Hey Porker
I agree that game jumped at me so much so these fuckers scare me. Redskins have good D and ok O while Jags have...nothing.
I am a bit nervous with my teaser 7 pts, Packers -3 vs Lions and Eagles -2 vs Colts. Harrington has been regressing but talented, Lions have decent D, stop James Stewart please. Peyton is average these days, must be the Ryan Leaf effect.

My 3 LOCKS of the week:

Atlanta(+5) vs. PITTSBURGH - the Vick show will continue
MINNESOTA(+1) vs. NY Giants - Moss will go off finally
New England(-4.5) vs. CHICAGO - the Bears are toast

I don't know much but I can't be worse than Snapper :)

By Porker on Saturday, November 09, 2002 - 01:54 pm:  Edit

Athos, those numbers look like locks, so yeah, I'd be scared too! Indy sucks and the Packers are playing great and shouldn't just mail it in at home.

Logic says I should be fine, I have Favre at home and McNabb, low turnovers qb's. But with my luck, will be close.
With everybody down on the Chargers, this is the week they might come through or season is basically over.

Atlanta will NOT cover against Pitt...the Maddox show continues.

Here are my losers for this week.

San Diego +5.5
Green Bay/Detriot OVER 41
New England/Chicago UNDER 40.5
Jets/Miami OVER 40 -I am depending on the Jets to run up the score. I know that Miami's offence is damaged goods.

By sampson on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 01:34 pm:  Edit

have you ever had a sure winner and watch it just slip through your fingers. we all have these horror stories. ahead 24 to 20 with less than a minute(i think closer to 30 seconds) and getting 5 points. sure i'm on defense, but a touchdown doesn't hurt me. well a touchdown followed by a fumble recovery for a touchdown is downright murder. yeah you all saw the game and i'm sure of few of you won some dough on that game. no sour grapes here, but with 30 seconds left i smelled it a mile away. it's hell to have the right side and still have to pay.

By Happyboy on Sunday, November 17, 2002 - 02:49 pm:  Edit

wow, McNabb plays the rest of the game with a BROKEN ANKLE, geez, now he is out for the rest of the regular season.. Philly really needs to suck it up and make big plays to stay in the playoff hunt. Tommy Maddox suffers a serious injury, scary moment on the field, hope that everything works out for him..

PACKERS SUCK!!!!!!!

By Athos on Sunday, December 15, 2002 - 10:57 pm:  Edit

I found a way to lose again... Needed the Saints to win to cover teaser, they give up last second TD in first half. Saints take the lead to give up a last second TD at end of game. To slap me in the face, Vikes go for 2 for the win and f. Saints can't even think straight...call time out you idiots, instead Culpepper fumbled his way into the end zone.
The AFC is all fucked up but am glad Raiders lost so anyone can still get home field advantage throughout the playoffs in AFC.
I am thinking Packers all the way now because of Favre and Co on speedy offense.
My Chargers suck...help...get rid of Brees, the guy has no arm. Marty Ball will get you to perfect 0.500 8-8.

By Ben on Monday, December 16, 2002 - 09:23 am:  Edit

Marty has done an incredible job with a below to average defensive line and the same type of offensive line.

I agree he is conservative, but compared to Reilly, he is a genius.

By Athos on Friday, December 27, 2002 - 01:20 pm:  Edit

Last chance to recover some dough teaser style.
While I like the raiders (-1.5) to beat KC, I have reservation for num 2 game for a teaser.
Who would you rather pick?
Indy (no opening line) vs Jags, I am assuming under -3 to cover teaser but 1:05 kickoff or Titans -2.5 on the road or Steelers -1.5 at home but with Cowher history of not playing hard in supposedly meaningless game except if titans lose they might get first round bye.
If giants lose to eagles, then Saints becomes very palatable despite questionable D.
Indy may be already qualified by kickoff but I would assume Dungy wants to win to give Colts fan a home game before bailing out of the playoffs.
Jags backup QB can run pretty well but don't know about his arm.
Texans looks beat up but are playing at home vs Bud Adams's team.
Steelers are unreliable but Ravens have nothing to scare Steelers.

