pac 10 conference and then do well in the NCAA's? Does he get to keep his job? What a story that would be for basketball.

By Curiousone on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 01:45 pm:  Edit

Every season Lavin has one or two great wins to hold onto his job. He will sneak into the tourney and win one or two and yet again be rewarded for mediocrity.

By sampson on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 03:46 pm:  Edit

sneak in...the only way they get in is to win the fricking tourney. then they would be the automatic pac conference reprensentative.

By Ben on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 02:12 pm:  Edit

Speaking of sneaking in, Texas Tech is losing 29 to 19 right now to Oklahoma, but they seem to giving OU a tough time.

Holy shit, I would have kill Sampson if Bobby Knight's Texas Tech beat Oklahoma.

I wonder if Knight would ask for his salary back?

By Curiousone on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 04:03 pm:  Edit

Not only the tourney winner goes to the 64. Pac 10 will often have 2 or 3 teams in the dance from at large picks by the gourney gurus.

By Happyboy on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 03:17 pm:  Edit

Looks like UA will get no 1 seed and go to salt lake city, Pac 10 sends five teams..

By Justdan on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 04:47 pm:  Edit

wow!!!! no favors done for Arizona......

Assuming they get past the first round or two
(no wisecracks Happyboy)lol

They "may" have to play:

Illinois in sweet 16
Duke or Kansas in the elite 8
Kentucky in the final 4
Texas or Oklahoma for the championship

that is a TOUGH road,
4 very tough games

If they win it all, they will have earned it.

dont know if they can do it :-(
let the games begin

jd

By Ben on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 05:28 pm:  Edit

I think Kentucky has the easiest road and is the best team so I pick Duke to win it

early predictions
wisconsin/milwaukee +5 against notre dame
southern illinois +4 against missouri
holy cross +11 against marquette
penn+3 against ok state
butler +7- against mississippi state

probably will come up with a few more, but those stood out from the getgo

Superman's Super Prediction:

The UConn Men and Women will take it all!! Huskymania baby!

ow-Superman-ow

By Porker on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 - 09:36 am:  Edit

To maximize your mongering cash, I will repeat the easiest prediction in sports wagering: Bet the 1 and 2 seeds in the first round of the NCAA's. Lay the 30 points or whatever it takes. I haven't looked up the %'s recently, but it's well over 2/3. They simply can't set a high enough number to buck the trend. The 15-16 seeds couldn't beat the JV teams at most of the basketball factories. When the scrubs go in in the second half they DOMINATE.

Please beware, though, that I am the reason casinos are rich and people like me are always crying about their 'luck'...

By Happyboy on Friday, March 21, 2003 - 01:21 am:  Edit

great job sampson, u da man... i picked penn to win in the first round over okla state... ASU gets a mild upset over Memphis and Calipari, who basically cried all week about how they got "snubbed" by the NCAA and should have received a 4 seed.. Now the Sun Devils take on the big boys Kansas on sat night...wasnt too impressed by the Jayhawks tonight as they escaped with a three point win over Utah State.. then again, they barely beat Holy Cross last year in the first round, went to the final 4...

By T_bone on Friday, March 21, 2003 - 01:57 am:  Edit

Yes, nice job Sampson. If one picked the underdog in each game Thursday (Caliente morning line) you would have been 12-3-1.

Only Arizona (by 3.5), UCONN (by .5), and Stanford (by 1.5) covered. Wisconsin was a push. Seven favorites won but didn't cover and five favorites lost.

I like this 'underdog strategy' it in that there seem to be a lot of close games and a there are always a few upsets in the first round. It would be just as easy probably to go 4-12 this way on Friday though.

Porker, your strategy is 1-2 so far.

By Justdan on Friday, March 21, 2003 - 04:45 pm:  Edit

Damn happyboy,

does that mean I have to root for Arizona State to beat Kansas?

UGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!! Shudder at the thought (lol)

AZ Wildcats survive against Gonzaga in double overtime....
sheeesh my heart cant take too much more of this shit.

very lucky :-)

By Superman on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 08:13 pm:  Edit

That was a great game. Refs blew a call at the end.

Is UConn still in it? Emeka rules!

-Superman-
ouch

By Justdan on Sunday, March 23, 2003 - 09:38 am:  Edit

yep UCONN is still there, I think they have an excellent chance to make it to the final four.

Re:AZ vs. Gonz I think there were 2 big blown calls. The first one was when Gardner fell on his ass dribbling the ball then lost it, and the time keeper didnt start a new clock.

Also when Stoudimire kicked the ball off his own leg, he was obviously held on that play.

Me biased? nah.......

By sampson on Sunday, March 23, 2003 - 02:08 pm:  Edit

so busy over weekend no time to cap. saw much of the butler bulldog second round win today. enjoyed every minute of it. smart team that plays as a team. the one kid was unconcience. they might still have another win in them--i think they play oklahoma next.

By Happyboy on Sunday, March 23, 2003 - 04:56 pm:  Edit

az wildcats got lucky, enough about the blown calls, the gonzaga point guard missed a couple of three pointers and a wide open jump shot at the end.. But i dont see az having a problem with the fighting Irish, unless ND shoots 66% or better from the three point line..
A couple of upsets, with Butler and Auburn going to the sweet 16...

