Okay, I admit it. I find myself mesmerized by this whole thread. Lately, I've noticed these types of arguments on both the Asia Board and the SA Board, and everytime, I watch and read in fascination. Kind of like a car accident.

In every case, it always seems to me that one party to the dispute is WAAAAY off base. I've been wondering if the other members reading agree or disagree with my take.

Is there some way that Hombre can create a special area where we members can vote for one side or the other. Because not all disagreements are belligerent, we could vote as follows:

a. Mr. X has the better argument
b. Mr. Y has the better argument
c. Mr. X is way out of line
d. Mr. Y is way out of line
e. Too close to call
f. Both are insane

Or something like that. The purpose of this would be two-fold. One, we could see if our opinion is in the majority (not that being in the majority makes someone correct), and two, the "losing" party may gain a little perspective. After all, it is unlikely that both parties can continue to argue that "clearly, everyone on the board agrees with me and think you are an idiot."

Laguy, I agree with you that there is no point to this whatsoever. And even I would be hard pressed to remember exactly what started all this, but like Segue99 I find the venom facinating. You must understand that not once has there been any anger behind a post of mine. I am probably one of the few people who enjoys flame wars.

Consider that a flame war is bickering by two or more anonymous people on an internet chat board. Usually over trivial subjects. It never ceases to amaze me how irate people can get.

These things do get out of hand at time, which is where moderators come in. Inevitably people like TRW go the path of Turk and KidCisco and get banned if they arent careful. It can go to far, for example: Those of you who followed KidCrisco's thread may remember that one of his buddies copied all my posts about mongering, found my wife's email address and mailed her what I had written on this board. Through a group effort we were able to correctly identify the person who did it and he was banned forever.

Anyway, back to Segue99's suggestion: I think it would be fun. Couldnt we just set up a poll as an option? If I had to respond to "Is GCL insane?" I guess I would have to vote yes.

This is all too funny. This reminds me of 2 teenage girls going at it in highschool. Two grown men going back and forth over meaningless details, each one thinking they are getting the better of the other.

Segue99, your suggestion is an amusing one and I'll admit I'd be curious myself as to whether my own opinion was in the majority.

However, flame wars are an annoyance and I have no interested in drawing attention to them, but for the non-belligerent disagreements, GCL's poll idea is suitable.

I'm far from secretly amused when it comes to these situations, they take up far too much time because I put a lot of careful thought and consideration into them. In addition, I still usually receive flak from both sides because my decisions are often a compromise and the individuals involved usually expect everything should have gone their way.

TRW is a client of Don's but as we all know, that does not make you a great guy. Argueing just to argue is pretty stupid. As GCL wrote, they eventually get totally wrapped around the axel and go overboard on the insults or turn to rats or something of the sort. What a moron. Once again, the stereotype of the loud-mouth know-it-all New Yorker has been displayed for all to see.

GCL, I wish you would learn how to spell. I spent a while scratching my head about your use of the "word" Noone. First I thought you were referring to Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits, but I couldn't understand why he should be forced to admit to daytrading. And besides, I don't think he is a member so making this announcement here was truly puzzling.

Anyway, the sad conclusion to this entertaining thread leads me to wonder again about the psychology behind these things. For me I have always found this a fun diversion. The board seems to warp people's sense of reality and they just go overboard with it. There are numerous examples.

These out of control board members get driven to a frenzy and try to take the issue out of the boards and into real life, by threats, or in my case sending my wife board content. I know of several other examples. Sadly, this sort of thing is why I stopped wanting to personally know board members long ago. I have a few friends from this board in real life, but I have met my share of wackjobs too. KidCisco is an example: I was his tour guide on his first trip to Rio and introduced him to the source of his misery (a pretty mulata who's name escapes me).

Anyway, my point to newer board members is this. This is the best board of its kind, in the world, in my opinion. Take advantage of the information here, have fun here, exchange stories, joke around, even poke fun; but dont take it too seriously. And be very very careful meeting other board members and sharing too much personal information.

Most guys on here are cool, but you never know... Consider that a respected, wealthy, board-certified physician who seemed like a nice guy at the time, went totally over the deep end and used ever single personal detail about people he had met on his trip to Rio against the very people who were helping him. And he didnt just do it via the board, he tried to cause people harm by involving their families.

Okay, well I feel like we should play Taps or something.

When I returned home from taking my “disorganized daughter” back to college (what a fucking expensive nightmare that was), I looked on the board and saw that Therightway hadn’t posted anything in a few days, so I figured he might be sick. I called him and he told me that he had been suspended, something I know a lot about from my high school days. “How long will you have to sit in the corner?” I asked. He didn’t know and when I asked him why he got suspended he replied, “I got caught looking at Miss September’s pictures too often.” “Shit, that’s grounds for a permanent suspension,” I responded as he moaned into the phone.

I remember months ago, when that asshole “Reporter B” went off the deep end and eventually managed to straighten himself out a little after that horrendous cluster-fuck last November that almost sent Hombre to the Funny Farm. Hey, come to think of it, TRW’s very first post started the whole fucking incident. Perhaps that’s what they call a “harbinger of things to come”; then again maybe it isn’t. Where was I? Oh yeah, needless to say, “Reporter B” has been somewhat well behaved even though, in my opinion, he doesn’t contribute much substantive information to this site just some inane ramblings about nothing. However, on occasion he manages to make me laugh out loud at his stupid antics as I ponder: How can anyone be that stupid?

