Wow horrible news for the Cleveland Browns, Jamir Miller LB blew his achilles tendon and is out for season.
QB Trent Dilfer sprained a knee and may be out for a while.
Broncos lost Chris Cole backup wr for the season.
Chargers did not look very good, but I noticed cheerleaders have new uni and their line up seems to have much improved. That Sanders could be our backup RB so we can get rid of Fletcher.

NFL news with no mention of the Cowboys dismantling the Raiders Friday night?

By Ben on Sunday, August 11, 2002 - 01:49 pm:  Edit

One bright spot for the Chargers was Josh Norman.

Where did he go to college?

Hey Super,

Carter looked decent at quarterback.

Norman is playing tight end and Dallas could have had him as a free agent. Damn.

By Athos on Sunday, August 11, 2002 - 04:00 pm:  Edit

Norman is a first year or second year player free agent. Probably will make the team as no 3 TE, so we can get rid of Heiden.
Dallas lost one of their OL for season opener during practice.

By Ben on Sunday, August 11, 2002 - 04:49 pm:  Edit

Norman a first year free agent out of Oklahoma.

Played wide receiver in college, but weighs 235-240 lbs. Has wide receiver hands and speed, but big enough to play tight end.

By Superman on Sunday, August 11, 2002 - 05:46 pm:  Edit

Carter looked great. 10-13, 96 yards, one TD in just under a half.

Anything less than playoffs this year and Super Bowl next year will be highly disappointing.

I love Oklahoma and plan to go to Orange Bowl this year, where they will play Miami for the National Championship and win..

Dallas could be a big upset team this year, but they need a better offensive line to really compete.

Just sobered up and realized that the national champion game may not be in the Orange bowl this year.

Anybody know which bowl will hold the final game for 2002?

Rose bowl or bowel was last year, I think?

THIS IS THE FRIGGIN' PRE-SEASON, YOU FUCKING LOSERS. WHO CARES?

I feel sorry for dudes who suffer major injuries during pre-season stupidity. I like Bud Grant's old philosophy... If you are a veteran, just show up to opening day healthy. While other coaches chewed up and spit out their vets by overworking them, Grant got many extra years out of highly talented players. Too bad his team was the perpetually lame-ass Minnesota Vikings.

By Ben on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 01:12 pm:  Edit

Just saw your post regarding losers.

I retract my post about you being funny and well educated.

Hombre, when you read this, please change my post to read something derogatory about Dogster, who admires a coach that lost the Superbowl four fuckin times.

By Ben on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 01:15 pm:  Edit

Grant couldn't even teach his players which direction to run with the ball.

Ya damn loser

By T_Bone on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 02:04 pm:  Edit

I take offense for the bad-mouthing of HOF Larry Bud Grant. He is 0-4 in Super Bowls (should have won the first one) and ran into great Miami, Pittsburg, and Oakland teams. In '75 I believe the Vikings were #1 in the NFL in O and D and then got screwed with the Hail Mary/Drew Pearson/blatant offensive interference call.

I don't blame Grant for HOF Jim Marshall running the wrong way and turning a potential touchdown into a safety - for someone who gave 240+ consecutive games to his team that is excusable and a classic.

By Ben on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 06:23 pm:  Edit

I had a hundred dollar bet with my then brother in law on the Vikings/Dallas game. He wouldn't pay me off because of the push off by Pearson. Roger Stabach, what a winner.

I can't believe a Vikings fan still remembers the play. Also remember the bottle coming out of the stands at the ref who made the call. Perfect throw of a whisky bottle at his head.

By Ben on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 06:24 pm:  Edit

Your right Jim Marshall was and still is class.

By Dogster on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 06:52 pm:  Edit

Gotta agree Bud Grant was cool, and also with everything that TB said. Betchya didn't know Grant won a championship with the Lakers, by the way. I simply think his attitude about pre-season was exactly right. American football is a highly injurious sport, so why burn up yer players before the season even starts?

Ah, the Vikes... I don't lose much sleep over them, these days. For many years, I've pulled for the Doncos and 49ers, if I pay any attention to this steroidal thug-sport (speaking of cows). I mean, it football *almost* as pathetic as what baseball has become.

When will the Raiders come to town? That'll be a good weekend to avoid the Zona Norte...

By Dogster on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 06:54 pm:  Edit

Ben: I remember that FUCKING play.

By Dogster on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 06:55 pm:  Edit

P.S. Death to all Cowboys fans.

