These come from:
http://www.sonia-portuguese.com/index.htm
There are also detailed pages on grammer (pronouns, adverbs, ect.) with numerous examples. Many of the words or letters have an audio link so you can hear them being spoken. However, they require RealPlayer which I won't download so I don't know if these audio files actually work.

That's a cool site - I asked my tutor here in DC where the originals came from and even she didn't know!
These guides were the most useful that I came across when I was just starting to seriously learn Portuguese. For me, I listened to the Barron's series of tapes (similar to Pimsleur but with a book to follow along with) which helped some. I used a few books as well - "Brazilian Portuguese" was the main one. Of course, going to Brasil every four months helps too!
These days, I'm concentrating on "501 Portuguese Verbs". I made the mistake when starting on Portuguese of focusing on nouns, adjectives, etc and not spending as much time on verbs. Then, I was informed that, unlike English, where verbs are secondary to nouns, in Portuguese verbs are more important than nouns.
It's interesting, if you take a technical view of language, how subtle the differences are, not in words and pronunciation but in the actual language structure, sentence structure, word order, etc.

This book is a must. $6 and it boils Portuguese grammar down to about 100 pages.

I finally found someone locally who speaks Portuguese. She was running an ad on Craigslist looking for students so I gave her a call. We had our first lesson last week for an hour of almost 100% Brazilian Portuguese. I "think" I was following her for a good part of the time and she apparently understood most of what I was trying to say. When in doubt I use a Spanish word and wait to see what happens. If nothing else I was really impressed at what I have actually learned from the Pimsleur lessons.