Good job Sampson.

tonight butler plus seven and michigan state plus three and a half.

By sampson on Saturday, March 29, 2003 - 01:12 pm:  Edit

butler fought gamely but was tremendously outrebounded. lost the game on the glass--i think 39-20. michigan state manhandled maryland and then folded--same thing with the cuse and auburn. thought u conn was going to get the job done.

todays games show me no value. ky -7/ marquette +7, az -2-kansas +2-, ky/marquette total 141
az/kansas total158-/ can't bet without perceived value.

tomorrow will back michigan state +4-, hope they forget the last few minutes of maryland game. besides texas usually beats itself when it loses. will lay the points with oklahoma -3, if they can control the boards like friday night they will murder syracuse.

Fall down, Arizona, Fall down... lol.... AZ Wildcats had a tremendous year, no doubt about it..Nothing to be ashamed of, a great season.. JD, they got two Mcdonalds All Americans coming in next year, and Lute Olsen said in an interview that the new point guard is the "best ever" better than bibby, terry, or stodimaire... that said a lot.. JD, you know UA doesnt rebuild, they just reload... ASU gets its redshirt frosh Serge back, and a top blue chipper from Kansas, a center... they will have a big front line, but i dont know who is going to run the point.. Braxton?? UGH...

By MrBill on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 01:52 pm:  Edit

Awful sorry about that KANSAS victory, JD. Payback is a bitch... At least the top two chokers in the NCAA didn't choke too much last night. It was a great game. But KU is going to have to let someone besides Hinrich shoot the ball or they're going to lose. KU didn't even try to move the ball to the center all night.

By Justdan on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 02:49 pm:  Edit

Oh my!!! MrB graces us with his presence ;)

you are correct, back in 97 Kansas was ranked
no. 1 and favored to win it all. Arizona broke
their hearts. So you are right, pay back, blah blah blah. Although full payback will not be achieved unless they win it all.
Drop Flop Jay-Hawk..... lol

Happyboy,

Kick a guy when he's down....Nice guy..... :-(
You are correct, they will not be lacking for talent. I'm looking foward to next year they are gonna be far more athletic, which should mean more devastating runs. Cant wait to see Adams and Iguodala mature. AZ should be top 10 pre-season next year.......... I think UConn and Duke will be the teams to beat next year. Texas I think will lose TJ Ford to the NBA.

Cant wait till next year since this years basketball season is over.........lol

By sampson on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 05:37 pm:  Edit

not too good of a day for me. oklahoma was my worse pick of the tourney, at least michigan state battled. marquette looks the best of the remaining four. can't believe that either syracuse or texas will be in the final game.

By Happyboy on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 11:01 pm:  Edit

cant believe it either, i picked tex and syracuse in the final four, kentucky and illinois as well, but i got kentucky beating syracuse in the final game..

By Youngbrig on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 12:55 pm:  Edit

I have always been a fan of the straight 2-3 Zone-- when played with heart and discipline, it is basketball's great equalizer at any level-- and thus it was refreshing to see Syracuse's Jim Boeheim employ it to frustrate the older and more talented Jayhawks last night...

Kansas-- as the better team of the two-- really should have won and would have won if their deficit (18 points) had not got quite so big in the early going...

Perhaps their easy dispatch of a talented Marquette squad led them to believe that the title was theirs and thus affected-- albeit slightly-- their will to win...From my vantage point last night it was clear from the get-go that they were a half-step behind the Orangemen...

YoungBrig

By sampson on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 03:06 pm:  Edit

guess we didn't see the same game or games texas scored 84 and kansas 78--can't praise a 2-3 defense for great work. kansas outhustled for loose balls and rebounds the entire game. pounded the ball inside consistenly, but lost because of 12-30 from the line. you want to credit the orangemen defense then credit their defense against the free throw--held kansas to 40%.

i have been hearing bits and pieces of the story about the iowa state coach and his drinking problems the last few days on 690 and 1090.

the callers seem to think he shouldn't be fired, because he has admitted his addiction and is seeking help. i say bullfucking shit. as much as this is big time business--he is their to coach kids of which most are not of drinking age. the fact that he was a participant in a party with 19 year olds(male or female) is as wrong as two left shoes. now granted most of us are not perfect(please believe that i''m not), but the university losses creditibility if they retain him.

1)he broke the law--he could be an alcoholic and not broke the law and then in all likelihood they could retain him. it is even more damaging that he was breaking the law with people in a similar situation to those that he is recruiting.

2)competing university''s would have a field day talking to parents of recruits to sway their position.

3)it's iowa fucking state--they already have to battle uphill odds to recruit--no facility with national championship banners and already playing second fiddle to steve alford for in state recruiting.

i'm sure he is a good coach, but i don't see how this can be overlooked right now. in time he should be given a second chance, but i don't see how iowa state can retain him as men's head basketball coach.

he would have a better argument if he was found in a hooker bar in tj--at least he could say he didn't break any laws.