By Ben on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 07:19 pm:  Edit

Dog,

If you would like I will burn a cd of the "fuvking play" so you can watch it over and over again. You betcha!

Does this mean that lunch is on me next time?

Bud Grant was a great athelete and also loved duck huntimg in northern Minnesota.

I use to go to Detroit Lakes in the fall for both duck hunting and white tail deer hunting.

Also use to drink snowshoes.

By Ben on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 09:52 pm:  Edit

What are snowshoes?

A shot of peppermint snapps with a shot of Wild Turkey burbon floating on top.

Setting in the Detroit Lakes, MN VFW in the late fall with snow on the ground and our snowmobiles parked in front was a great time for male bonding. No women allowed in the bar until after the polka band showed up at 8:00 that night. By then we were either road hunting for deer or ice fishing. No women allowed.

By Snapper on Tuesday, August 13, 2002 - 07:27 am:  Edit

Ice fishing, snowmobiling, and Vikings football are the three things I miss must about Minnesota.

I always heard a rumor that on Lake Mille Lacs there was a hooker that would snowmobile out to your icehouse. Unfortunately I never know how to find her.

Sorry to see that Terrell Davis must retire prematurely due to injury. He was certainly one of the best 3 or 4 at his position in his prime. The Elway-Davis offense was remarkably good.

AFC CHampionship: Pitt over Indy
NFC Championship: SF over Rams (Mike Marsh will find a way to fuck up)

Super Bowl: Pitt

Looks like I may have to go to the SUper Bowl this year and celebrate.

The SB is in San Diego so you are saving on travel. 2 to 3k should get you inside stadium.

By Athos on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 - 10:20 am:  Edit

Steelers 6 to 1 to win SB
Steelers 5 to 2 to win AFC Conference.
Did not see any over/under for wins at Caliente.

By sampson on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 - 02:43 pm:  Edit

i see 10 1/2 on pitt. i don't know if caliente offers this prop, but it never hurts to ask. it is crazy not to accept bets on these when you can hold the money for months and earn interest on it.

By Athos on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 - 02:47 pm:  Edit

I checked only the caliente in ZN so my guess over/under are already available unless they wait till end of preseason.

By Bullitt on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 - 07:27 pm:  Edit

Caliente used to have a website and they also had an 800 number. I cannot remember the phone number and the website seems to be nonexistent.

By Athos on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 - 09:17 pm:  Edit

They still have a web site with basically no info on it.
Their free number is 800 PIK BAJA.

I guess I'm wrong again. I smelled a 49er blowout of the Jints and would have gladly given the three points.

By Athos on Thursday, September 05, 2002 - 10:18 pm:  Edit

Big key is how Ram RT StClair fares on sun in Denver. If he does well, Rams will kill Giants following sun week 2. If he does not do well as he is seen as weak link, then all bets are off with Strahan almost beating Rams last year or 2 years ago in St Louis?
For your info OOT, the Giants have never reached playoffs after an 0-2 start.
Damn the swami my man Chris Berman is picking Bengals to beat my Chargers.

By Ootie on Friday, September 06, 2002 - 12:34 pm:  Edit

Athos,

Don't forget that the Giants outplayed and beat up the Rams in Saint Louis last year despite losing 15-14. If the 49ers are the Super Bowl contender that all the experts seem to agree on, then the Giant performance last night was pretty decent, although in a losing effort.

vikings

Possible new stadium for the Vikings. Hopefully the twins will use this stadium too.

By Katokay on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 02:56 pm:  Edit

The Super Bowl champions continue to get no respect. The Pats upgraded their offense but are underdogs to the Steelers at home this coming Monday night. I predict the Patriots will repeat as AFC champs and if the NFC champs think they have won the SuperBowl before they step on the field,as the Rams did, the Pats will repeat.

By Powerslave on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 03:01 pm:  Edit

Hopefully no public funds will pay for this new Vikings stadium. The NFL and MLB billionaires get enough welfare already.

By Blazers on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 07:03 pm:  Edit

The Patriots winning the Super Bowl last year was the biggest fluke in NFL history. Even the linesmen know this is true. The Pats may win because it is their opening game at home but dont look for them to get two special teams touchdowns in the AFC CHampionship and 2 defensive touchdowns in the SUper Bowl. The Pats opponents had better stats than them in every one of their post-season games. That is the first time that has ever happened in NFL history. The luck of the Boston Irish will only kiss them once.