Alright, back to TRW and the problem at hand. Actually, he told me why he was suspended and I told him that he sometimes takes things too far; way too far. This recently moved thread titled Round 9 is a prime example. I would also like to tell you about another incident that the two of us discussed over the phone this past Saturday as my youngest daughter and I were taking a well deserved time-out from each other before one of us committed murder.

If you recall, recently I posted something about Felix bringing stuff down to Brazil for his girlfriend to sell. Everything I wrote about was totally accurate and true (except my wild musings about banditos), but some of you on the board took it as an opportunity to insult his girlfriend whom you don’t even know. TRW was the most direct when he wrote:

Felix took exception with his caustic comments because it was getting much too personal and I agree. BTW, his girlfriend is a delightful woman who works several honest jobs to support her son and send him to a better school. Unfortunately, TRW insulted Felix by going too far in his criticism even though he had never met this girl. Yeah, I realize that many guys have been burned out there, but if you read what I wrote, you would know that this girl has never asked him for any money. In other words, she’s vastly different than a GDP and you guys are smart enough to recognize that fact.

She has never sold any of his personal gifts to her, only what she buys to sell or what Felix gives her to sell. What he chooses to do out of the kindness of his heart for this woman is something personal and we shouldn’t criticize him. I wrote what I did to inform all of you about the thriving Brazilian black market in electronics and, consequently, why goods imported directly from the US are in such high demand because of the shitty counterfeit goods manufactured in Paraguay. Clearly that point was missed by some individuals.

I never suspected that some of you would take that as an opportunity to attack Felix’s girlfriend and her motives rather than praising her for being a smart business woman. Had I anticipated such a response, I never would have posted it in the first place. Clearly, I’m culpable in this whole thing, after all, I posted it. But in my own defense, it took a direction far different than intended. I don’t know why I’m surprised at that because that’s the way everything in my life turns out despite my hopes and desires. Perhaps I should think more before I post!

Anyway back to my point, rather than attack Felix and his girlfriend, we should applaud him for being kind to a good woman, and in the end receiving much more in return than he gives. After all, isn’t that what most of us really want in life? Because he has found his happiness, we shouldn’t attack him.

Interestingly, when I informed TRW of how his “over the top” comments affected Felix, he was deeply hurt. He didn’t realize that his posts would be taken seriously and within minutes sent an email apology to Felix. I was really surprised that he took this action on his own and it shows that he’s a bigger man than I realized. He’s met Felix and realized, albeit after the fact that he inadvertently deeply offended him and insulted a fine woman and, on his own, took the first step to correct things.

You might be wondering what my point is and I apologize for taking so long to finally get around to my main point. That said, what particularly bothers me is that fact that there’s too many personal attacks containing aggressive and mean spirited comments. I respect everyone’s right to their own opinion providing it is based upon fact. Roblaw was clearly an exception and I called him on it because his opinions were based on sheer fantasy. That wasn’t my opinion, but rather a fact. I had the misfortune of spending six days with him on his inaugural trip to Rio in March of 2005. I spent every night in Help with him and, for the life of me, couldn’t figure out where he got his ideas when he wrote that infamous expose on Help. Delusional does quite describe him, but it’s close.

Like most of you, I found him very entertaining once I figured out all of his misspellings. Each day, I couldn’t wait to read his nonsense and read the more knowledgeable members’ futile attempts to correct his constant misinformation. You have to admit it; he was at the very least consistent! Since I knew him personally, I found that trying to tell him anything constructive was a worthless endeavor at best, so I gave him a wide berth. One thing positive about him, he wasn’t very mean spirited on the board just really stupid and uninformed.

TRW, on the other hand, has been consistently belligerent to an extreme and I find this a very disturbing trend. However, I have to admit that he has the ability to write some very entertaining things when he’s not in attack mode and I told him as much. Last night we had a long talk and I hope he understands that nobody wins in a “Flame session.”

As a matter of fact, he said he couldn’t recall of one instance in a flaming session where there was a winner. Of course, that begs the rhetorical question: Why stay in a flame session? Rather than there being winner, to the contrary, everyone looses. The flamers don’t look particularly bright by continuing the thread, but more importantly, everyone else on the board looses respect for the site for allowing this behavior. I think I got through to him, but I’m sometimes wrong.

I’m glad that TRW was suspended for his constant belligerent behavior because I don’t want to see this disturbing trend continue. I applaud Hombre for taking this drastic step and hope that this behavior becomes a thing of the past. While I realize that I don’t have the knowledge or history on this board that many of you possess, I don’t think any of you want this to continue. That said, I would like to know how long TRW will be suspended. Cleary he deserves some time in the corner, but I believe he now has a better grasp of how destructive his comments are by how much they hurt Felix. If he’s brought back, I told him that he should anticipate being on a short, a very short leash and to not get involved in any flame sessions. Should he be allowed back, I would be very disappointed if any of you whom I respect, tried to deliberately draw him into a flame session. Let all of us end it here!

Considering the fact that TRW has never posted a single informative item, I have no desire or need to see him on here again. It's one thing to flame occasionall if you also post useful information. All I ever read of him was busting peoples balls and bitching about and insulting other's posts.

He provides zero value to the board. His flames aren't even entertaining, as we've been discussing in this and a couple of other threads over the last week. As you say, he's simply beligerent and insulting with zero postive to counterweigh that.

I'm not sure what we're voting on, since it's up to Hombre and Jr. to make the call. The fact that he started flaming and got so into it that he went "off board" and starting posting personal information about people and was nothing but insults, frankly, I don't even know why he was on the board in the first place.

If it were up to me, I would have banned him long ago. He provides zero value and is a potential rat, seeing as he gets very into his flames for no real reason and seems to get very personal with them.
