Yeah, Herschel was great for us Viking fans!

This is why Minnesota will never win a superbowl. this team is only interested in selling merchandise of the big star players like Moss, Carter, and Walker. They could really use that 75 million they are wasting on Moss and build a more balanced team.

...Maybe Parcells will be interested in taking Moss off Minnesota's hands and repay the favor that the Vikes did for that Cowboys.
God knows that Parcells has a better chance of controlling this "dope smoking/I play when I want to/meter-maid running over" piece of shit.

By Superman on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 12:00 pm:  Edit

The last player in the world I would want on the Cowboys is Randy Moss ... even though I cursed them when they passed him up in the draft and took Greg Ellis ... that remains one of the very few intelligent things JJ did in the draft since Johnson left.

I like Purcell.

Guys like him are sucessful where ever they go because they are very intelligent, along with incredibly hugh egos. Always a formula for sucess. I know old school, but this guy has always been the real deal.

If he did get Randy Moss(which I hope and think he probably will not) Randy Moss would become a real team player. Just ask LT.

Oh, I forgot. Thank you Minnesota for making Dallas the dominant team of the 90's. By the way Emmitt Smith is available for your next three first round draft choices.

I'm claiming to be a Viking's fan now, so that in 15 or 20 years when they're good again you can't say I'm jumping on the bandwagon.

By T_Bone on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 07:50 pm:  Edit

I think it's funny when some announcer or anyone says they wouldn't want Randy Moss on his team - that's just plain ignorant. He is by far the most underutilized player in football and he's been All Pro four of five years.

He's done and said some stupid things and he is a headcase but he's made significant strides in this department. This season, his worst transgression was driving a rent-a-cop on his bumper for a block. He's becoming more and more of a team leader and is well liked by his teammates and coaches.

By Athos on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 08:31 pm:  Edit

Randy Moss made the pro bowl again despite playing on lousy team so he must be good. Ah but yes Junior Seau made it too and he was the third best LB on his team.
NFC East will be quite competitive next year. Cowboys are 11M under the cap, enough leeway for Parcells to shape his team personel.

By Superman on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 08:50 pm:  Edit

Moss' talent is not in question. The problem is his attitude. The guy is a team cancer. Anyone who thinks they've seen the last Moss incident is somewhere in dreamland.

BandWagon?

I have been a cowboys fan for over thirty years.

I just disagreed with what you said at the beginning of the season That they were going to be good this year. Go back and read my post.

I also sorta rubbed it in, in a later post regarding your remarks.

The cowboys STILL have line problems on both sides and in fact their offensive line is worst now than at the beginning of the season.

Oh, and they still don't have a quarterback, but maybe Hutchinson will be the man if he lives through another season.

Oh, and what are they going to do with Emmitt?

Jerry Jones has made an incredible amount of mistakes and in addition has had some bad luck. Hell just look at his new face.

Packers +6.5 Under
Steelers +7.5 Under

There was a cool stat in the paper the other day: On Oct 12th Titans, Falcons, Steelers, and Jets were 4-14 and the Dolphins, Saints, Broncos, and Chargers were 16-4

Damnit Ben, you must have been educated with Dogster in Mexico or something ... you both have trouble with reading comprehension.

Predictions are saying "I predict" or making a statement such as "Dallas will make the playoffs this year." Saying "I will be disappointed if they don't make the playoffs" is not a prediction. It just means I'm disappointed.

I was just joshing you anyway ... I know you've been a fan since the teams friggin inception in 1960.

On the subject of predictions, I like Dogster's ... San Fran, San Diego or Denver to win it all. Well, he's still got a shot ... I'm surprised he did not predict "a team from the AFC or NFC will win it."

I am in, fresh off of my Miami selection in the Fiesta Bowl last night...

1. Indianapolis +6 at NYJ...NYJ the talk of the league at this point; a bad sign in an upside-down season...I have a hunch that Dungy figures-out a way to keep this one close...

2. Cleveland +8 at Pittsburgh...Take a look for yourself, do not take my word for it: the Browns play everyone close...

3. San Francisco -3.5 vs. NYG...SF due for a breakout game...That "hot" tag being applied to the Giants is enough in and of itself to scare me away from them, but, in addition, the Niners are simply the better team...

4. Green Bay -6.5 vs. Atlanta...Falcons have no chance up North with an ailing Michael Vick...Chris Chandler may have been able to keep this one close...

LOL! Yup, Superman, I made that prediction 2 months ago, picking 3 long-shot teams that were doing well but not great. The a priori odds of even one of those 3 teams making it to the superbowl were pretty slim, but that's a probability and statistics issue, not remotely your specialty, despite claims. In the reading comprehension arena, you may want to note that I signed that post as "Dogsterwhoisnotbettingoneredcentonthisprediction." Anyway, it is fun to make these predictions. If I’m wrong, it’ll mark the first time on Club Hombre that I’ve made an incorrect prediction, well in advance, about the ultimate champion (Lakers, Angels). Go Niners!

Your own response was:
“I'll take Green Bay. When in doubt, bet on Favre.”

