Put me down for 8750 next week. I would be most happy with a flat market or a slight dip this week, though, since all of the options I sold are pretty far in the money. But I certainly wouldn't complain about a big rally, if I have to choose between a rally and a really steep drop.

What's your cut on AMR?
By Ben on Monday, October 28, 2002 - 07:15 am: Edit |
AMR, Hate it...Incredible amount of debt and they are going to lose at least $10-$12 a share this year.
Pilots and other employees have very strong and uncompromising unions who will eventually drive them into bankrupcy. You take airlines like
United and American whose expenses are unreasoable and let unions drive them to bankrupcy, deserve to go out of business.

You know who I am talking too.
Good news for smokers.
Nicotine is good for the heart and actually promotes the developement of new blood vessels.
Many believe it also helps promote memory.
So if you haven't stopped smoking, maybe you should reconsider. When you get lung cancer you might have a stronger heart to withstand the chemotherapy.
By Ldvee on Monday, October 28, 2002 - 06:20 pm: Edit |
Yeah, but the airline industry isn't going away, just down the toilet. I'm going to think about it. Thanks for the good news about smoking. I was going to quit but I forgot. Mexican heart workout scheduled for Wed. night, I'll be using the new blood vessels, maybe I'll blow smoke on my dick for awhile ;-).

The good news is just when I think the bottom is about to drop out of the market, we get a mini-rally. The bad news is, just when I think we're out of the woods, we get a prolonged slump.
My predictions:
If we get a drop in the market BELOW the September bottom, we are in for a long, hard road for the next couple of years.
If the NASDAQ dips below 1000 for more than a day or so, we are in for significant unpleasantness and I will have to start searching for a cardboard box as my new home.

Finally, a mutual fund you can feel good about owning: VICEX, also known as the Vice Fund.
The current tops holdings are:
6.25% - Anheuser-Busch
4.60% - Philip Morris
4.33% - Harrah's Entertainment
4.01% - Constellation Brands
3.69% - L-3 Communications
3.62% - British American Tobacco
3.56% - Diageo
3.55% - General Dynamics
3.55% - MGM Mirage
3.43% - Northrop Grumman
Industry breakdown:
26.12% - Defense
24.48% - Alcohol
23.30% - Gambling
17.78% - Tobacco
The Vice Fund's website, http://www.vicefund.com, points out that vice sectors have appreciated over 52% from June 1997 to June 202, while the S&P 50 appreciated less than 12% in that same timeframe.
"Over the five-year period June 30, 1997 to June 30, 2002, an individual simply investing 25% into each of the alcohol, tobacco, gaming & casino, and aerospace/defense sectors, would have significantly outperformed the S&P 500 index."
Following are some more true gems of wisdom from this site:
The Case for Casino & Gambling Stocks
"Gambling is inevitable. No matter what is said or done by advocates or opponents in all its various forms, it is an activity that is practiced, or tacitly endorsed, by a substantial majority of Americans." Final Report, Commission on the Review of the National Policy Toward Gambling, p. 1 (Washington: 1976). The industry has grown immensely since that statement 26 years ago.
The Case for Tobacco Investing
We think it's obvious that through good economy or bad, fears of terrorism, corporate scandal, and even health fears, people keep smoking. It's not going away. Many of this country's founding fathers were tobacco farmers. People have been smoking for centuries.
While the percentage of people smoking in the U.S. may have declined, many people do not realize the huge worldwide market for tobacco products. "The tobacco industry contributes substantially to the economies of over 150 countries, with more than 100 million people world wide depending on it for employment. Tobacco is the world's most widely cultivated non-food crop."
The Case for Alcohol Investing
Have you looked at your retirement plan or brokerage account statements the last couple years, and said, "I need a drink"? Apparently a lot of people have. Take a look at the 1, 3, and 5-year charts on this page. The stock market has been lousy, but alcohol stocks seem to have performed well.
The Case for Defense Stock Investing
Osama bin Laden. That should be enough of a reason for Defense stocks. So called "Socially Responsible Investors" would claim that you shouldn't own stocks that have anything to do with defense or weapons. That means that all of the Aerospace and Defense Industries are to be avoided. Maybe in a perfect world these industries wouldn't need to exist, but until that perfect world does exist, we want to own these stocks.
Makes sense to me!!!!

VICEX - Kendricks, I like it, too bad prostitution can't be included. Reminds me of Woody Allen's movie Sleeper. Think I'll buy in just for kicks AND it does make sense.
Maybe they should add an exotic car company.
BTW, I'm writing this as I smoke a cigarette, drink a beer, think about tomorrow night with my favorite puta, watch TV about the upcoming war with IRAQ, and wonder when I can get my 260 HP Type-S Acura in for service (not an exotic, but you know).
Wasn't it Peter Lynch who said to invest in companies whose products you buy regularly?

I think that Microsoft has to be a screaming buy. I know it is selling at 30 times earnings, but for ten years it sold for 50 times earnings.
Mr. Softy has 40 billion, that is forty fuckin billion, in the bank and a monopoly on software, opps excuse me, Apple. Sun and Linex have less than 10% of the market, but everyone loves them and knows that soon MSFT will get its due.
Maybe I am wrong, as I have had a half bottle of good single malt whisky tonight, but they will probably start using that money to make themselves more of a monopoly, I mean more competitive, buy back their own stock, or pay out a significant cash dividend to shareholders. I mean how much money do they need for research and developement at this point?