I guess I am a bit hesitant with $ involved. I only know Chargers fans are going to suffer as Marty has 4 or 5 year contract. Brees has no arm. I'd say at least make an effort to sign DE Hugh Douglas, CB Chris McAllister, and maybe WR David Boston or Peerless Price. Then draft a QB with num 1 pick. If they do not draft or acquire a QB, pretty much next decade is hosed. I was almost in tears last weekend, they may as well leave town so we can get the Colts to move in. LT will leave Chargers when contract expires unless something gets done. I get rid of Seau and let Moreno learn on the job. I sign Douglas to get rid of Raylee Johnson. I look carefully at Rodney Harrison. I get rid of free safety Rogers Beckett now, 2nd round bust. I keep Molden at dime CB but get rid of no 47 and start Jammer and FA McAllister if signed. I get a new OC. Marty is a loser, good in sept and oct but dec he has no clue. That SOB lost the game in KC, shame on him and he knows it. I feel sorry for LT, he deserves better.

Sorry bout your Chargers this season.
I weely thought they would be in the playoffs this year. They lacked chemistry and intensity this season not to mention Seau had an off year probably due to injuries. LT is Superstar status now hopefully he can keep it up for next year.
Does Brees have what it takes ? I thought Flutie should have been inserted many times this year but wasn't. Maybe they want Breeze to learn the hard way ?

He should take rookie of the year. What a impact player he is. This guy could play with just 1 hand if he wanted too !

Since I'm a Jets fan, I was intensely hoping for New England to beat Miami today because a NE win coupled with a Jets victory gives the Jets the AFC East.

So I got my NE win, but it was a travesty. The product of an atrocious defensive pass interference call against the Dolphins that ate up the field for NE and gave them a first and goal at the one. The NFL absolutely must discard the preposterous notion that "pass interference" is a "judgement call" that can't be reviewed on replay. It just makes me sick to see the outcome of critical contests come down to nonreviewable clearly erroneous calls. I can just imagine how I'd feel today if I was a Dolphin fan or a Dolphin bettor.

The "judgement call" rhetoric is just plain bullshit given that the officials already can't overturn any reviewable call unless the call on the field was clearly erroneous. I don't see why that standard can't be applied in the context of pass interference.

Write your Congressman!

Go Jets!

This Packers-Jets game is huge ... Jets need a win just to get in, Packers need a win to not only secure home field, but to even get a first round bye ... Packers have to know home-field in January in Green Bay has to be one of the biggest advantages in all of sport.

Wow that was a bad call but that happens every week so no crying, Dolphins totally chocked.
Good omen for the J.E.T.S., last year Chargers jump started Patriots season, this year they jump started Jets season.
What pisses me off is that 8:00 pm start for playoffs. How to ruin an exciting matchup between the Falcons and the Packers. Shame on the NFL. Luckily mostly warm teams for divisional weekend.
I am pretty excited teaser wise, Steelers -2 vs Browns and Jets pick vs Colts. The NFC is completely unreliable, I see Giants win in SF but Favre will prevail in the tundra.
This was the most exciting f. weekend of NFL, regular season.

Athos,

Nothing really that new. They have held the lead in the fourth quarter several times this year and then gone on with their soft defense to lose the game.

I guess I am really missing something, but it seems obvious to me that they need to take more risks on defense.

Chargers always seem close. But the key is not lose talent and add to it.
It is imperative they improve D, which can be done. Give me a very good DT, I'd prefer a young stud from college. They could also pursue couple fo free agents DE Hugh Douglas and CB McAllister although safeties seem to be an issue now.
O needs to open up. I think they can survive one more year at WR without a star player as Parker and Caldwell show speed and desire to work. They need to find a backup RB, possibly add an OL. I don't believe Brees has any future in the NFL so very touchy subject (i.e. Vick). I would not mind grabbing Jake the snake but Denver is going after him.
Marty does not have the killer instinct. Good teams try to win by 2 scores to survive wacky plays and officials calls while Marty with 1 point lead will go in a shell. We're stuck with him to the tune of 20M, still paying Gilbride and Riley so Marty is here to stay.

