8650 next week

By Ben on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 06:10 am:  Edit

Ldvee,

Congratulations on being the winner, although Dogster seems to be contesting your victory(typical Democrat).

November 25th is nine days away. Smoke up all your cigarettes and only buy them by the packfor the next week. No, nada cigs starting 25th.

That way you may be around next year and continue winning the Dow Contest.

I pick 8700 for next week. But I reserve the right to replace my number with another number if it looks like I am going to lose.

Bob Torricelli

By Ldvee on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 07:23 am:  Edit

Well if muttster is contesting, I won't object to a recount, like a typical Republican would.

In fact, if the feral canine has the most wins I even won't resort to having some college say it doesn't matter.

I vote Green, my favorite color 8^).

"I reserve the right to replace my number with another number if it looks like I am going to lose." Isn't that a quote from Saddam?

gotta go, I'm outta coughin nails. Much cheaper in TJ, maybe the Monte Carlo for breakfast, then a beer. Are there any good bars near that restaurant?

By Ben on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 08:15 am:  Edit

Donde Monte Carlo?

Is that the place right next to Adelitas?

By Ben on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 08:18 am:  Edit

I don't object to recounts if they count all the votes.

Does the Electorial College have a football team?

By Ldvee on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 09:01 am:  Edit

Adelitas??? What's that, a bar?

I hope you have a wonderful day in TJ..

"Congratulations on being the winner, although Dogster seems to be contesting your victory(typical Democrat)."

I freely admit that I came in second last week. Doesn't that mean I win? -- Dogster Nov '02 and George W Bush Nov '00.

I've nearly finished reading Edmund Morris' book, "Theodore Rex", about TR's two terms as president. Good stuff! So there's at least ONE Republican I would've voted for in the last 100 years.

By Ben on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 12:10 pm:  Edit

It is strange to me that many Democrats either ignore or just don't know that Republicans had a great deal to do with breaking up corporate monopolies and breaking up the corporate trusts. I haven't read the book you mentioned, but I have read some about TR. He was definitely a reformist, but also was able to balance his reforms with common sense. He was also one of the first(I think)Presidents to be a conservationest, yet he enjoyed hunting.

My big complaint about Dems today and their reforms is I find many of their ideas to be self serving at the expense of the taxpayer and at the same time very anti business.

I believe in conservation, but I have no problem fishing off a drilling platform in the Gulf Of Mexico. Some of my best fishing was when I worked summers for an oil company in the Gulf of Mexico. The fish seemed to co exit just fine with the oil wells, really.

Since we are on the subject of politics I must say congratulation to the Dems for picking Nancy Pelosi as their new House leader. I couldn't have picked a better person if I had thought about it for a week. It makes me proud to be an American.

I compare her choice as like picking Jerry Falwell to lead the Republicans.

This could be a very big deal two years from now as I don't think most moderate Democrats will be able to stomach two years of her helping set up the Dems political agenda.

I'll go for 9150 for next week.

By Ben on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 12:31 pm:  Edit

Hey Dogster,

Wasn't Edmund Morris a political advisor to Bill Clinton?

Also perdicted that Hateful Hillary will be our next Pres. after Bush?

By Dogster on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 01:17 pm:  Edit

My grandfather came of age during TR's administration. He was a staunch Republican all his life. One year he gave me an Alf Landon campaign button with the classic felt sunflower around it (Landon ran against FDR in 1936, and maybe 3 people besides Ben voted for him). So... I've known about TR all my life; this isn't exactly a new revelation as far as I'm concerned. I was curious to know more about his life, so I picked up the book while shopping at my favorite small, local, politically-correct, independent book store. As I sipped on my organically-grown coffee (...non-Starbucks cappucino), I couldn't put the book down...

The book (published last year) is excellent, both for its scholarship and the fact that it reads like a novel. This Edmund Morris is not a Clintonite by a long shot. He's the author of "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" (1979), which won the Pulitzer Prize. He is also the author of "Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan" (1999), which took him 18 years to write, as Reagan's official biographer. Perhaps he can be forgiven for this foolish sideline... Now, he's back to writing the third and final book in his TR trilogy, which covers TR's life after being president. He'll probably die before he completes it, thanks to the forgettable book about what's his face.