By Superman on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 07:22 pm:  Edit

They could play that game 20 times and the Rams would win 19. Incredible fluke.

Still, the Rams were overconfident and underprepared.

Martz is a horrible head coach.

-Superman-

By Ben on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 08:47 pm:  Edit

Martz is a good offensive coach, but not a good head coach.

Vermeil was and is still the man that got the Rams back on track. He has been a winner where ever he has gone, including maybe the biggest fluke in pro football history today.

By Dogster on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 10:37 pm:  Edit

The Vikes don't need a slick new stadium. They need a snowy mud bowl like the one they had in the '70s when they blasted the Rams repeatedly in key games.

It was nice to see Denver take a bite out of the Rams today.

49ers won, too, so all is good.

Anyway, I'm trying to give a shit about football this year. Buncha dumb-ass steroid cases.

By Superman on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 12:01 am:  Edit

Damn, I thought there was nothing more miserable than Dwayne Rudd getting a penalty after the game was over and causing the Brown's to lose ... that was until Dallas lost to an expansion team. Jesus, Quincy Carter is a miserable QB. Great defense, great line, great running game, great receivers, and a miserable fucking QB. Damn, if only Troy Aikman was not soft in the head.

-Superman-

By Superman on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 12:06 am:  Edit

I actually agree with Dogsta (will wonders never cease). The Vikings need an open-air stadium where they can use their home field as a weapon. Then again, I don't think Randy Moss would be much of a factor in 10 degree weather. He only plays hard when he wants to ...

Dogsta, you seem obsessed with steroids. You must be a 150 pound weakling all bitter at guys who are bigger than you. Get over it. I'm picturing a 5'8", 150 pound, bald headed nerd. Correct me if I'm wrong.

NOW WAIT A MINUTE SUPERMAN Dogster has hair.

And while we are on the subject, I think it is very unbecoming to tell everybody what a stud you think you are and how you are "ripped".

Speaking of unbecoming, I told you so:

Bens post from June 2002.

"Roy Williams was a great pick for Dallas. This guy is fast and loves to hit. Also very smart.

I think defense will be great, but unfortunately they are going to be on the field most of the time.

Offense has a great, but very old running back and really no quarterback.

Chad Hutchinson played high school football about 6 blocks from my house and he was incredible. They had special reserve parking for all the football and baseball scouts who showed up for Torry Pines baseball and football games.. He also played fairly good quarterback on a really lousy Stanford football team. I think he is a longshot at best, but he sure has the pedigree.

Quincy Carter is also a big question mark. I think they also have a huge problem in their offensive line."

By Ben on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 08:42 am:  Edit

Also I don't like Dave Campo.

Dallas looks like a poorly coached team.

By Athos on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 12:30 pm:  Edit

How about those Cowboys losing to Texans ruining my perfect day.
Chargers will crush Texans next week.
Quincy Carter might get pulled if they go 0-2 vs decent Titans team.

Superman
Cowboys going to SB next year...dream on

By Ootie on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 01:12 pm:  Edit

Athos is right. SD should slaughter the Texans next week.

You gotta feel bad for Superman. That's the kind of loss that can ruin a season. Of course, I have no business talking considering the way the Mets have played this year. Can the Yankees beat both the Angels and A's?

Okay, back on-topic. Time for me to give MNF advice until I'm wrong. Tonight I would take New England with the three points. Look at the Steeler history: they always seem to start slow; even in mid-season, they usually play close games.

Athos,

who they hell are the boys going to use if they replace Carter. Todd Hutchinson?(hasn't thrown a football in angry in four years since Stanford)

Hey, how about calling up Ryan Leaf, he isn't busy right now?

One game against Cinncinati doesn't make the Chargers that good, but damn they looked good.

Marty(how ever you spell his last name) Schotenheimer looks like the real deal as head coach and John Butler seems to be a good GM(hope he is doing OK health wise).

By Athos on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 02:37 pm:  Edit

Ben
I did not say the Chargers are good but no offensive flag, unheard of, first time in 20 years...go Martyball.
I thought Cowboys were supposed to be good this year, they looked so unprepared.
That blitz of Texans does not worry me, unfortunately Las Vegas has Chargers -13 already.
Texans have nothing, no RB, no WR, slow pocket QB, no DL, OK LB, over the hill CB's. I smell blood but 13 is too much.
How about those Rams -12.5 vs Giants, Giants can win that game.