That prediction was undoubtedly based on your extensive knowledge and understanding of the game, which you keep reminding us about (see most recent claim on NBA thread), and the fact that all the trendoids were on the Packers’ bandwagon at that point. Kind’ve a bummer what happened today.

One of these days you may actually make a correct guess ...err... prediction about sports. The statistical conclusion, based on increasing amount of empirical data, is that you don’t know shit. But go ahead, claim victory again if it makes ya feel less insecure.

Nyah, nyah, nyah.

I dunno, guys. Can't believe this little spat has been going on since April or so. This remains too easy, albeit tedious at times.

This is gonna sting buddy. Take it like a man and don't even try to spin it ...

picking 3 long-shot teams that were doing well but not great

LOL ... yeah, you picked three longshots there! After the Nov. 3 games, San Francisco was 6-2 and in first place; San Diego was 7-2 and in first place; Denver was 6-2 and a half game behind San Diego. Shut up already.

Additionally, all three were favorites to make the playoffs, and San Fran was a pre-season Super Bowl favorite from the NFC.

Stick to sports/topics you actually know something about before I make you look stupid again. Your desperation is showing ...

Good call on the upset, Snapper! LOL. The Pack were out of sync the last 5 weeks or so ... thus not a huge surprise, but doing it in Green Bay is impressive.

Michael Vick is the most exciting player to come along in a long time. Damn he's fun to watch. I'd like to see them make Super Bowl (note to Bitchster and Ben: this is not a prediction).

It will be interesting to see how history judges the 2000 draft ... San Diego got Brees and Tomlinson ... Atlanta got Vick. Vick is one up on them as far as making the playoffs go ...

-Superman-

By Ben on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 08:50 am:  Edit

I think both SD and Atlanta came out very well with their picks.

Even if Brees never pans out Tomlinson is the real deal. Plus Brees seems very intelligent which can help a lot when his physical skiils are maybe just average compared to some of the other NFL QB's

I saw a NFL T V film with Bill Walsh commenting on Joe Montana's touch when throwing a pass and Montana's laughing and saying I have touch because I can't throw the ball hard. Maybe Brees will be that type of QB.

Vick is really exciting to watch and seems to have it all. Intelligents and incredible athletic ability.

Incidently Superman,

I think you are bright, but sometime a very immature man. As you get older you will find that we all can be wrong and being wrong does not make you a bad or less than adequate person.

Semantics aside, I think your statements about Dallas preseason indicated you thought Dalls was going to have a good team this year. You were obviously wrong, but BFD. If that is your worst mistake this year, you are doing pretty damn good.

Played golf yesterday so I missed my gym workout. The weather was the best. I played in Vista with some friends and the high was around 80. Now golf is a sport I enjoy. Where else can you set on your fat ass, drink beer and talk to your buddies about politics, sex and the stock market. man what a sport.

Going to the gym this morning and work off the beer.

Ben, you're entitled to your opinion, but you don't know me as a man. You know me as 8 letters. Remember that. I have no problem saying I was wrong and have admitted such many times (unlike some others). What I don't like is people telling me what I said when I never said it. It's a weak and ultimately ineffective way to try and make a point.

You're right, I did think Dallas was going to have a decent team before the season started. Unfortunately, their offensive line got decimated in preseason. The five starters never played a single game together. They not only pulled O-Lineman off their practice squad to play, but they were starting OL from other teams practice squads at the end of the year. They followed that up by losing Ismail for the season and having to start a rookie at WR.

I think their defense is playoff caliber, but they have serious problems on the line (both tackles are free agents), big questions at wide receiver, running back and QB. The new coach has a history of quickly re-tooling, so we'll see what he can do. I'm hoping for about 8-8 or 9-7 next season (not a prediction).

Tomlinson is a stud but would you rather have Tomlinson and Brees or Vick and Travis Henry?

Ok, Dallas got Parcells which is news but I'd like to put a moratorium on Dallas talk.

Typical Cowboy caller on sports talk radio: Preseason - talk about how great Dallas is going to be
Week 6 - Who do you think Dallas is looking for in next years draft

No more Dallas Cowboy talk now until they are at least .500 in November.

T-Bone ... they are the NFL glamour team. They are they most popular and most hated team in the league. You just have to put up with it. Same reason you have to put up with Laker and Yankee news all year.

Snapper ... that schedule looks bad, but now is not the time to evaluate it. The NFL changes from week to week, so how can we know who will be good 9 months from now? This time last year I saw Houston and the Rams on the schedule and figured they would split those games ... they did but it was the opposite of what I expected. The league is screwy .... the Patriots won the Super Bowl last year for cripes sake ... Denver, San Diego and New Orleans were dominating the NFL as recently as Nov. 3 and none of them even made the playoffs.

I never cared for Dave Campo, who by the way, was very popular and close to many of his players according to the newspapers. Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson were not buddies with the players and both used a tough demenor as a motivator.

I hope Purcell makes a difference in a hurry. He not only is a good evaluator of players and coaches, but seems to get the most out of a team. Very intelligent man who many players fear and respect.

I bet they are a much better team next year than they were last year. They do have a lot of personnel needs.