As Ronnie's official prognosticator on this site, now that he's not exactly full speed, I'd like to enter a prediction for Ronnie:

Ronald Reagan: 8800

Your right it was Dick Morris, not Edmund Morris.

I could have allot of fun hanging around with Dick Morris.

By the way your grandfather sounds like he was a hell of guy. You have referenced him in the past and he sounds like he was a very interesting man. I should have known he was a Republican(just kidding).

And no, you are probably wrong that I wouldn't have voted for FDR. He was brilliant, charismtic, and did many things to help us through a period far worst than todays political and economic situation.

FDR was a much loved President and the guy from Missouri that took his place, whats his face, also did an outstanding job. I would have voted for him over Dewey in a heart beat.

Ronald Reagen was awoken from his nap one afternoon, and informed that Rickard Nixon passed on.

Microsoft Coke Nike Gap Barnes & Noble Starbucks ... I'm sure the Republicans are proud of the job they've done this last century limiting corporations ... I'd have to say they sure are sticking by their record.

:) snark snark snark

But what does that have to do with the stock market?

So, here's a stock-market question. How many of you guys pick (or decide when to buy / sell) on the basis of information coming out of the market itself (hi, lo, close, patterns of price, etc.), as opposed to on the basis of information in the company's balance sheet and / or periodic reports? Which info bits (from either source, market flux or content) do you like the best?

Are you technical (aka, has to do with various and sundry techniques -- what bonehead coined THAT term?) or fundamental?

By Ben on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 08:09 pm:  Edit

I am a Jerry Falwell fundamentalist, but I certainly consider some of the technical data like 50 and 200 moving average on a stock.

It is very humbling at times to be a stock picker.

By Ldvee on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 08:35 pm:  Edit

To pick stocks properly take and understanding of TA (as in technical analysis not tits and ass, we all understand that), fundamental financial analysis for the particular company, macro-economics, and micro-economics. Plus you have to plough through all those SEC filings looking for those little sentences like "Also this quarter we have come under investigation by the SEC for collusion and fraudulent accounting practices; however, we do not forsee this materially impacting our business."

In other words, way too time consuming for me, so I use a pro to manage most of my money. Now finding a good money manager is just as problematic. If you can find a humble one that spends most of his time posting to message boards about Mexican border town bar whores who are 1/3 his age, I'd go with him. He has his priorities straight, among other things, and has a great incentive to make money.

I do play around a little picking stocks and I like start-ups with a good story. SURE for example, not that I would hype a stock I own out of self interest.

I think your evaluation of investment advisors is right on.

By the way did you go to TJ today?

I will be there on Wednesday and would like to meet you sometime for a cool one.

Ben, a Jerry Falwell fundamentalist? I thought you were more of a Jim Baker type.....

By Ben on Sunday, November 17, 2002 - 08:55 am:  Edit

I can't stand any of those guys.

The worst thing that ever happened to the Republicans was to be even associated with them.

What a bunch of money grubbin phonies.

By Ldvee on Sunday, November 17, 2002 - 09:38 am:  Edit

Ben,

educate me, this from a NASDAQ stock message board. Does this really happen?

"Couldn't agree more on the MM's manipulating the stock. Looking at the volume in the last three weeks, it seems that interest in this stock has grown quite a bit. As the institutional info comes in for September's reporting, it looks like the number of institutions has grown. And that was back when avg volume was a third of what it is today. Thus, the MM's are doing their job keeping the stock in the $5 range. Dropping it at times to shake the little guy out and getting more institutions in."

By Ben on Sunday, November 17, 2002 - 10:53 am:  Edit

I don't really know if mutual funds and other institutional type money managers collaborate in conspiracies to manipulate stocks. I have heard that story line many times over the years.

Of course,it is highly illegal and if you were caught, it would definitely get you kicked out of the business, probably for life and possibly spent sometime in Lompoc.

These guys are definitely motivated by performance(receive bonus's based on outperforming a certain index) and it wouldn't be that difficult to coordinate dumping and buying with other MM's.

financials look good

Sam, you like telecoms doncha?

also thinking about averaging up on SURE

By Ben on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 08:16 am:  Edit

Tremendous growth over the past year on NWRE.