Wow sadly I have just read about the passing of my main man Joel Buschbaum of ProFootbalWeekly. He was only 48. I will miss his reports.

2003 schedule is already known with new format. Chargers will face afc and nfc north so last chance to see Favre play in person. Last time he was in town, scorched chargers for over 40 points. Well much easier schedule than 2002. They also will play miami and Jacksonville.

If Bill Parcells takes Cowboys job, he will face all of his old clubs, Giants, Jets and Patriots...

Remember last year when we had an informal contest in picking winners vs. the spread during the NFL playoffs? Maybe we should do it again...

As much as I hate to say this, watch out for the New York teams in the playoffs. I'll go out on a limb and say I wouldn't be surprised to see the Jets take out the Raiders in a couple of weeks. And as a Philly fan, the Giants scare me more than any other NFC team at this point in time. The Bucs haven't shown they can win a big game, the Packers looked awful against the Jets and the 49ers are a notch below.

By Athos on Monday, December 30, 2002 - 02:40 pm:  Edit

Here are my picks for this week:
Jets -6 vs Colts
Browns +8 at Steelers
Packers -6.5 vs Falcons
Giants +3.5 at 49ers

I have to agree with FarSider, Jets after blowing Colts will give a scare to the Raiders but will lose a close one.
Giants will beat 49ers fair and square but will lose at the Vet following week.
Bottom line for now: Eagles vs Raiders in SB played in San Diego. I am already sweating, please anyone beat the Raiders...

By Snapper on Monday, December 30, 2002 - 02:52 pm:  Edit

I really don't believe in this type of numeric scales anymore. With that I'm just going to go with my feeling and say the Bucs are gonna take it all.

Ok, ok, here are my losers for this week:
1)Jets-6
2)Steelers-8
3)Falcons+6.5
4)niners-3.5

I'm probably going to put a moneyline bet on the Falcons in a day or two ...Ya know, 'cause I hate money.

I think it's bullshit. Why didn't Parcells go to Tampa(where he wouldn't fail) when he had the chance?

I think he's just trying to keep his stock up.

Same thing that Deon Sanders did by saying that he was talking to Oakland(so a team like the Redskins would hurry up and take him).

By Superman on Monday, December 30, 2002 - 07:10 pm:  Edit

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. Jerry said today it's either Parcells or Dennis Green. Man, I don't want Denny ... but he has a shot cuz some organization is accusing the Cowboys of racism. Good timing! Cripes! Then again, maybe that's why sly Jerry is even mentioning Green. LOL.

Oh, and Deion just saw another shot at an easy ring. He actually had to first get released by Washington, which he did, and then clear waivers, which he didn't (5 teams claimed him to keep him from going to the Raiders).

Deion would have been ineffective anyway ... no way a guy his age can take two seasons off from everyday practice and be effective. Deion was in a major state of decline at the end of his career anyway.

I don't think Parcells will be able to work his magic in Dallas. Indeed he is an excellent coach but will he be able to deal with all of the BULLSHIT from Jerry Jones. Dallas doesn't need a new coach, THEY NEED A NEW OWNER !!!!!

By Superman on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 03:55 pm:  Edit

Jerry's owned them since 1989. 3 championships in 14 years is wayyyyyy above the league average.

-Superman-

By Snapper on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 03:56 pm:  Edit

...and if you viewed him the same way owners view their coaches, you would say "what have you done for me lately?"

By Superman on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 04:03 pm:  Edit

This is true ... which is why hiring Parcells is a very good sign. Everyone with any football sense at all knows Jerry has been coach of the Cowboys ever since he fired Jimmy Johnson. Switzer, Gailey, and Campo were puppets. Parcells is a real coach, and represents a change in philosophy I thought I'd never see. This move is Jerry basically firing himself.

