American Express has a Travel Medical Protection plan - I have it but thankfully have never had to use it so I can't say how good it is but it sounds very good to me. The costs vary by how much protection you have and how many people are on the policy but generally it is about $80 per year for $50,000 coverage (more and less coverage is also available) for a single person. One has to be more than 150 miles from home and there less than 30 days. It is secondary coverage but it is my understanding that if your primary policy don't have overseas coverage then this policy AMEX pays.