Analyst(only 3 follow the stock) like it.

One question would be why the President, Officers and Board members have sold off 45% of their stock over the past six months?

By Ldvee on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 08:48 am:  Edit

i noticed that too. The application server / thin client idea has been around for awhile, I know a little about it, and if it does become big they will be up against the big computer companies. Perhaps they are thinking to get while the getting is good. Can't blame anyone for sticking money in their pockets, but I agree it doesn't look good.

By Ben on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 02:58 pm:  Edit

Home Depot

HD down almost 13% today, but i think it has futher to go.

I bought it earlier this year at $28 and sold option and later sold the stock at $29 and change. Made over $1500 on 500 shares in September. Owned it for 36 days.

If it drops down to $20(don't be shocked) it might be interesting. probably could then write in the money calls and get your down side to $18 or so. I am not recommending this or any other stock.

By Ben on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:45 am:  Edit

Wow, what a nice day so far.

This is starting to look good.

If things keep going this direction, Ronald Reagan or Kendricks might win.

Will I gotta go clean up and make myself pretty for this afternoon

By Kendricks on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 10:53 am:  Edit

Ben, I had a great month - every one of my stocks was assigned. I like ARXX again this month, even though I had to move up and sell the 7.5 calls. That stock has been very good to me!

By Ben on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 08:48 am:  Edit

ARXX is up over 100% since August, but I think it has just about shot its load. It is selling for almost 37 times 2003 earning and was down graded by UBS Warburg from buy to hold at the end of October. With the money being spent on defense, it has a possible better future in 2004.

How did you come our on Frontier Airlines?

By Kendricks on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:54 am:  Edit

FRNT worked out beautifully, on a very small scale. Since I was a little nervous about putting money on an airline stock, I bet small on it, but those small profits can add up. I'm no longer in FRNT.

I bought 800 shares for 5.10 in October, and simultaneously sold the 5 Nov calls for .55. The shares were assigned last week.

Here is the worksheet (which does not take commissions into account)

Total Cost: 4080
Premium Received: (440)
Total Risk: 3640

Profit: $360

Percent gain, 28 days: 9.89%
Annualized gain: 75.8%

I did the same thing with UAL this month with the 2.5 calls, due to the amount that the shares were in the money, and the percentage gain.

All of the options I sold this month are in the money today, other than fucking DDS. I've been trying to split the money I have invested on five or six different stocks every month, to avoid getting wiped out on one bad trade. So far, the only bad trade I have been involved with (under this method) has been CKR.

By Kendricks on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:56 am:  Edit

As far as ARXX goes, I'm not looking for any more price appreciation, although I would like to see it stay above 7.50, for obvious reasons.

If it doesn't, I might sell the Jan 5's when the December calls expire, and get out of the trade. Or I might sell the Jan 7.5's, it's too early to tell.

By Ben on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 11:08 am:  Edit

Hey if you continue to like low price stocks check out Goodyear (GT).

You can buy at $7.58 and sell the in the money Jan. 7.50 Calls, 13.29% less commission charges on 500 shares.

Everybody hates the stock and it is close to 52 low, but they are coming out with sevearl new products, have brought in new management in the U.S. and looks like they have finally turned the company into a profit situation. Their income statement looks good and balance sheet is looking better although not very pretty.

By Ben on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 11:18 am:  Edit

Incredible news from Merk today.

They have develope a vaccine which repells the HPV virus which is related to causing cervical cancer. So far the trials have been very positive in that 100% og women using the vaccine have not contracted the virus. 250,000 women a year in the U.S. die from cervical cancer.

There is some issues has the drug will not be in the market until at least 2006 and the inoculation has to be given before men and women or sexual active.

By Kendricks on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 11:51 am:  Edit

Thanks for the GT tip. I pulled it up, and that is preceisely the kind of stock I look for. All of my trading capital is already tied up this month, but I am always looking for new stocks to add to my list of those that I review after expiration day.

I'll be sure to look at it next month, and let you know how it goes.

By Ben on Friday, November 22, 2002 - 07:46 am:  Edit

Not necesarrily recomending this stock, but it sure has dropped allot this year. Might be a good bottom fish.