Parcells has apparently signed a contract and will be announced Thursday. Again, I'll believe it when I see it ... he walked on Tampa Bay last year at the last minute, and they had a signed contract too.

I'm not overly thrilled with the choice of Parcells. I think he's old, and I question how long he'll be there. I'm more thrilled that Jerry has finally hired a real NFL head coach.

-Superman-

By Snapper on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 04:09 pm:  Edit

I'm not too sure that he has signed. All I heard is that they have an "agreement".

By Beavis on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 04:19 pm:  Edit

If he would have left Jimmy Johnson alone I think he would have had four superbowls back to back. Jimmy was there for 5 years. His first year they were 1 and 15. His last 2 years they were the super bowl champions. Jimmy Johnson built that team and when Switzer won the super bowl with them it was only because anybody can drive a Cadillac. In my opinion Jimmy Johnson was a better coach than Parcells he just wanted control of what was happeneing with the team. With the track record he had in 5 years Jerry Jones should have shut the fuck up and let him do what he wanted.

Parcells will not last in Dallas unless Mr. Jones steps aside and leaves him alone which I don't think he is capable of. At least one good thing happened in the NFL this year. With the expansion of the Houston Texans we finally have a professional football team in Texas.

I would like to see Tampa Bay go all the way this year but I think you boys out in California have the best shot with the Raiders.

By Dogster on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 06:41 pm:  Edit

"Jimmy Johnson built that team and when Switzer won the super bowl with them it was only because anybody can drive a Cadillac."

Lets not forget the doomed Minnesota Vikings and their asshole general manager at the time. They helped build the Cowboys, too.

There's lots of talk about the possibility of an all NY Superbowl. I'd rather see an all SF Bay Area Superbowl, which is slightly more likely, but I'm not holding my breath. The NFL would probably loathe to see either No Cal team win, based on the various headaches they've caused the league in recent years.

Also -- Al Davis has owned/run the Raiders for about 2 centuries and has way more than 3 Super Bowl rings.

P.S. I still HATE football

By Beavis on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 10:36 pm:  Edit

I would rather see Cincinatti and Cleveland in the super bowl before an all New York super bowl.

By Superman on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 12:06 am:  Edit

In the end, the supposedly "great" Herschel Walker trade did not do a whole lot to build the Cowboys ... the great swindle is mostly myth.

I once researched and detailed the trade in a Cowboys forum, tracking every player and draft pick acquired (which was no small task since they turned around and traded many of those picks away). In the end, Dallas basically ended up with Darren Woodson (hall of famer, but he was not even a starter on their first SB team of the 90's) and Larry Allen (hall of famer, but he missed the first 2 Super Bowls).

All the actual players Dallas got from Minnesota were average veterans ... some of whom never played a down for the Cowboys (Darrin Nelson), and none of them were starters on the '92 Super Bowl team.

Along the way, lots of players passed through as a result of the trade, but only Woodson and Allen ever did anything of note. Minnesota fans can still feel bitter though ... Herschel definitely went from great running back to average running back overnight.

-Superman-

By Superman on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 02:21 am:  Edit

I just crawled into bed and realized I brainfarted on that one ... Dallas indirectly got Woodson and Allen as a result of the Steve Walsh trade. It's late.

For all the draft picks Dallas got, the Herschel trade basically netted them Emmitt Smith, Erik Williams and Alvin Harper, and few second stringers and special teamers ... still a steal any way you look at it, but not as dramatic as legend has it. Two players acquired in the deal never played a down for Dallas. One of the draft picks was immediately traded to San Fran for Terrence Flagler, who never got on the field for the Cowboys either.

The trade most definitely did more to decimate the Vikings than it did in building the Cowboys, but most think it's the other way around.

Many people also forget Herschel started out with a bang in Minnesota ... 51 yards on his first touch and 47 on his second, and then 148 yards on 18 carries in his second game. It was all downhill from there and Mike Lynn has not had a job in the NFL since ...