Is it just me, or are complete fucking, should-be-taken-out-and-shot assholes like Terrell Owens almost starting to ruin NFL football?

By Farsider on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 06:13 pm:  Edit

Yeah, I agree about Owens, but the Giants have no one to blame but themselves for that loss. What a game! But I don't think I've seen a game with more bonehead plays at crunch time. Certainly, Mr. Owens' antics would have to be right up there among them.

But if you're a Giants fan, who do you pin the blame on?

1) The guy who made two bad snaps on field goals,
2) The holder, for not immediately spiking the ball on that final botched field goal,
3) The two bozos who lost their cool and retaliated against Owens' BS,
4) Shockey, for dropping that gimme TD pass that would have made it 42-14 (not to mention throwing a cup of ice water at some kid in the stands)
5) The coaching staff, for going conservative when they had the big lead.
6) The defense, for going soft when it counted.

Actually, BOTH of today's games were highly entertaining.

They were really entertaining, but I am sick of football.

By Superman on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 06:20 pm:  Edit

The blame goes down to the coaching staff. The holder should have been told beforehand that all he needed to do was spike the ball. That's just bad coaching.

The Giants should have called the Cowboys about Trey Junkin ... they signed him last year when they were struggling with bad snaps. He came in for two games, botched three snaps and cost them a win. He was cut the next day. I swear when they did the closeup on him before the snap, he was shaking.

Two great games today though.

By Athos on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 06:21 pm:  Edit

It gets worse next week Terrel Owens vs Warren Sapp, this makes me sick.
Amazing games but both losers choked imho. Browns should have kept throwing the ball intermediate to deep ball.
Giants failed on all 6 points addressed by FarSider. But coach is at fault I believe for not reminding holder to spike the ball in case of foul up.

Early lines:
Titans -4 vs Steelers
Eagles -7.5 vs Falcons
Bucs -4.5 vs 49ers
Raiders -5.5 vs Jets.

By Solid808 on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 07:43 am:  Edit

The 49ers are going to have a tough time in Tampa. The Niners DB's have to step up their game (unlikely) and Garcia has to attempt more passes to Owens (even if he is covered). Owens has a better ability to get yards after the catch than the other Niner receivers.

By Explorer8939 on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 07:20 pm:  Edit

Note to Giants fans: prepare for what has got to be the worst apology in history:

The NFL now says that there should have been a replay of the field goal attempt. It turns out that the Giant downfield was an eligible receiver AND that pass interference SHOULD have been called.

BTW, spiking the ball wouldn't have been legit in that situation.

By Superman on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 08:18 pm:  Edit

Almost ... there was an ineligible receiver downfield, which was the penalty called. The Giants also had a guard-eligible, who was interfered with, and the refs said they should have called pass interference. It would have been offsetting penalties, giving the Giants another chance.

Allen could not have done a traditional QB spike, but he could have simply thrown the ball away towards the feet of an eligible receiver ... an error only magnified by the fact that he said on ESPN today that he expected another bad snap, and had told the kicker to be ready. The Giants also had a timeout left.

-Superman-

By Explorer8939 on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 08:28 pm:  Edit

The NFL stated that the player downfield that the refs called the penalty on was in fact an eligible receiver.

As for whether Allen should have simply thrown the ball away, well he did have a downfield receiver almost in the end zone.

From ESPN.com:

Monday, January 6

Statement on last play of Giants-Niners game

The NFL's official statement Monday regarding the final play of the 49ers' 39-38 playoff victory over the Giants on Sunday:

A videotape review by NFL Director of Officiating Mike Pereira of the final play -- the Giants' 41-yard field goal attempt with six seconds remaining -- determined the following:

Tam Hopkins, No. 65, of the Giants lined up as the left guard and was illegally downfield on the pass attempt. The three flags thrown on this play were for this penalty.

Guard Rich Seubert, No. 69, was an eligible receiver on Giants field-goal attempts. This was reported to the officiating crew prior to the game as is routinely done before every game.

49ers defensive end Chike Okeafor interfered with Seubert downfield when he was attempting to catch Giants holder Matt Allen's pass. This defensive pass-interference penalty against the 49ers was not called.

If defensive pass interference had been called, there would have been offsetting penalties (ineligible receiver against the Giants and pass interference against the 49ers) with the down replayed at the original line of scrimmage, the San Francisco 23-yard line. Although time had expired, a game cannot end with offsetting penalties. Thus, the game would have been extended by one untimed down.

Niners rock, Niners roll. (as predicted). GREAT comeback, end of story. Onward to San Diego!!!

In fact, most modern football players are self-absorbed dicks. Some just get more press than others. And they are constantly being rewarded and coddled for being remarkably dysfunctional. Anybody here familiar with Harry Edwards? Part of the entertainment value of the NFL is watching these overfed bozos beat the shit out of each other and themselves. They get paid quite well but the cost is brain damage and other ailments. The other cost is that they and the less aware masses actually think the game matters for something. In the end it is mindless entertainment and fairly disconnected from anything remotely important in life (except perhaps channeling the anger and aggression of the many into beer and car purchases). But hey, it IS fun and remarkably easy to understand.
